Maple Finance
Maple Finance is an onchain credit marketplace founded in 2019 by Sidney Powell, Joe Flanagan, Matt Collum, and Ryan O'Shea. The platform bridges traditional capital markets underwriting with DeFi infrastructure, offering fixed-rate loans to institutional borrowers funded by onchain liquidity. As of Q2 2026, Maple manages $4.6 billion in AUM — 81% growth year-over-year — with $1.9 billion in loans outstanding representing an all-time high.
Protocol History and Evolution
Maple launched publicly in May 2021 with an undercollateralized lending model that relied on professional pool delegates to assess and vouch for borrowers. This model experienced severe stress in late 2022 when Orthogonal Trading defaulted on $36 million in loans, exposing the limitations of reputational credit underwriting in a market downturn.
The protocol responded with a fundamental redesign. Maple V2, released in late 2022, replaced undercollateralized lending with mandatory overcollateralization and moved underwriting in-house under the Maple Direct unit. Fixed rates replaced variable supply-demand pricing, and the protocol introduced flash-loan liquidations and continuous margin monitoring with 24-hour borrower response windows. Maple reports zero credit losses since 2023.
A third phase began in 2024 with the launch of syrupUSDC, a permissionless stablecoin wrapper that allows retail DeFi participants to access yield from Maple's institutional lending book without the KYC requirements imposed on direct pool participants.
Lending Products
Maple operates two primary pool types differentiated by collateral quality:
Blue Chip Secured Lending accepts only Bitcoin and Ethereum as collateral and targets approximately 7.5% annual yield. Overcollateralization ratios are maintained above 150%, with collateral values monitored continuously.
High Yield Secured Lending accepts a broader set of assets including XRP, SOL, and other large-cap tokens, with yields above 11% and correspondingly higher collateral requirements to compensate for asset volatility.
Loan durations run 30 to 180 days at fixed rates determined by Maple's credit team based on borrower-specific risk assessment rather than algorithmic supply-demand curves. Both lenders and borrowers must complete KYC verification. Borrowers are primarily institutional trading firms, market makers, and crypto-native funds.
syrupUSD and Retail Access
The syrupUSD product family (syrupUSDC and syrupUSDG) enables permissionless participation in Maple's lending returns. syrupUSDG is a regulated-dollar yield product launched on both Ethereum and Robinhood Chain. As of mid-2026, the syrupUSD supply reached approximately $2.8 billion. The product outyielded major stablecoin yield peers by 110 basis points in Q2 2026.
Maple has integrated syrupUSD with Robinhood Earn and established an onchain warehouse lending facility with Kraken. The protocol also participates in yield strategies through Pendle, Ether.fi's Neutral USD vault, and Morpho. Sky Protocol allocated $50 million to Maple with capacity to scale to $100 million.
Tokens: SYRUP
Maple's original governance token MPL was migrated to SYRUP in November 2024 at a fixed conversion rate of 1 MPL to 100 SYRUP. The migration carried no holder dilution and projected a total SYRUP supply of approximately 1.228 billion by September 2026.
SYRUP serves three functions: governance participation through stSYRUP staking, staking rewards at approximately 5% annualized inflation, and revenue-sharing via a buyback mechanism. SYRUP holders can exit staking at any time with no lock-up period.
In July 2026, governance proposal MIP-021 passed with 99.97% of votes in favor, establishing a rules-based SYRUP buyback tied directly to monthly net protocol revenue. The buyback allocation scales at 10% of revenue below $1.5 million per month, 20% between $1.5 million and $2 million, and 30% above $2 million. The first buyback under MIP-021 completed in August 2026: 852,840 SYRUP acquired for 136,768 USDT at an average price of $0.1604. All buyback transactions are logged on Maple's public Transparency Dashboard.
Protocol Metrics
Total loans originated since 2019 exceed $24.1 billion. Q2 2026 year-to-date originations reached $5.4 billion. The protocol recorded $4.4 million in Q2 2026 revenue, up 47% year-over-year, with annualized recurring revenue of $17.5 million. Deposits stood at $2.2 billion with $1.03 billion in net inflows during the quarter. This growth occurred against a backdrop of broader DeFi lending market contraction of approximately 31% over the same period.
The 300-borrower Borrower Hub onboarded its initial cohort in early 2026. Maple reports a 99% repayment rate across its lending history, including the full write-off of V1 defaults.
Security
Maple's smart contracts have undergone 19 audits across releases from December 2022 through January 2026. Audit firms include Three Sigma (6 audits), 0xMacro (4 audits), Sherlock (2 audits), Spearbit (2 audits), Trail of Bits (1 audit), Sigma Prime (1 audit), and Dedaub (1 audit). All identified issues were addressed prior to release. The protocol maintains an active bug bounty program administered through Immunefi. Additional security measures include Chainlink oracle price feeds, oracle wrappers, withdrawal cooldowns, and anti-flash-loan bootstrapping mechanisms.
Chains and Infrastructure
Maple operates primarily on Ethereum and has expanded to Solana for certain products. The syrupUSDG product launched on Robinhood Chain in 2026, marking the protocol's third chain integration.
