About

Cash App

Cash App is a consumer financial platform owned by Block, Inc. that combines peer-to-peer transfers, banking, stock investing, Bitcoin trading, and stablecoin payments in a single mobile application. Launched in 2013 by Square (now Block) under the name Square Cash, it has grown to 59 million active accounts in the United States and United Kingdom and is one of the more direct on-ramps to Bitcoin and Solana-based digital dollars for mainstream consumers.

Bitcoin Integration

Bitcoin has been central to Cash App's product identity for years. The app allows users to buy and sell Bitcoin, receive bitcoin via direct deposit, and withdraw to an external wallet. Cash App has rolled out zero or low fees on most Bitcoin purchases, and eligible users get fee-free Bitcoin spending via the Lightning Network.

A more recent addition is Bitcoin merchant payments. Users can pay at any Square-enabled merchant that accepts Bitcoin by funding the transaction from their U.S. dollar balance, with the app converting automatically at point of sale. Square, Block's merchant business, has enabled Bitcoin acceptance across approximately 4 million merchants globally. A Bitcoin map within the app surfaces nearby participating merchants.

Block's founder Jack Dorsey is one of the most prominent corporate Bitcoin advocates, and that position has shaped Cash App's crypto roadmap consistently.

USDC Stablecoin Payments on Solana

In November 2025, Cash App announced it would add [[TOKEN:EPjFWdd5AufqSSqeM2qN1xzybapC8G4wEGGkZwyTDt1v]] (USDC) stablecoin transfers to the platform, with Solana as the initial settlement network. The feature began rolling out in early 2026.

The implementation assigns each Cash App account a Solana blockchain address. Users can send and receive USDC, with the app handling conversion between stablecoins and U.S. dollars automatically. Circle, the issuer of USDC, participated in the initial demonstration of the capability.

Miles Suter, Bitcoin product lead at Block, put the rationale plainly:

:::callout{type="quote" label="What they said" source="Miles Suter, Block — November 2025"} If I were founding Cash App today, I would build it on stablecoin rails natively. :::

Suter also framed Block's broader network stance as "chain and coin agnostic right now, and to go where customers lead," signaling that Solana is the starting point rather than a permanent exclusive.

Why Solana

The choice of Solana over Bitcoin's Lightning Network for the stablecoin layer reflects a straightforward infrastructure calculation. Solana processes transactions at sub-second finality with average fees well under a cent, making it viable for the kind of small, frequent dollar transfers that Cash App's user base performs. USDC is a native asset on Solana, issued and managed by Circle.

The decision drew attention partly because of Dorsey's long-standing Bitcoin maximalism, but Suter's framing of Solana as "upgraded fintech rails" and not a crypto investment thesis addressed that directly. Block has described a longer-term vision, sometimes called Cash App v2, where stablecoin flows eventually settle into Bitcoin on the back end, treating Solana as the transaction infrastructure and Bitcoin as the final settlement layer.

Consumer Banking Features

Alongside its crypto products, Cash App operates as a full consumer financial account. Core features as of 2026 include:

  • Fee-free peer-to-peer transfers with personalization options
  • A Visa debit card (Cash Card) with weekly merchant cash-back offers
  • Direct deposit with up to two days early access
  • Savings with up to 3.25% annual interest, available through the Cash App Green premium tier
  • Overdraft coverage up to $200 at no fee
  • Short-term credit up to $500 with no hard credit check
  • Commission-free stock trading through Cash App Investing LLC, a FINRA/SIPC-registered broker
  • Access to approximately 40,000 fee-free ATMs
  • Afterpay integration for installment payments at participating merchants

Cash App reports preventing more than $2 billion in scams since 2020. Funds held in the Cash App balance are FDIC-insured subject to pass-through arrangements; Bitcoin and investment holdings carry no such coverage.

Background

Block, Inc. operates Cash App as one of two main business segments alongside its Square merchant payments platform. Block went public in 2015 as Square, Inc. and rebranded in 2021; its NYSE ticker changed from SQ to XYZ in 2024. Bitcoin-related revenue from Cash App has historically been disclosed separately in Block's investor reporting, given its materiality to the company's overall gross profit.

Cash App's move into Solana-based stablecoin payments marks a meaningful expansion beyond its original peer-to-peer money transfer purpose, giving a mainstream user base of tens of millions direct access to on-chain dollar transfers without requiring them to manage crypto wallets independently.
