Hivemapper

Hivemapper is a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN) that crowdsources street-level mapping data from everyday drivers and rewards them with HONEY tokens on Solana. Where traditional mapping companies like Google deploy fleets of expensive dedicated vehicles — costing an estimated $500,000 per company assessment — Hivemapper turns the global driving public into a distributed mapping workforce, producing map data that is fresher, broader, and more economically accessible than centralized alternatives.

Background and Team

Hivemapper was founded by Ariel Seidman, who began his career at Yahoo! Maps in 2004 and launched an earlier iteration of the company in 2015 focused on drone-based aerial mapping. After years of iteration, the team pivoted to consumer dashcams as the primary data-collection mechanism, and in November 2022, Hivemapper launched its decentralized network on Solana with Gabe Nelson serving as Head of Operations. The operational entity behind the consumer application is Bee Maps, which builds on top of the Hivemapper protocol and network.

How the Network Works

At the center of Hivemapper is the Bee device — an AI-enabled dashcam that contributors mount in their vehicles. While driving their normal routes, the device passively captures street-level imagery and uploads it to the network. Contributors do not need to change their behavior; the data collection is entirely passive.

When imagery is submitted, Hivemapper's AI pipeline processes it to extract map features: road signs, lane markings, construction zones, detours, and changes to existing road geometry. This continuous ingestion means the map is updated in near-real-time rather than on a multi-year refresh cycle. The network is permissionless — anyone with a Bee device can participate globally without pre-authorization.

Solana's state compression technology is a foundational component of Hivemapper's infrastructure. By compressing contributor transactions using Merkle trees, the network can handle the enormous volume of on-chain activity generated by millions of mapping events at a cost that would be prohibitive on other chains. As Head of Operations Gabe Nelson explained, "The ability to compress those transactions with Merkle trees has been a huge enabler for us in terms of the cost and speed."

HONEY Token and Rewards

HONEY is the economic engine of the Hivemapper Network, with a maximum supply of 10 billion tokens. Contributors earn HONEY through several mechanisms governed by on-chain rules:

Map Coverage Rewards represent 80.5% of weekly minted tokens and go to drivers collecting imagery. Earnings are not flat — they vary based on regional map progress, route freshness, tile saturation, and the usability and clarity of submitted footage. Driving under-mapped roads in areas with low coverage yields higher rewards than re-mapping already well-documented routes.

Map Editing and QA Rewards (10% of weekly minted tokens) compensate contributors who annotate map data and train the AI models through AI Trainer games — no dashcam required for this participation path.

Operational Rewards (9.5%) support network infrastructure, with an expectation that this allocation may shift over time toward device contributors as decentralized computing infrastructure matures.

Map Consumption Rewards operate outside the weekly minted allocation. When enterprise customers purchase map data using map credits, HONEY is burned. A portion of the burned tokens — up to 500,000 HONEY per week under current parameters — is re-minted and distributed to the contributors who generated the consumed data. This creates a direct economic link between enterprise demand for map data and contributor earnings.

HONEY Bursts allow customers to post bounties targeting specific geographic areas, directing contributor attention toward coverage gaps the customer needs. The Hivemapper Foundation also issues direct Foundation Rewards for network growth activities such as device activation and participation in improvement proposals.

To lower barriers to participation, Bee Maps launched a Bee Membership subscription plan, replacing a previous upfront device cost of approximately $600 with a $19 per month plan that bundles hardware, LTE connectivity, and fleet software. Roughly 70% of the total HONEY supply had been minted as of late 2025, with team and investor token unlocks on a 36-month schedule ending November 2025.

Network Scale and Enterprise Adoption

By mid-2026, Hivemapper contributors had mapped more than 21 million unique kilometers of road — approximately 33% to 35% of the global road network. Hivemapper's community achieved this coverage roughly five times faster than Google mapped roads with its Street View fleet.

Enterprise adoption has reached a significant scale. Bee Maps' customers include several of the world's leading mapping and mobility companies: HERE, TomTom, Mapbox, Trimble, and Lyft. In July 2025, Volkswagen's autonomous driving technology unit (ADMT) selected Hivemapper to supply real-time mapping data for its robotaxi program — a validation of the DePIN model's fitness for safety-critical autonomous vehicle applications.

In October 2025, Bee Maps closed a $32 million funding round led by Pantera Capital, with participation from LDA Capital, Borderless Capital, and Ajna Capital. The capital is being deployed to accelerate global Bee device distribution, expand the AI pipeline that converts raw imagery into structured map features, and increase contributor incentives tied to HONEY. Co-founder Ariel Seidman stated: "With this funding, we are accelerating global device deployments, expanding coverage, and strengthening our AI pipeline."

In May 2026, the Hivemapper Foundation committed at least 10 million HONEY in additional incentives for contributors mapping under-covered roads through June 2026, continuing the network's systematic drive toward complete global road coverage.

Fit in the Solana Ecosystem

Hivemapper is one of Solana's most prominent DePIN deployments, demonstrating that on-chain token incentives and Solana's high-throughput, low-cost transaction layer can coordinate real-world physical infrastructure at scale. The project's architecture — using state compression to minimize on-chain costs for high-frequency mapping events, pairing a hardware device with a token reward layer, and linking enterprise data consumption directly to contributor earnings through a burn-and-remint mechanism — has become a reference model for DePIN projects building on Solana.

The network's trajectory from launch in November 2022 to over one-third of global road coverage by mid-2026, combined with enterprise partnerships with household names in the mapping and mobility industry, positions Hivemapper as one of the most substantively validated DePIN protocols in the blockchain space.
