Hivemapper

Hivemapper is a crypto network on Solana that builds a street map from dashcam video. Drivers put a Bee camera in their car and drive as usual. The network turns their footage into map data, such as road signs, lane lines and road works. This kind of project is known as DePIN, short for decentralized physical infrastructure.

Bee Maps is the company that sells the Bee and the map data. It is "powered by Hivemapper" and has the same CEO, Ariel Seidman.

The big change came in August 2026. Bee Maps stopped paying HONEY in its app and now pays drivers in USDC, from its own funds. HONEY still trades on Solana, but Bee App drivers no longer earn it.

How the Hivemapper network maps roads

The Hivemapper docs call it "an open, global, and decentralized mapping network that uses AI to build a map from the driving we do everyday." It went live in November 2022.

The Bee films the road as the car moves. It uploads the video over WiFi or its own mobile data link. AI models then pick out map features: signs, lane lines, road works and changes to the road layout.

The pitch is freshness. The docs say collecting map data the old way is "very expensive, so even the best-funded companies struggle to refresh maps at global scale." They add that self-driving cars "require far fresher data" than maps made for people.

The map keeps growing. Hivemapper passed 750 million kilometres mapped on 27 May 2026. In November 2026, the Bee Maps site put global road coverage at 37%.

Bee Maps USDC rewards and how much drivers earn

USDC has been the default reward in the Bee App since August 2026. Bee Maps announced the switch on 16 July 2026. It said Phantom and Breeze wallets would be removed and "we will no longer support HONEY token rewards in the app."

Here is how the rewards work:

• Each Bee has a weekly Goal: a set distance of road to map in its region. Bee Maps announced Goals on 8 October 2026. It says Goals are built so the vast majority of drivers in each region can hit them, and driving past the Goal earns more.
• Each reward week runs Monday to Monday. Payment starts the next Wednesday, per the Bee rewards docs.
• Pay goes to a Circle Wallet inside the Bee App. Drivers can send the USDC on to an address on the Base network.
• Bursts pay extra for driving set spots. On 29 October 2026, Bee Maps posted $500,000 in Bursts across 400+ regions.

USDC rewards were live in 490 regions by 29 September 2026. Bee Maps has promised two weeks' notice before it changes the rules.

There is no fixed rate, so no single answer to "how much does Hivemapper pay." Pay depends on your region's Goal, how far you drive and which Bursts you hit. In Bee Maps' words, the rewards are "funded directly by Bee Maps and offered at our sole discretion."

Bee dashcam price and Bee Membership

The Bee is the third Hivemapper camera. The driving docs say it has more computing power than older models. It also has better satellite positioning and uploads by itself over WiFi or mobile data. The first Hivemapper Dashcam and the HDC-S were dropped in 2024.

Bee Maps launched Bee Membership in October 2025. Its funding announcement priced the plan at $19 a month. That covers a camera with mobile data and Bee Maps software, in place of a one-off $589 price. Back then, the plan's driver rewards were paid in HONEY.

The Bee Maps site lists one plan for the USA and one with global mobile data. Fleet owners can also run Beekeeper, Bee Maps' fleet software, on the same camera.

HONEY token after the switch to USDC

HONEY is the Hivemapper token on Solana. It has a cap of 10 billion tokens. The HONEY docs say the first tokens were minted on 1 November 2022. The HONEY token page shows its live price and supply.

The docs split the full supply like this:

HONEY was built on a "burn and mint" model. Map buyers burn HONEY to get data. Most of the burned HONEY is destroyed for good. Since April 2024, the docs say, the rest (a quarter) goes back to the drivers whose data was used, up to a weekly cap.

Two moves in 2026 weaken that link. On 6 March, Bee Maps moved its data API to pay-as-you-go billing in US dollars. The post does not mention HONEY. Then in July, Bee Maps said it had "terminated our services agreement with the Hivemapper Foundation" as it dropped HONEY from the app.

The Hivemapper Foundation site still says drivers "earn HONEY" for their footage. By 1 November 2026, we found no Foundation post on how drivers earn HONEY now. The main Hivemapper X account had posted nothing since 29 July 2026.

