Symmetry

Symmetry is an on-chain asset management protocol on Solana that lets anyone create, manage, and invest in tokenized baskets of digital assets. Launched in 2021, the protocol has shipped three major iterations, with V3 currently live in beta. It is built around multi-token vaults — programmable containers that hold up to 100 SPL or Token22 tokens simultaneously, each assigned a configurable target weight.

How It Works

When a user deposits assets into a Symmetry vault, they receive vault tokens in return. Those tokens represent a proportional share of the underlying basket and can be held, traded, or integrated into other protocols. Burning vault tokens redeems the proportional share of the underlying assets.

Baskets stay in balance through a Dutch auction rebalancing system. When vault weights drift from their targets, an off-chain keeper bot initiates an auction using oracle price snapshots and confidence bands to determine acceptable price ranges. The auction price descends over time until a counterparty fills the order, rebalancing the vault without relying on a single AMM or routing path. Keepers earn bounties for executing rebalances, making execution permissionless.

Oracle pricing aggregates data from multiple sources — Pyth, Raydium CLMM, Raydium CPMM, and liquid staking token protocols — to provide robust pricing at mint and redemption. This multi-source approach reduces the impact of single-oracle failures on vault valuations.

Use Cases

The protocol targets several distinct user categories. Individual traders can gain one-click exposure to a basket of tokens — a sector index, a set of DeFi blue chips, or a custom strategy — without managing each asset separately. DAOs and multisigs can use Symmetry vaults for treasury diversification, with automated rebalancing maintaining target allocations over time. Developers can embed vault creation and investment flows directly into applications using the TypeScript SDK (@symmetry-hq/sdk). Institutions exploring on-chain asset management have access to an infrastructure layer that handles pricing, rebalancing, and custody without requiring custom contract development.

SMF Token

SMF is Symmetry's native governance and utility token, with a maximum supply of 100 million. It is used to govern the protocol, pay deployment and purchase fees, and incentivize liquidity provision. Governance rights include the ability to vote on or propose changes to index token compositions. The token is designed to strengthen the protocol ecosystem over time, with additional utility to be introduced as the protocol matures.

Status

Symmetry V3 is live on Solana mainnet in beta. The protocol's on-chain program is deployed and active, with TVL tracked by DeFi aggregators. Blog activity peaked in late 2023 with the launch of Private Funds and the V1.5 upgrade; V3 represents the current architecture. Management and performance fees are currently disabled in the active deployment.
