Espresso Cash

Espresso Cash is an open-source self-custody wallet for Solana that began as a mobile application focused on stablecoin payments and has since evolved into an AI-native wallet platform targeting everyday DeFi users. The project was founded in May 2021, initially operating under the name Crypto Please before rebranding to Espresso Cash in October 2022. The application is built with Flutter and Dart, enabling a single codebase to serve Android and iOS users.

Origins and Early Product

The core insight behind Espresso Cash was that cross-border money transfers represent a natural product-market fit for crypto. Rather than positioning the wallet as a speculative asset manager, the original product focused on the practical problem of sending money internationally without the friction of traditional remittance services.

The application launched on Android and iOS in November 2022. A distinguishing early feature was the ability to send USDC via a secure payment link, meaning recipients did not need to have Espresso Cash installed to receive funds. Transfers settled on Solana, which offered low fees and fast finality relative to other blockchains. The wallet is self-custody: users hold their own keys and the team provided educational material on secret recovery phrases as part of the onboarding flow.

Onboarding was designed for speed, with account creation achievable in under 20 seconds according to the team. The app partnered with Ramp Network to enable fiat on-ramps and off-ramps, giving users the ability to convert between local currency and USDC within the app.

Geographic Expansion

In January 2024, Espresso Cash announced availability in three supported regions: the United States, Europe, and Nigeria. The expansion added cash-out functionality, enabling users to receive funds in their local currency — dollars, euros, or naira — by converting USDC at the time of withdrawal. The partnership with Ramp Network underpinned the fiat rails that made this possible. The Nigeria corridor in particular reflected the team's thesis that crypto payments are most valuable where traditional financial infrastructure is costly, slow, or inaccessible.

Technical Architecture

The codebase is publicly available at github.com/brij-digital/espresso-cash-public and is licensed as open source. The repository contains several packages beyond the main application:

• solana: A Dart library implementing Solana's transaction codec and JSON RPC API
• borsh and borsh_annotation: Serialization tools implementing the Borsh binary format for Dart, used in Solana program data encoding
• solana_mobile_wallet and solana_mobile_client: Reference implementations of the Solana Mobile Wallet Adapter specification
• solana_seed_vault: A Flutter integration of the Solana Seed Vault SDK

As of mid-2025, the repository had accumulated over 1,745 commits and 302 stars with 128 forks, reflecting use of the open-source packages beyond the wallet application itself. The original GitHub organization (github.com/espresso-cash) was archived in January 2026 when the codebase migrated to the brij-digital organization. The team behind Espresso Cash also develops brij.fi, which they describe as an agent layer for Solana providing smart wallet infrastructure, on-ramps, and pay-per-call API access for autonomous software agents.

Current Product Direction

The current Espresso Cash website presents a substantially evolved product compared to the original stablecoin transfer application. The team is positioning the wallet as an AI-native wallet operating system on Solana, targeting users who want to manage DeFi activity through natural language rather than manual transaction construction.

Described features of the new product direction include:

• AI-powered transaction planning: The system compares options, estimates fees and slippage, and explains trade-offs before a user approves a transaction.
• Plain-language multi-action management: Users can initiate swaps, farming, staking, and portfolio rebalancing by describing what they want to do rather than navigating individual protocol interfaces.
• Gmail login and passkey approvals: The authentication model moves away from seed phrases toward familiar web authentication, with transaction signing handled via passkeys.
• Cross-device synchronization: Wallet state syncs across desktop, mobile, and tablet without manual backup.
• Plugin system: The wallet architecture supports extensibility, allowing theme, layout, and feature customization.
• Built-in transaction simulation: Before any transaction is approved, the system simulates it to flag unexpected outcomes.
• Zero swap fees: The team advertises permanent zero-fee swaps within the wallet.

This version of the product is in early access beta, with new users joining via a Telegram waitlist. The team has also produced a community-oriented animated series called Rebel Crown as part of its engagement efforts. The product remains 100% open source.

Positioning and Scope

Espresso Cash occupies the intersection of consumer payments and DeFi tooling on Solana. The original product demonstrated a real use case in stablecoin remittances and cross-border transfers; the current product direction extends that foundation toward a broader DeFi management interface augmented by AI. The team's parallel work on brij.fi — providing agentic payment and wallet infrastructure — suggests the long-term vision extends to software agents operating autonomously on Solana using the same primitives the wallet is built on.

The wallet has been available on Android and iOS since late 2022 and remains in active development. The open-source libraries in the espresso-cash-public repository, including the Solana Dart SDK and Solana Mobile Wallet Adapter implementations, have seen adoption beyond the Espresso Cash application itself, contributing to the broader Solana developer ecosystem.
