Bitvavo
Bitvavo
Bitvavo is a Dutch cryptocurrency exchange headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Founded in 2018 by programmers Tim Baardse and Jelle de Boer alongside business administrator and tax attorney Mark Nuvelstijn, the platform has grown into one of Europe's largest and most heavily regulated crypto trading venues. By 2024, Bitvavo claimed the title of the largest euro-denominated spot exchange in the world, with more than 2.3 million registered users, a dominant roughly 40% share of the Dutch cryptocurrency market, and over €100 billion in total trading volume during 2024 alone.
Regulatory Standing
Bitvavo's regulatory journey in Europe is a defining feature of its identity. In 2020 the company obtained registration with De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), the Dutch Central Bank, as a digital asset service provider — a requirement under EU anti-money-laundering directives and a signal to Dutch consumers that the platform met baseline compliance standards. The exchange also holds registrations with the Bank of Spain, the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA), and France's Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF).
The most significant regulatory milestone came in June 2025 when Bitvavo obtained full authorisation under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation from the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM). The MiCA licence functions as a passport across all 30 European Economic Area member states, meaning Bitvavo can now serve retail and institutional European clients under a single, harmonised regulatory framework — a competitive advantage that smaller or offshore exchanges lack as the July 2026 compliance deadline approaches for unlicensed platforms.
Solana Trading and Staking
Bitvavo supports Solana (SOL) across two core product lines. SOL trades against euro on the spot market, benefiting from the platform's deep euro liquidity and tight spreads. Staking is available as a managed service: eligible SOL balances begin earning rewards automatically without requiring a lock-up period, and rewards are distributed weekly to user wallets.
The current headline rate for SOL staking is approximately 3.6% APY. Bitvavo applies a 15% commission on gross staking rewards, so users' net yield reflects that deduction. Short selling of SOL was added to the platform in December 2025, allowing users to open short positions up to €50,000 per asset — subject to a knowledge test required by Dutch financial regulation.
Fee Structure
Bitvavo's fee schedule is tiered by 30-day trading volume. Users trading below €1,000 per month pay a taker fee of 0.25% and a maker fee of 0.15% — already among the lowest headline rates of any major European exchange (compared with Coinbase at 0.60% or Bitpanda at 1.49%). Volume-based tiers reduce fees progressively, with the most active traders paying as little as 0.03%. New accounts receive a commission-free allowance on the first €10,000 in trades, lowering the barrier for retail entrants.
SEPA bank transfers are free in both directions. iDEAL, Wero, and Bancontact deposits carry no fee. Card deposits incur a 1% surcharge and PayPal deposits a 2% surcharge. There are no custody or withdrawal fees for on-chain transfers at standard network rates.
Platform Features and Security
The exchange lists over 440 cryptocurrencies, with staking available on more than 70 proof-of-stake assets at rates reaching up to 28% APY for some assets. The platform includes a full TradingView chart integration for technical analysis and an API for automated trading strategies.
Security architecture emphasises offline custody: approximately 98% of user funds are held in cold wallets stored in category-4+ bank vaults monitored around the clock. Cold wallet holdings are insured up to $255 million through institutional custodians and Lloyd's of London-backed coverage. Client funds are held in a separate legal entity, Stichting Bitvavo Payments, ring-fencing them from the company's operational balance sheet. Uniquely among European exchanges, Bitvavo offers account-level insurance of up to €100,000 against losses from unauthorised access — a protection that mirrors deposit guarantee schemes in traditional banking.
Two-factor authentication is mandatory for all accounts. Additional controls include anti-phishing codes, device and IP whitelisting, and withdrawal address whitelisting.
Team and Leadership
Bitvavo was built by its three co-founders through the early years of European crypto expansion. Mark Nuvelstijn served as CEO from the company's inception and oversaw its growth to market leadership. In July 2025, Nuvelstijn resigned following media reports in the Netherlands alleging connections to money-laundering and insider-trading activity; he maintains his innocence. Johan van Olffen, a member of the company's leadership team, was appointed interim CEO following Nuvelstijn's departure. The company has stated it is cooperating with ongoing inquiries.
Ecosystem Position and Recognition
Beyond its core exchange business, Bitvavo has built visibility through mainstream sports sponsorships: it became a primary sponsor of the KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Association) in March 2022 and a partner of the German Football Association (DFB) from January 2026. These partnerships reflect an ambition to normalise crypto investing among mainstream European retail audiences.
The company has received multiple industry awards, including three consecutive Cashcow Awards for Best Broker (2021–2023) and recognition in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 programme in both 2022 and 2023. It was also named the most popular financial website in the Netherlands in 2021 and again in 2024.
Within the Solana ecosystem specifically, Bitvavo serves as one of the primary euro on-ramps for European retail investors. Its combination of deep euro liquidity, regulated custody, and native staking infrastructure makes it a substantive entry point for European capital flowing into Solana.
