Indies on Solana: A Community Residency for Indie Game Developers

TLDR: Indies on Solana is a community-run initiative that gives independent game developers a free, fully supported month in Vietnam to build and ship games on the Solana Mobile platform, with access to real hardware, real players, and zero platform fees.

What It Is

Indies on Solana describes itself as "a community initiative by the Indies for the Indies." The focus is narrow and deliberate: help independent game developers ship quality games on Solana Mobile, specifically the Seeker device, without the financial friction or platform gatekeeping that defines mobile distribution on iOS and Android.

The initiative was founded in 2024 and is led by two developers who go by BK and Zang, who run their own small indie studio. Rather than building a grant program or a DAO treasury, they built something more hands-on: a residency. The core program is called Ship Mode.

Ship Mode: The 30-Day Residency

Ship Mode is a four-week, fully in-person game development residency held in Vung Tau, a beach city near Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. As of its second season (IOS2), it accepts 10 indie teams per cohort. Housing and food are covered. There is no participation fee. A refundable $250 deposit is required to hold a spot and ensure participants follow through on the milestones they set at the start of the program.

The program runs under a clear selection philosophy: passion over pedigree, shipping over pitching, and treating Solana as a tool in service of the game rather than the point of it. Teams that treat blockchain as a prerequisite for fun are filtered out by design.

At the end of each cohort, participants put their game on stage for a live showcase. There are no slide decks. Residents play the game in person while a livestream runs. It is a deliberate accountability mechanism — the goal is a working, playable product, not a demo reel.

Why Solana Mobile

The choice of distribution platform is central to the initiative's pitch. Solana's dApp Store charges 0% commission on sales and in-app purchases. Apple and Google charge between 15% and 30%. For an indie studio with thin margins, that difference is material.

The Seeker phone has a built-in wallet, which allows game developers to integrate on-chain features — item ownership, token rewards, achievement verification — without requiring players to install or configure external wallets. That reduces onboarding friction, though Indies on Solana explicitly de-emphasizes blockchain as a selling point to players.

Participants also receive access to over 100,000 Solana Seeker users for playtesting, and the program arranges for each team to leave with a Seeker device.

Four Guiding Principles

The initiative operates under a stated set of values that distinguish it from typical crypto-gaming projects:

  1. Excellent without web3. Games must stand on their own as fun, well-designed experiences. Blockchain features may enhance the game, but the game cannot depend on them to be playable or enjoyable.
  2. Player experience first. The player's enjoyment takes priority over tokenomics, revenue design, or ecosystem integration.
  3. Long-term sustainability. The program explicitly selects against quick-profit projects and favors creators committed to building durable games.
  4. Open knowledge-sharing. Participants are expected to collaborate, share learnings, and contribute to the broader indie community on Solana, not compete behind closed doors.

These principles reflect a reaction to patterns common in crypto gaming: speculative tokens bolted onto shallow mechanics, games designed to extract value from players rather than deliver it, and projects that disappear after a funding round.

Hackathons and Community Programs

Beyond the residency, Indies on Solana has organized broader community programs.

The Underdog Hackathon is a global competition powered by VORLD's Airdrop Arcade APIs, asking developers to build real-time interactive games where live audiences can join or influence the action. The hackathon attracted over 50 project submissions. Partners included GameShyft, MagicBlocks, the Solana Foundation, and SuperTeamVN.

The initiative also sponsored a track in the Cypherpunk Hackathon on Superteam Earn, focused on real-time interactive games on Solana. That track drew 55 submissions and distributed 10,000 USDC in prizes: 5,000 USDC for first place, 3,000 for second, and two 1,000 USDC awards for third and fourth. Winners were announced in November 2025.

Both programs expand the reach of Indies on Solana beyond the residency format, creating entry points for developers who cannot commit to a month-long in-person program but want to build in the same direction.

Team and Funding

The initiative has no publicly disclosed institutional funding or venture backing. BK and Zang founded it from their position as practicing indie developers, and the program is structured to be lean. With housing costs based in Vietnam rather than a major tech hub, the per-participant cost is significantly lower than a comparable Western accelerator. The Solana Foundation is listed as a supporting partner for the Underdog Hackathon.

There is no native token. Indies on Solana does not issue governance tokens or participation rewards. The value proposition is access to infrastructure, mentorship, and a motivated peer cohort — not financial instruments.

Ecosystem Fit

Indies on Solana addresses a specific gap in the Solana ecosystem. The network has strong DeFi and NFT tooling, but gaming adoption has been slower than early projections. The Seeker phone represents Solana's clearest bet on consumer mobile distribution, and attracting quality game developers to that platform requires more than grant programs. It requires developers who understand both game design and on-chain mechanics, and who can build products that appeal to general consumers rather than crypto-native audiences.

The residency model is an attempt to produce that kind of developer. By selecting for commitment, providing sustained mentorship, and enforcing the discipline of a working demo at the end, the program is structured to generate games that could plausibly succeed in a real app store — not just in a hackathon context.

As of August 2026, the account remains active on X, participating in Solana ecosystem events including Ecosystem Calls and community builder programs.
