IoTeX
IoTeX is a decentralized infrastructure platform built to solve the trust gap between physical machines and AI-driven applications — providing a blockchain, identity, and compute layer that enables real-world devices to contribute verifiable data to decentralized networks and AI systems.
Background and Team
IoTeX was co-founded in 2017 by Raullen Chai, Jing Sun, Qevan Guo, and Xinxin Fan. Chai holds a PhD in cryptography from the University of Waterloo and worked previously at Oracle, Google (senior software engineer), and Uber (head of cryptography R&D). Guo contributed expertise from Facebook, where he was a research scientist and engineering manager. The team's grounding in cryptography and large-scale distributed systems shaped IoTeX's technical identity from its founding.
The mainnet launched in 2019 and has operated for over seven years. The project is classified as community-published, with the IoTeX Foundation governing the treasury and protocol development.
Core Architecture
IoTeX operates a full-stack infrastructure consisting of several integrated layers:
IoTeX L1 Blockchain: An EVM-compatible Layer-1 optimized for DePIN and real-world AI applications. It provides settlement, governance, and programmability for machine economies. The chain processes transactions and hosts smart contracts that interact with physical-world data. A significant June 2026 upgrade ("Yap", v2.4.0) brought full Ethereum Pectra compatibility and native account abstraction to the network.
W3bstream: A real-time data attestation and compute layer that connects smart devices to smart contracts. W3bstream generates zero-knowledge validity proofs for data originating from physical devices, allowing on-chain applications to consume sensor data, device activity, or location signals with cryptographic assurance that the data is authentic and untampered.
ioID: A decentralized identity framework that assigns verifiable, machine-readable identities to devices and AI agents. Each device or agent operating in the IoTeX ecosystem receives a unique on-chain identifier with cryptographic credentials, establishing a root of trust for machine-to-machine and machine-to-contract interaction.
QuickSilver: An AI interaction layer that transforms raw machine data streams into structured, verifiable AI context. Where W3bstream certifies data origin and integrity, QuickSilver makes that data usable by AI inference pipelines in real time — bridging the gap between sensor output and AI model input.
DIMs (DePIN Infrastructure Modules): A suite of modular tools for DePIN project developers covering data attestation, device identity provisioning, staking mechanics, and network coordination — enabling DePIN projects to build on IoTeX's middleware rather than re-implementing these primitives from scratch.
Trio: A multimodal foundational AI model announced in June 2026 as part of IoTeX's Anti-Roadmap initiative, designed to enable AI to understand and operate in the physical world using the verified data streams flowing through IoTeX's infrastructure.
Token and Economics
IOTX is the native utility token powering governance, staking, incentive distribution, and interoperability between machine economies across the ecosystem. IOTX is listed on major exchanges including Binance. The project reports an aggregate ecosystem market cap of over five billion dollars across all projects building on IoTeX's infrastructure.
Consensus is managed by a delegate set of 36 validators. Independent analysis has flagged this as a meaningful centralization factor relative to larger validator networks. The project achieved MiCA compliance across EU member states — a regulatory milestone for a platform focused on IoT data provenance.
DePIN Ecosystem Scale
IoTeX has positioned itself as the primary purpose-built infrastructure chain for DePIN. As of mid-2026, the platform reports more than 25 million connected DePIN devices and approximately 399 ecosystem projects. On-chain data shows roughly 250,000 daily transactions and around 8,900 daily active wallets, with protocol revenue growing incrementally quarter-over-quarter — though absolute revenue figures remain modest relative to reported hardware scale.
Notable ecosystem partnerships include Animoca Brands, Vodafone, Filecoin, and Theta. IoTeX's Realm framework enables developers to build custom machine intelligence economies within the network.
Security: ioTube Bridge Exploit (February 2026)
On February 21, 2026, a compromised private key on the Ethereum side of the ioTube cross-chain bridge gave an attacker control over the bridge's validator contract. The attacker upgraded the contract maliciously and minted approximately 410 million unauthorized CIOTX tokens, draining roughly 4.4 million dollars in assets including USDC, USDT, IOTX, WBTC, and BUSD. IOTX dropped approximately 22% in the immediate aftermath.
IoTeX confirmed that the Layer-1 blockchain, consensus mechanism, and native smart contracts were unaffected. The foundation offered the attacker a 10% bounty to return funds and committed to full compensation of all affected users from the Foundation Treasury — funded entirely in stablecoins and non-IOTX reserves with no IOTX liquidation on public markets. The ioTube bridge was suspended pending independent security audits. The incident was characterized as an operational security failure (key compromise) rather than a smart contract flaw, and Binance trading resumed after the compensation framework was established.
IoTeX has also initiated post-quantum cryptographic security work, receiving industry recognition for its cryptographic agility program and launching an SPP Wallet on Testnet in early 2026.
Position in the Broader Ecosystem
IoTeX operates as an independent Layer-1 blockchain rather than a chain built on Solana or Ethereum. Its relevance spans the broader DePIN conversation across ecosystems, as it serves as a reference implementation for machine identity and verifiable data infrastructure — concepts increasingly relevant to DePIN projects on all major chains. The project's technical roadmap centers on enabling AI inference over real-world data: using verified IoT device signals to ground model outputs in physical-world facts rather than synthetic or historical training data alone. With Trio, ioID, and QuickSilver together, IoTeX positions itself as infrastructure for what it calls "the open ecosystem for real-world AI."
