CTRL

CTRL Wallet was a non-custodial, multi-chain cryptocurrency wallet built to let users manage digital assets across more than 2,500 blockchains from a single interface. Founded in 2020 under the name XDEFI, the product rebranded to CTRL in mid-2024 before permanently shutting down on August 3, 2026, following a security exploit and the collapse of its planned successor product.

What It Was

The core pitch of CTRL — and its predecessor XDEFI — was consolidation: instead of maintaining separate wallets for different ecosystems, users could hold, send, receive, swap, and track assets across Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Cardano, THORChain, Cosmos, Avalanche, Polygon, BNB Smart Chain, Tron, Dogecoin, and hundreds of other chains, all from a single browser extension or mobile app. At peak the wallet reported more than 650,000 monthly active users.

CTRL was non-custodial throughout its history. Users held their own seed phrases and private keys, meaning CTRL never had custody of funds. The wallet supported both 12-word and 24-word recovery phrases and was compatible with Ledger and Trezor hardware wallets.

How It Worked

The wallet operated as a browser extension for Chrome and as iOS and Android mobile applications. On-chain interactions worked the same way as most non-custodial wallets: users imported or generated a seed phrase locally, the wallet derived private keys per chain, and transactions were signed client-side before being broadcast.

A notable technical feature introduced during the CTRL rebrand was gas abstraction: users could pay transaction fees across supported chains using USDC or the native XDEFI/CTRL token, rather than holding each chain's native gas asset.

The Rebrand: XDEFI to CTRL

The rebrand from XDEFI to CTRL was announced on July 17, 2024. The native token migrated from $XDEFI to $CTRL at a 1:1 ratio in August 2024.

Emurgo Acquisition and SecondFi

On April 29, 2026, CTRL announced it had come under the Emurgo umbrella — Emurgo being one of the founding entities of the Cardano blockchain. CTRL's multi-chain technology was to be folded into a new product called SecondFi.

The transition never completed. On June 24, 2026, a vulnerability in SecondFi was exploited, draining approximately 16 million ADA (roughly $2.4 million) from users. The day prior, on June 23, CTRL had reported a separate security incident affecting some Cardano wallets in its own product.

Shutdown

On July 7, 2026, CTRL announced it would permanently close. Starting August 3, 2026, all core wallet functions were disabled. The company explicitly stated there would be no migration token, no token swap, and no airdrop tied to the closure.

Users whose assets remained in CTRL after the August 3 cutoff can still recover funds by importing their 12- or 24-word recovery phrase into a compatible wallet such as MetaMask, Trust Wallet, or Phantom.

Solana Support

Solana was among the blockchains CTRL supported throughout its life. Users could manage SOL and SPL tokens, connect to Solana dApps, and view Solana NFTs. CTRL's gas abstraction feature also covered Solana. Following the shutdown, Solana users can migrate seed phrases to Phantom or any other Solana-compatible wallet.

Status

CTRL Wallet is permanently closed as of August 3, 2026. The project no longer accepts new users, processes transactions, or provides wallet functionality beyond recovery phrase export. The associated token ($CTRL, formerly $XDEFI) may still trade on secondary markets but the issuing project has ceased operations.