Who buys the map data: Volkswagen, Lyft, TomTom and HERE

Bee Maps makes money by selling road photos, map data and driving video through its API. Its site lists Lyft, Mapbox, TomTom, HERE, Trimble, NBCUniversal and Volkswagen as customers.

The best-known deal is with Volkswagen. In July 2025, the carmaker's self-driving unit, Volkswagen ADMT, chose Bee Maps for its robotaxi fleet. Bee Maps sends it fresh street photos and traffic data. The aim is to find the right spot to pick up and drop off each rider.

Bee Maps also sells video clips of notable driving events, which it calls AI Event Videos. Its API billing post lists them alongside street photos, road detections and Bursts, all paid from a prepaid dollar balance.

Is driving with a Bee worth it? Who it suits

The Bee fits a driver who covers a lot of road each week and wants a small, steady top-up. Rideshare, delivery and fleet drivers in regions with active Goals are the best match, because the weekly Goal rewards distance.

USDC also suits drivers who never wanted crypto price risk. A dollar earned this week is still a dollar next week. That was never true of HONEY.

The Bee suits you less if you drive short, repeated routes, or live where Bee Maps sets no Goal. It is also a poor fit if your main aim is to earn HONEY. That path no longer runs through the Bee App.

For businesses, Bee Maps suits mapping, mobility and self-driving teams that need fresh road data. They pay per API call, in US dollars.

Hivemapper risks and complaints: rewards, HONEY demand and scams

For drivers, the main risk is that rewards are optional for Bee Maps. The company funds USDC pay itself and can change Goals and Bursts with two weeks' notice. Your pay rests on one firm's budget.

Hivemapper has not shut down. Bee Maps still pays drivers each week and still sells data. The quiet part is HONEY, and for HONEY holders the risk is demand. Bee Maps has cut HONEY from its app, ended its deal with the Hivemapper Foundation and bills API users in dollars. It is unclear what will drive HONEY burns or new rewards from here.

Supply is also concentrated. The docs gave Hivemapper Inc., staff and investors 55% of the full supply between them.

Scams are a real risk. On 12 May 2026, a fake "airdrop" link appeared in the Hivemapper Discord's announcements channel. Some users who signed with their wallets were drained. Hivemapper said no admin account was hacked and reported it to the FBI. It warned that you never need to sign a transaction to get rewards.

We found no public security audit of the Hivemapper reward programs. We also could not read who can upgrade the main payment program (BNH1dUp3ExFbgo3YctSqQbJXRFn3ffkwbcmSas8azfaW) when this profile was written. Holders can check it on a Solana explorer.

The app has rough edges too. On 13 October 2026, Bee Maps said a bug showed the wrong upload status while data was still uploading.

Hivemapper vs Google Maps, NATIX and other alternatives

Google Maps is the comparison most people search for. Google shoots Street View with its own cars. Hivemapper's case, set out in its docs, is that paid fleets cost too much to refresh every road often, while everyday drivers can. The trade-off is evenness. Bee coverage is thickest where Bee owners drive, and thin elsewhere.

Among crypto networks, NATIX Network is the closest Solana rival. It collects camera data through a phone app and VX360, a plug-in device that uses a Tesla's own cameras. NATIX pays in its own token. The Bee now pays in USDC.

The choice often comes down to hardware. NATIX can use a phone or a Tesla. The Bee is a dedicated camera with its own data link, sold on a monthly plan.

Team, funding and history of Bee Maps

Hivemapper started in 2015 as a mapping tool for drone pilots. That November it raised a $3 million seed round led by Spark Capital. It later moved to dashcams and crypto rewards. Ariel Seidman, a co-founder, is CEO of Bee Maps. The governance docs say no Bee Maps boss can also hold a role at the Hivemapper Foundation.

The Hivemapper Foundation is a Cayman Islands body set up in 2022. It made network changes through Map Improvement Proposals (MIPs). Each one went up for the community to comment on, then was kept, changed or dropped.

In October 2025, Bee Maps raised $32 million. Pantera Capital led the round, with LDA Capital, Borderless Capital and Ajna Capital. Seidman said at the time that demand was not the problem. The task was to get more cameras on the road. He later spoke about the network's growth and customers at Solana's Breakpoint conference.
