About

Portals

Portals is a browser-based social metaverse and gaming platform built on Solana. It lets anyone explore shared virtual spaces, build and customize their own rooms, play mini-games, and display NFTs — all without downloading software. The platform is designed to solve the accessibility problem that dogged earlier metaverse projects: high hardware requirements, confusing clients, and empty spaces. By running entirely in a web browser, Portals makes the virtual world as easy to enter as a website.

Core Mechanism

The platform is organized around a Downtown district — a curated central hub analogous to a city center. Landowners build custom spaces branching off from Downtown, while non-owners can visit, rent pre-built Pods, or hold Citizen Cards to access the core experience. This top-down city planning model contrasts with the sprawling, often deserted grids of competitors like Decentraland; Portals concentrates activity so that new users arrive somewhere worth being.

Access and ownership rights are defined by three NFT tiers. Vision cards (75 supply) grant the largest plots; Onyx cards (425 supply) offer medium plots; and Ivory cards (4,500 supply) grant the smallest. All three tiers were minted at 1.5 SOL in November 2021 and trade on secondary markets including Magic Eden. A separate class of Citizen Cards — Genesis (10,000 supply) and Standard (35,000+ in circulation) — extends access without land ownership, providing Downtown entry, space rental rights, and event priority. Non-card holders can still visit spaces as guests when invited by an owner.

Key Features

Portals ships a click-and-drag room editor that lets owners arrange furniture sets and display NFTs in 3D. Rooms function as both social spaces and galleries, with voice chat, text chat, and camera mode for screenshots. Avatars are built using ReadyPlayerMe and support VRChat-compatible 3D formats, giving users a persistent identity across spaces.

The platform includes an arcade layer of browser-playable mini-games embedded throughout the world. Portals also introduced a Tamagotchi-style NFT pet system that requires regular check-ins to maintain. Following a major 2025 platform overhaul, these features were extended with an expanded game library, a collectibles shop for cosmetic and functional items, and a creator marketplace where users can publish and sell community-generated content. The overhaul shipped more than 200 additional infrastructure improvements beyond those headline additions.

A no-code toolset positions Portals toward the Roblox model: users can launch tokens, AI agents, and games directly on the platform without writing code. The Portals Foundation is developing a decentralized asset exchange for interoperable game-native primitives, broadening the scope beyond a single virtual world.

Supported Assets

Portals displays NFTs from both Solana and Ethereum, supporting the multi-chain display of digital collectibles within owned spaces. There is no native governance token for the room-and-land layer; that system operates through NFT ownership and on-chain SOL transactions.

In September 2025, Portals launched its $PORTALS utility token via a Token Generation Event. The presale raised 3,700 SOL at a $90 million valuation and sold out in 11 seconds. Token holders receive exclusive access to upcoming token drops from projects launching through the platform. The TGE marked a shift from a pure NFT-access model toward a broader creator-economy token layer.

Security and Audits

No third-party smart contract audits are documented in available public sources. The project has not disclosed formal audit reports covering its NFT contracts or token mechanisms.

Team and History

Portals was founded in early 2021 by a team that saw no compelling, accessible metaverse emerging on the web. The three co-founders brought backgrounds from enterprise software and community building.

CEO Adam Gomez has 15 years of experience in technical product development and gaming software. Before Portals, he co-founded a studio that built experiences for clients including Disney, Blizzard, Riot Games, and Microsoft. Co-founder Wakawakajaq contributes 10 years of operations and AR/VR product experience from the same studio background. The third co-founder, known publicly as chlchlchl (Chris), handles communications and partnerships; he spent 15 years in community building and founded an NGO that grew to more than 80 chapters.

The team placed second in the gaming track at the Ignition Solana Hackathon in late 2021, then launched its NFT mint on November 26, 2021, with 5,000 cards selling at 1.5 SOL each. In February 2022, Greylock led a $5 million seed round. Additional investors included Solana Ventures, Multicoin Capital, Foundation Capital, and Justin Kan (co-founder of Twitch). Alameda Research was also an early backer; that relationship became historical context following the FTX collapse in November 2022.

By 2025 the platform reported annual revenue growth of 400% year-over-year. Its NFT collection reached the second-largest market cap among all collections on Solana, with individual whale purchases topping $1 million near the $PORTALS token launch.

A tweet from July 2026 teased squad gameplay as an upcoming feature, suggesting continued active development.

Solana Ecosystem Fit

Portals is one of the longest-running consumer applications on Solana and one of the few that has sustained a user base through multiple market cycles. Its architecture avoids heavy on-chain computation — the social and spatial layer runs off-chain in the browser, with Solana used for ownership verification, NFT display, and transactions. This keeps interaction costs low and latency manageable.

The platform integrates with Magic Eden for NFT trading, ReadyPlayerMe for cross-platform avatars, and Audius for music. It accepts Ethereum NFTs for display inside spaces, broadening its appeal beyond the Solana-native collector base. As it moves into token-gated creator publishing and no-code game deployment, Portals positions itself as infrastructure for Solana's gaming and consumer economy rather than a single destination.
