What Was Solarplex

Solarplex was a Web3 social media and creator platform built on Solana, designed to address a fragmentation problem in the ecosystem: valuable builders, projects, and discussions were scattered across Twitter, Discord, and standalone forums, with no dedicated home for community discovery and creator-audience engagement.

The platform was conceived in early 2023, publicly articulating its ambition to be "Hacker News for Solana" — a community-curated hub where builders could post projects, gather feedback, and surface relevant ecosystem news. Over time the product evolved into a fuller creator economy platform, incorporating on-chain collectibles, engagement rewards, and in-feed NFT minting, with the tagline shifting to emphasize creator-fan relationships over developer discussion.

How It Worked

Solarplex layered two complementary technologies. For social and messaging infrastructure it built on the AT Protocol — the open standard also underlying Bluesky — giving users portable identities and decentralized data. For economic activity, including NFTs, tipping, and on-chain content records, it used Solana, exploiting the network's low fees and high throughput.

Users connected through a wallet rather than a traditional email account, establishing a Web3 identity that carried their activity and reputation across the platform. No SOL was required to browse or participate in basic community features; the Phantom wallet was the recommended interface for users who wanted to engage with on-chain features.

Content discovery worked through a hybrid system: an automated AI crawler surfaced Solana-related news while community upvotes and downvotes trained the algorithm over time. The result was a feed that mixed editorial curation with collective intelligence, organized to keep builders informed about ecosystem developments without requiring constant monitoring of other social channels.

Key Features

Product showcase and discovery. Builders could post projects for community review, gather feedback, and build visibility within the Solana ecosystem. Community members tested projects and upvoted the most promising ones, creating an organic ranking mechanism comparable to Product Hunt. The platform also positioned itself as a central resource hub to fill gaps in the Solana documentation and community infrastructure landscape.

Creator missions and engagement tools. Creators could configure missions — structured engagement tasks ranging from daily check-ins to specific interaction requirements — that rewarded participating community members with verifiable on-chain activity records. This turned passive following into active, trackable participation that creators could analyze through detailed follower engagement analytics available through the creator program.

Compressed NFT minting in-feed. One of Solarplex's technically distinctive features was allowing creators to mint compressed NFTs (cNFTs) directly within the social feed. Compressed NFTs on Solana use state compression to reduce minting costs by orders of magnitude compared to standard NFTs, making micro-scale collectible drops economically practical. Crossmint built integration tooling that extended this capability: users could trigger a Solana cNFT mint by liking or reposting a designated post, a mechanic analogous to how Farcaster Frames enable on-chain actions from within a social feed. The creator program required an application to access this and other advanced tools.

Collectible stamps. Community members earned collectible stamps through participation, which unlocked digital and real-world experiences. The stamp system created a persistent on-chain record of community standing and activity, giving long-term contributors a verifiable history of their engagement.

SOL tipping. Users could tip creators directly within posts using SOL, creating a direct monetization channel that bypassed advertising. This positioned Solarplex as a platform where audience support flowed directly to creators rather than through a centralized intermediary.

Leaderboard and karma. A public leaderboard tracked contributor activity and rewarded the most engaged community members. The early project documentation described an open karma system with pluggable oracle architecture, designed so karma scores could be consumed by other on-chain applications, enabling karma to function as a composable reputation primitive for the broader Solana ecosystem.

Scale and Reach

At its operational peak Solarplex reported activity across more than 100 countries and 900 cities. The platform facilitated over 120,000 NFT purchases on Solana. These figures reflected a user base that had grown beyond Solana developers to include a broader creator and collector community engaging with the platform's collectible mechanics.

Team and Background

The project was founded in 2022 and headquartered in California. Viksit Gaur (@viksit) was the primary public face of the project, handling alpha access coordination and community development. The early conceptual phase drew on the Dispatch forums protocol as its underlying discussion infrastructure before the product expanded into its fuller creator platform form. The platform's early documentation was collaborative and open, inviting alpha testers to contribute to product direction via the public GitHub repository.

Acquisition and Shutdown

In June 2024, Forward Research — the R&D incubator behind the Arweave permanent storage protocol and the broader Permaweb ecosystem — announced the simultaneous acquisition of Solarplex and Odysee, a decentralized video platform. Forward Research framed the acquisitions as adding over seven million combined users to the Arweave ecosystem. The stated plan was to transition Solarplex into an open-source, non-profit public good operating on the Permaweb rather than on Solana, with the Solarplex team joining Forward Research to continue developing social capabilities on Arweave's infrastructure.

Following the acquisition, the original Solarplex platform at solarplex.xyz was decommissioned. The domain is now parked on Namecheap. The @solarplex_xyz account on X has been inactive since the transition, and the original Solana-based product is no longer accessible.

Solana Ecosystem Fit

During its active period, Solarplex occupied a distinct role in the Solana ecosystem as a community-native discovery and creator layer. It was one of the more concrete implementations of SocialFi principles on Solana, combining social engagement with genuine on-chain economic activity. Its use of compressed NFTs for creator-fan interaction represented a practical application of Solana's state compression technology, introduced in 2023, at a scale and cost point that made in-feed collectible drops viable for individual creators rather than only large-budget NFT projects. The platform's ultimate acquisition by an Arweave-aligned organization rather than continuation as a Solana-native product reflected the competitive dynamics in decentralized social infrastructure during that period.
