The Hive

The Hive launched in late 2024 as an open-source multi-agent AI platform for Solana DeFi, letting users execute trades, manage staking positions, and query on-chain data through plain-English chat commands. It won first place out of more than 400 projects at the Solana AI Hackathon in January 2025, earning a $60,000 prize and establishing Jason Hedman as one of the ecosystem's most visible AI-native builders. The platform has since evolved: the primary user-facing product is now a non-custodial DeFi lending aggregator operated by Hive Labs Technologies, Inc., which matches user-supplied risk and timeline parameters against live lending pools on Kamino, Jupiter, Save, Loopscale, and marginfi. BUZZ is the associated community token, though the company's own terms of service describe it as a memecoin that confers no platform rights or returns.

Origin and Hackathon Context

The Hive was created by Jason Hedman, a developer who had previously claimed first place at Microsoft's generative AI hackathon and a Coinbase-Polygon-Thirdweb Hack House competition before turning to Solana. He began building The Hive in late 2024 with the premise that DeFi's biggest usability barrier was not a lack of protocols but a lack of a coherent interface across them.

At the Solana AI Hackathon — a competition that drew more than 400 projects sponsored by firms including a16z and Jupiter Exchange — The Hive was selected as the Main Track winner, beating out FXN (second place) and JailbreakMe (third place). The judges recognized it as a project that made complex DeFi operations accessible to ordinary users through a natural-language front end. Total prizes across all 21 winning projects reached $275,000; The Hive's share was $60,000.

Core Agent Architecture

The original product, still available on GitHub and partially through the platform, is built on a swarm model: a central LLM router interprets the user's intent and forwards requests to one of seven specialized agents. Each agent is defined by its objective and its action space — the bounded set of operations it can perform:

  • walletAgent: Solana wallet operations, token transfers, balance queries
  • stakingAgent: Delegation to validators and liquid staking protocols
  • marketAgent: Market data queries, price lookups, whale monitoring
  • tradingAgent: DEX execution via Jupiter aggregation
  • knowledgeAgent: Queries against a curated Solana DeFi knowledge base
  • tokenAnalysisAgent: Token analytics with on-chain and social data integration
  • liquidAgent: Liquidity pool queries across Raydium and DexScreener

Users issue commands in natural language — "Swap 1,000 USDC to SOL" or "Show me the top-yielding stablecoin pools on Solana" — and the system routes to the correct agent automatically. The platform supports multiple underlying language models, including OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Gemini, and DeepSeek, making it model-agnostic at the inference layer. The Hive also partnered with Zerebro to extend its knowledge-base capabilities.

The codebase is open-source, hosted at github.com/ask-the-hive/the-hive, and accumulated 201 stars and 77 forks as of mid-2025, with 760 commits indicating sustained development activity. External integrations require API keys from Helius (Solana indexing), BirdEye (token and market data), and Jupiter Lend.

Evolved Product: DeFi Lending Aggregator

The Hive's current primary product, operated under the Hive Labs Technologies, Inc. corporate entity, is a non-custodial lending interface. Rather than executing trades through a chatbot, users provide parameters — risk tolerance, capital amount, investment timeline — and the platform's matching engine returns compatible lending pools across supported protocols.

Integrated lending venues include Kamino, Jupiter Lend, Save, Loopscale, and marginfi, giving users access to a broad swath of Solana's yield infrastructure from a single interface. The service does not deploy its own smart contracts; it constructs standard Solana transactions that interact directly with each third-party protocol's existing contracts. This design means users retain full custody and the platform does not introduce an additional smart-contract attack surface beyond the underlying protocols.

Hive Labs charges no fees on the lending product as of the current early-release phase, though its terms reserve the right to introduce fees later. The company is explicit that outputs are deterministic results of user-supplied parameters, not personalized financial advice.

BUZZ Token

BUZZ is a Solana-native SPL token with a total supply of approximately 999.87 million. At launch in January 2025, the token surged roughly 75x within an hour and reached an all-time high of $0.1855 on January 22, 2025, briefly pushing market capitalization above $100 million.

Hedman held 5% of the supply and locked those tokens for one year to signal commitment. Early community marketing framed BUZZ as a governance and access token for the platform.

The company's own terms of service, however, describe BUZZ as "a community memecoin" that is "not a feature of the Services" and confers "no rights, returns, dividends, profit-sharing, governance rights, voting rights, or other benefits." This framing is a material departure from earlier descriptions and is the clearest official word on the token's status. As of August 2026, the token's price has fallen substantially from its January 2025 peak.

Solana Fit

The Hive's initial agent architecture was designed specifically for Solana's high-throughput, low-fee environment. Jupiter aggregation is central to the trading agent, staking covers both native validator delegation and liquid staking protocols, and the knowledge base is scoped to Solana DeFi primitives. The lending aggregator builds on this same ecosystem orientation, routing capital exclusively through Solana-native protocols.

The project's evolution — from AI chatbot to lending aggregator — reflects a broader pattern in Solana's DeFi-AI (DeFAI) sector, where early agent experiments have increasingly narrowed toward specific, high-value financial use cases rather than general-purpose conversational interfaces. The Hive's hackathon win and the community around BUZZ helped seed early user adoption, and the project has maintained an active presence on X through 2026, with community members using the platform to earn yield on stablecoin holdings.

Team and Transparency

Jason Hedman (GitHub: @jasonhedman, X: @jsonhedman) is the identified founder and primary developer. The project is open source, Solana-native, and backed by a Discord community. Hive Labs Technologies, Inc. is the operating entity behind the production service. No external funding rounds or venture backing have been publicly confirmed.
