Five Brazilian Soccer Club Fan Tokens Go Live on Solana via Chiliz and LayerZero
Chiliz has brought five major Brazilian football fan tokens to Solana via LayerZero's OFT standard, maintaining a single unified supply across three chains.
Chiliz, the sports blockchain company behind the Socios.com fan engagement platform, brought five major Brazilian football club fan tokens to Solana on August 10. The five tokens ($MENGO for Flamengo, $VERDAO for Palmeiras, $FLU for Fluminense, $VASCO for Vasco da Gama, and $SPFC for São Paulo FC) are now available on Solana alongside their existing presence on Chiliz Chain and Base, with all three chains sharing a single unified token supply.
The expansion runs on LayerZero and its Omnichain Fungible Token (OFT) standard, which coordinates token movement between networks without issuing separate wrapped versions on each chain.
How LayerZero OFT Keeps Token Supply Unified Across Chains
Standard cross-chain bridges create a synthetic wrapped token on the destination chain backed by a lockup on the origin chain, which splits total supply into distinct assets. OFT works differently: the protocol locks supply on one network while releasing the equivalent on another, so the global count never changes and no separate wrapped token exists. $MENGO on Solana and $MENGO on Chiliz Chain are the same token, not two assets that track each other.
Chiliz described Chiliz Chain as "the absolute foundational layer for Fan Tokens" in its announcement, framing Solana and Base as distribution networks that widen access to assets that are natively issued and governed on Chiliz Chain.
Why Chiliz Brought Brazilian Fan Tokens to Solana
Chiliz cited Solana's sub-second block times and sub-cent transaction fees in its announcement, positioning the network as well-suited for sports fans and retail token holders who may transact in smaller sizes and expect near-instant confirmation. Brazil is among Latin America's largest crypto markets, and Solana carries a significant global base of on-chain traders across decentralized exchange infrastructure.
"Adding support for Solana broadens fan-token distribution into an ecosystem that already includes a large base of global on-chain traders," the Chiliz announcement states.
Flamengo, Palmeiras, and Three Other Série A Giants
All five clubs compete in Brazil's top-flight Série A. Flamengo, which issues $MENGO, is among the largest football clubs in the world by supporter base, with more than 40 million fans cited in the Chiliz announcement. Palmeiras ($VERDAO), Fluminense ($FLU), Vasco da Gama ($VASCO), and São Paulo FC ($SPFC) round out the initial cohort.
The club affiliations give fan token holders access to governance votes on club-related decisions via Socios.com, Chiliz's fan engagement platform. Token holders do not receive ownership stakes, revenue rights, or equity in the underlying clubs.
Fan Token Risks
Fan tokens are speculative crypto-assets subject to extreme price movements, and Chiliz's announcement includes a disclosure of potential complete investment loss. Imitation tokens using the same ticker symbols can circulate on any public network; the announcement advises verifying official mint addresses before transacting.
