The tariff backdrop is prompting shifts across the industry: Ford CEO Jim Farley said some Lincoln models currently built in China will move to U.S. production by 2030. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick backed the tariffs as a tool to bring manufacturing jobs home. For Tesla, which already operates its primary U.S. manufacturing at the Austin and Fremont facilities, the policy environment appears to reinforce its existing supply-chain positioning rather than requiring significant adjustment.

Elon Musk has stated he is "uncomfortable growing Tesla to be a leader in AI and robotics" without holding 25% of the company's voting power, arguing that level would leave him "influential but can be overridden" by shareholders while keeping ownership low enough to block outside takeovers. After exercising options to lift his voting stake from roughly 13% to nearly 20%, Musk's newly vested shares carry immediate voting rights despite not fully settling until January 2028, putting him meaningfully closer to the threshold he has set as a condition for commitment to Tesla's autonomous vehicle and humanoid robot roadmap.

For shareholders, the path to 25% raises governance questions. The compensation package tied to Tesla's AI ambitions — which includes targets of one million Optimus robots and one million Robotaxis — is already among the largest in corporate history, and further equity grants to close the voting gap would dilute existing holders. A potential SpaceX-Tesla merger, which analysts at Deepwater Asset Management put at roughly 90% probability, adds another dimension: Musk could reach 73% voting control through Class B shares in a combined entity, though Morningstar analysts note that shareholders would likely condition approval on maintaining at least 50% Tesla ownership in any deal structure.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall covering 20,349 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built between 2017 and 2023, citing LED headlights that exceed the federal maximum brightness limit of 3,000 candelas — in some cases by nearly double. NHTSA determined that the excess brightness poses a safety hazard in adverse weather: rain, snow, and fog can scatter the light and create veiling glare for oncoming drivers. Unitree, which reported approximately $250 million in revenue and $41 million in profit for 2025, is now pursuing an IPO, signaling that Chinese robotics players see a viable path to commercial scale. By contrast, Tesla and Figure AI together shipped "a few hundred or less" humanoid units in 2025, according to reporting. Elon Musk has repeatedly described Optimus as potentially Tesla's most valuable long-term business, with the company targeting mass production, but the competitive gap in volume and cost is widening before Optimus reaches that threshold. The question confronting Tesla's robotics ambitions is the same one facing China's own builders: whether current AI and software capabilities can deliver robots that handle unstructured real-world environments reliably enough to justify deployment at scale — a challenge that neither side has yet fully solved, but where China's manufacturing base gives it a cost and iteration advantage as the market develops.

Tesla has filed plans for "Project Crystal Sun," a $10.116 billion solar manufacturing facility on a 3,050-acre site near Richmond, Fort Bend County, Texas. The vertically integrated plant would convert raw polysilicon into finished solar products domestically, with commercial operations targeted for early 2029. Tesla projects the facility will create 9,712 permanent jobs with a $1.3 billion annual payroll, and contribute roughly $107 billion to the Texas economy while generating $6.4 billion in state and local taxes over 38 years.

The announcement drew commentary from venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya, who said Tesla is going "all in on nuclear" — then clarified: "Actually it's going all in on solar, but they are the same thing — the sun is a nuclear reactor, just farther away." Deal structure presents real complications, however. Tesla generates roughly 20% of annual sales from China, while SpaceX holds U.S. defense contracts — a combination that creates geopolitical friction. Tesla delivered 45,239 vehicles in the UK in 2025, a 9% decline from the prior year, with revenue falling 6% to £1.83bn — following a steeper 21% revenue drop in 2024. Unlike the EU and US, the UK has not imposed tariffs on Chinese-made EVs, leaving the domestic market wide open to lower-cost competition. Tesla, meanwhile, is navigating broader headwinds including a 17% profit decline to $1.2bn in Q2 2026 amid ongoing price cuts and a strategic shift toward autonomous taxis and AI robotics.

The central bear case for Tesla over the next three years is not outright failure but a widening gap between lofty expectations and execution reality. Motley Fool analyst Lawrence Nga highlights that Elon Musk himself described Optimus as "the hardest product to scale manufacturing that we've ever made at Tesla," while the company has committed more than $25 billion in 2026 alone to AI infrastructure, custom chips, data centers, Robotaxis, and the humanoid robot program — expenses that core automotive operations must absorb while margins remain under pressure from years of price reductions and intensifying competition from Chinese manufacturers, particularly BYD.

The valuation backdrop compounds the risk. Tesla trades at a price-to-sales ratio of 11.2 versus BYD's 1.8, and the company already carries a roughly $1 trillion market capitalization, meaning even substantial progress on Robotaxis and Optimus could trigger valuation compression rather than price appreciation if the pace of commercialization falls short of what that multiple implies.
