Hivemapper

Hivemapper is a decentralized physical infrastructure (DePIN) network that turns everyday driving into a global mapping operation. Contributors attach a purpose-built dashcam called the Bee to their windshield, drive their normal routes, and earn HONEY tokens in exchange for high-quality street-level imagery. That imagery feeds a continuously refreshed map that enterprises — from logistics platforms to autonomous vehicle programs — purchase as real-time, cost-effective data. The entire reward and payment cycle runs on Solana.

From Startup to Network

Founded in 2014, Hivemapper spent years in the geospatial industry before pivoting to a blockchain-native model. The Hivemapper Network launched in November 2022, choosing Solana for its throughput and state compression capabilities. Within four months of launch, the network had already processed over 11 million transactions — a volume that would have made on-chain operations prohibitively expensive on most other chains. Solana's Merkle tree compression allowed Hivemapper to keep reward cycles fast and fees low even as the contributor base scaled.

How the Network Works

The core loop is straightforward: a contributor mounts a Bee dashcam, drives, and the device captures street-level imagery. That imagery is uploaded to the network, processed by AI, and used to update map tiles. Contributors are rewarded based on several factors including the freshness of their coverage area, the usability of their imagery, and whether they are filling in under-mapped roads versus re-covering saturated areas.

The network also includes a second earning pathway: AI Trainer games. Contributors use a browser-based interface to review and label AI-generated map annotations — verifying road signs, correcting lane markings, and improving object recognition models. Both driving and AI training contributions are recorded on Solana and rewarded with HONEY.

HONEY Token Mechanics

HONEY has a maximum supply of 10 billion tokens, with 40% allocated to contributors, 20% to investors, 20% to employees, 15% to Hivemapper Inc., and 5% to the Hivemapper Foundation. The token follows a burn-and-mint model designed to align network growth with token value. When enterprises purchase map data using map credits (priced at $0.02 each), 75% of the corresponding HONEY is permanently burned. This creates deflationary pressure as demand scales — the more data enterprises consume, the more tokens exit circulation.

HONEY can be redeemed on-chain and swapped for SOL, USDC, or other assets on major exchanges.

Coverage and Scale

Hivemapper's crowdsourced model has proven substantially faster at expanding global coverage than traditional centralized fleets. By 2025, the network had captured over 20 million kilometers of unique road imagery — roughly one-third of all paved roads on earth — in under three years. For comparison, Google has invested billions building Street View over more than a decade. Hivemapper's distributed contributor base, which reached over 165,000 participants globally, achieves at least five times the pace of Google's imagery expansion at a fraction of the capital cost per mile.

Active mapping spans major metropolitan areas across multiple continents including Tokyo, Singapore, Los Angeles, Paris, New York, and Austin, alongside rural and secondary road networks that traditional mapping vehicles rarely prioritize.

Bee Maps: The Enterprise Product Layer

In September 2024, Hivemapper launched Bee Maps as the commercial face of its data business. Where Hivemapper is the decentralized network and protocol, Bee Maps is the B2B product brand that enterprise customers engage with directly. Bee Maps delivers structured, AI-processed map features via API — including lane-level road data, signage updates, construction detections, and other dynamic attributes critical for navigation, logistics, and autonomous vehicle operations.

Enterprise clients confirmed by 2025 included Lyft, Volkswagen's autonomous driving unit (ADMT), Mapbox, HERE, TomTom, and Trimble. Lyft sources Bee Maps data for real-time routing and to support its autonomous vehicle strategy. Volkswagen's robotaxi division uses it for HD mapping of active deployment zones. The breadth of adoption across mobility, logistics, and geospatial data industries validates the network's data quality at commercial scale.

$32 Million Raise to Scale Supply

In October 2025, Bee Maps announced a $32 million funding round led by Pantera Capital, with participation from LDA Capital, Borderless Capital, and Ajna Capital. The raise was described as one of the largest financings in the DePIN sector that year.

CEO Ariel Seidman summarized the company's position clearly: "Demand isn't the issue — scaling supply is." The capital was earmarked for three priorities: deploying more Bee devices globally, expanding AI model capabilities for faster feature extraction, and increasing HONEY incentive payments to attract contributors in coverage-gap regions.

To reduce friction for new contributors, Hivemapper simultaneously introduced Bee Membership — a $19 per month subscription model that bundles LTE-enabled hardware, software access, and HONEY rewards. The subscription replaced the previous upfront hardware cost of around $589, meaningfully lowering the barrier to entry for individual contributors and fleet operators.

Competitive Position

Traditional mapping data is expensive to produce and slow to update. Google's model reportedly costs upward of $500,000 per vehicle per year to operate, with imagery updates taking months to over a year to reach consumers. Hivemapper sidesteps this by monetizing commutes that are already happening. Contributors bear most of the marginal cost of coverage by simply driving their normal routes.

The freshness advantage is particularly valuable for use cases that cannot tolerate stale data: autonomous vehicles navigating construction zones, logistics platforms routing around road closures, and AI training pipelines requiring up-to-date imagery of real-world environments.

Hivemapper's permissionless architecture also means any contributor anywhere can join the network without approval, and any developer can build applications on top of the map data — a structural openness that centralized mapping providers cannot easily replicate.

Infrastructure Status

The Hivemapper program deployed on Solana Mainnet (BNH1dUp3ExFbgo3YctSqQbJXRFn3ffkwbcmSas8azfaW) classifies as a live DePIN product with an SPL-standard asset. The network continues active operations with ongoing contributor incentive programs, including Hivemapper Foundation commitments of at least 10 million HONEY in additional rewards targeting under-mapped road segments through mid-2026.
