Solarplex

Solarplex was a decentralized social platform designed specifically for the Solana community. At its peak it spanned more than 100 countries and 900 cities and had facilitated over 120,000 NFT purchases on Solana. The platform was acquired by Forward Research — the R&D arm behind the Arweave network — in June 2024 and announced as transitioning to an open-source, non-profit public good on the Arweave permaweb. The official domain (solarplex.xyz) no longer resolves and the product is not available as a live service.

What Solarplex Was

Solarplex combined a Solana-native social feed with an on-chain creator monetisation layer. The platform was often described as "Hacker News for Solana" or "Product Hunt for Solana" — a community hub where builders could surface projects, discuss ecosystem developments, and receive direct feedback. At the same time it layered crypto-native mechanics — NFT reactions, tips, and collectible stamps — on top of the standard social feed.

The platform was built on Bluesky's AT Protocol, a decentralised social networking protocol developed independently of any single platform. That foundation meant posts and social graphs were not locked into Solarplex's own infrastructure. Users could connect a Phantom wallet to access the full feature set, though browsing was free without one.

Founder Viksit Gaur summed up the platform's thesis at the time of its acquisition: "Decentralisation and free speech are key pillars of the future of social networks — but realising and sustaining this vision requires enabling creators to monetise their content independently of big tech's entrenched interests."

Creator Missions and Collectible Stamps

The distinctive mechanic on Solarplex was the creator mission system. Creators could define missions — tasks ranging from a daily check-in to minting a specific NFT collectible directly in the social feed — and fans who completed them earned collectible stamps. These stamps were not purely cosmetic; they were designed to unlock digital experiences and, in some cases, real-world rewards.

The stamp and mission system gave Solarplex a different engagement model from standard social apps. Rather than optimising purely for attention, it built a loop where sustained participation produced tangible on-chain assets. Because stamps were issued on Solana, they were transferable and provably scarce.

Solana News Curation

Alongside the creator layer, Solarplex ran an AI-assisted news feed. A crawler indexed key Solana news sources and a machine-learning layer generated headlines, which human reviewers then curated. The result was a consolidated Solana-specific news surface within the same app, reducing the need for users to aggregate feeds across Twitter, Discord, and separate newsletters.

Community forums for AMAs and product brainstorming sessions were also embedded in the platform. A public contribution leaderboard surfaced active participants, tying social standing to verifiable on-chain activity rather than follower counts.

Solarplex Frames

In February 2024 — a few months before the acquisition — Solarplex launched Solarplex Frames, an open-source SDK that allowed developers to embed interactive mini-apps inside posts in the social feed. A Frame could trigger an API call or invoke a Solana program directly from a post, without the user leaving the feed.

The most visible early implementation, built in collaboration with Crossmint, let users mint a compressed NFT (cNFT) on Solana by liking and reposting a Frame post and clicking a Mint button. The NFT was delivered to the user's connected wallet within seconds. This brought the kind of interactivity that Farcaster Frames had introduced on Ethereum to the Solana social layer, and it used Solana's compressed NFT standard to keep costs near zero.

Acquisition by Forward Research

On 6 June 2024, Forward Research — the research and development organisation behind Arweave — announced it had acquired both Solarplex and the video platform Odysee. The Solarplex team joined Forward Research to develop social capabilities on the Arweave network.

Forward Research cited Arweave's Universal Data License and permanent storage infrastructure as the technical foundation that would allow Solarplex to fulfil its creator-monetisation mission without depending on centralised infrastructure or advertising revenue. The announcement stated that Solarplex would continue as an open-source, non-profit public good.

In practice, the Solana-facing consumer product wound down. The solarplex.xyz domain does not respond as of this writing, and no successor product on Arweave's permaweb has launched at a publicly accessible address. The GitHub documentation repository (solarplex-xyz/docs) remains accessible but is no longer maintained.

Ecosystem Significance

Despite its short commercial run, Solarplex left a mark on Solana's social layer. The 120,000+ on-chain collectible interactions it generated represent a meaningful body of evidence that users will engage with creator-defined missions when the costs are low and the rewards are on-chain. Solarplex Frames anticipated the broader movement toward in-feed mini-apps that has continued to develop across Solana's social ecosystem.

The AT Protocol foundation the team chose in 2022 and 2023 has also proved prescient: Bluesky's subsequent growth validated the protocol's viability as a decentralised social substrate, even if Solarplex itself did not survive long enough to benefit from that momentum.
