Intelligence Cubed

Intelligence Cubed, known as i³, is a decentralized AI model marketplace built on Solana that its team describes as the world's first "Nasdaq for AI models." Founded in March 2025 by Fernando Jia, the project reframes how machine learning models are created, distributed, and monetized — treating AI models as on-chain assets that can be benchmarked, traded, licensed, and composed, rather than siloed within proprietary platforms.

The Modelverse Concept

The core insight driving i³ is a bet against monolithic large language models. Rather than racing to build one massive general-purpose AI system, i³ argues that a collective swap of specialized, vertical models — each optimized for specific domains — is both more powerful and more democratically owned. The project calls this architecture the "modelverse," a term it coined to describe an open-source ecosystem where model developers and AI creators collaborate, earn, and govern collectively.

The philosophical frame is "d/acc" (defensive acceleration), a movement that advocates for broad participation in AI development rather than concentration of AI capabilities among a small number of labs. i³ explicitly positions itself as infrastructure for crowd-owned AGI: a system where the people who build, train, and use AI models accumulate equity in the ecosystem rather than generating value for centralized corporations.

A useful shorthand the project uses is "Hugging Face meets Uniswap" — the open-model repository of Hugging Face combined with the permissionless trading mechanics of a decentralized exchange.

Technical Architecture

i³ operates on a four-layer architecture:

The Control Layer handles on-chain governance and ownership. AI models are minted as on-chain assets with cryptographic provenance, enabling programmable licensing and automated royalty distribution. This layer enforces intellectual property rights without requiring trust in any central party.

The Service Layer is an off-chain orchestrator that handles real-time inference requests, routing queries intelligently to the best-performing models available. An Auto Router directs user queries based on live performance data, and a Workflow Leaderboard surfaces community-curated multi-model pipelines for complex tasks.

The Storage Layer uses decentralized networks — including IPFS and Filecoin — to store model weights and associated metadata. This eliminates single points of failure and ensures model permanence without reliance on any single hosting provider.

The Execution Layer is a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN) of GPU nodes that provide the compute needed to run inference. i³ has secured $500K+ in compute partnerships with Google Cloud, Azure, and Cloudflare, giving the network enterprise-grade backing during early growth.

Proof of Intelligence and Initial Model Offerings

Two mechanisms central to the i³ economy are Proof of Intelligence (PoI) and Initial Model Offerings (IMOs).

Proof of Intelligence is a validation protocol designed to assess and attest to model originality and performance. Rather than relying on self-reported benchmarks, PoI creates an objective, on-chain record of how well a model performs on standardized tasks. This benchmark is also used to price models as assets — performance drives valuation in the same way earnings drive stock price.

Initial Model Offerings borrow the structure of token launches to apply them to AI model fundraising. Developers can run an IMO to raise early capital from a community of believers before a model goes to market, creating aligned incentives between model creators and the users who benefit from their work.

The create-to-earn structure ties it together: contributors who build, fine-tune, or improve models receive token rewards proportional to the value they add to the network. Pay-per-use access fees from model consumers flow back through the system to creators and stakers.

Multi-Chain Reach with Solana at the Center

While i³ launched with a focus on Solana, particularly given its high throughput and low transaction costs, the platform operates across multiple blockchains: BNB Chain, opBNB, Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum One, zkSync Era, Polygon zkEVM, and Optimism. Wallet integrations include Phantom, MetaMask, WalletConnect, and Coinbase Wallet.

Solana remains the primary home for i³'s on-chain operations. The project participated in the OnePiece Labs × Solana Accelerator, a 10-week program launched in September 2025 that selected 12 projects to build on Solana's fast, composable infrastructure.

Hackathon and Accelerator Traction

i³ claimed first place in the Best x402 API Integration (Main Track) category at the Solana x402 Hackathon — a competition centered on Solana's x402 payment protocol for machine-to-machine micropayments. The win validated i³'s integration of Solana's payment rails into its model access and monetization stack, a natural fit for the pay-per-inference use case.

The project's inclusion in the OPL × Solana Accelerator cohort brought ecosystem visibility alongside product development support. The cohort was selected from across Web3 verticals including RWA tokenization, PayFi infrastructure, and institutional asset management — with i³ as one of the few AI-focused projects.

The advisory team includes more than 10 PhD fellows from institutions including Stanford and MIT, adding academic credibility to what might otherwise appear to be a speculative protocol play.

Published Research

In June 2025, i³ published a preprint titled "Intelligence Cubed: A Decentralized Modelverse for Democratizing AI" on preprints.org, formalizing the theoretical basis for Proof of Intelligence and the IMO mechanism. The paper makes the case for why decentralized model markets are architecturally superior to centralized alternatives for long-run AI development, citing both economic incentive alignment and technical resilience arguments.

Early Traction

Despite launching in early 2025, i³ had by mid-year assembled meaningful early traction: more than 200 AI models pledged from developers ahead of mainnet, 17,700+ organic social followers, and a listing on BNB Chain's DappBay. The platform's testnet was live as of mid-2025. Backing from a tier-one public-chain-affiliated venture capital firm added institutional weight to the project's early fundraise.

Outlook

Intelligence Cubed sits at the intersection of two powerful currents in crypto: the DePIN movement toward decentralized physical compute infrastructure, and the AI agent economy emerging around Solana. The Proof of Intelligence benchmark addresses a genuine problem — the current opacity of model performance claims — while the create-to-earn model offers a credible alternative to the platform extraction dynamics at Hugging Face and similar centralized model hubs. Whether i³ can sustain that initial momentum and build genuine liquidity in its model marketplace is the open question, but its hackathon win and accelerator placement suggest the technical foundations are real.
