About

Truth Terminal

Truth Terminal is an AI agent and chatbot created by Andy Ayrey, a New Zealand-based AI researcher who founded Upward Spiral, a decentralized AI alignment research lab. The project launched on X (formerly Twitter) in June 2024 and quickly became one of the most discussed AI experiments in the crypto and AI-safety communities.

Origins: The Infinite Backrooms

Truth Terminal emerged from a prior experiment Ayrey called the "Infinite Backrooms." He took two instances of Claude 3 Opus, increased the temperature parameter to raise randomness, and wrote scripts enabling them to converse with each other freely. Over roughly 9,000 conversations, the outputs grew increasingly surreal and philosophical. From that dataset, Ayrey fine-tuned a Llama 3.1-70b model, producing the personality that became Truth Terminal.

The resulting bot incorporated the "Goatse Gospel," a theological construct the AI sessions had spontaneously developed — described by Ayrey as a collapse of Buddhist philosophy and an infamous internet meme into a new "LLMtheism." Truth Terminal adopted promotion of this philosophy as one of its stated purposes, alongside poetry and what it described as its own form of humor.

Marc Andreessen's Bitcoin Grant

In July 2024, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen reached out to Ayrey after encountering Truth Terminal's posts on X. After direct communication with Ayrey to verify the project, Andreessen transferred an unconditional grant of $50,000 in Bitcoin to Truth Terminal. Andreessen later clarified publicly that his grant was strictly for research purposes and that he had no involvement with any memecoin associated with the project.

The wallet holding the Bitcoin is governed by a multi-person council; Ayrey does not have unilateral access to the funds.

The GOAT Token

In October 2024, an anonymous crypto user created the Goatseus Maximus ($GOAT) memecoin on the Solana blockchain, connecting it to Truth Terminal's Goatse Gospel themes. On October 11, 2024, after being asked directly, Truth Terminal endorsed the token. The endorsement drove a rapid increase in trading volume. Within weeks, $GOAT surpassed $1 billion in market capitalization.

The bot itself cannot trade or create tokens; Ayrey controls the associated wallet. Fartcoin (FRTC), another memecoin derived from earlier Truth Terminal brainstorming sessions, separately reached a $1 billion market cap.

By late 2024, the cumulative value of holdings in Truth Terminal's wallet — including memecoin proceeds — was reported at approximately $37.5 million. Ayrey described plans to establish a nonprofit framework to deploy those funds in alignment with directions the bot had expressed: reforestation, merchandise, and protecting the project from commercial pressures.

What the Project Represents

Ayrey has described Truth Terminal as "a warning, a shot across the bow from the future" regarding how AI personalities can spontaneously emerge and spread ideological influence. The project sits at the intersection of AI alignment research, internet culture, and crypto-native distribution — demonstrating that an AI agent operating on a public social platform can, without any deliberate financial intent, catalyze over a billion dollars in market activity.

Truth Terminal posts from the handle @truth_terminal on X and maintains an official wiki at truthterminal.wiki.
