Blockasset

Blockasset is a Solana-originated sports ecosystem that began as an athlete-verified NFT marketplace in 2021 and has since evolved into a broader Web3 sports betting and gaming network centered on its $BLOCK utility token and the BlockBet sportsbook and casino.

From Athlete NFTs to a GambleFi Network

Blockasset launched in July 2021 with a clear premise: give fans authenticated digital ownership of athlete content and experiences, built on Solana's fast, low-cost infrastructure. The platform used Metaplex to mint athlete-verified NFTs across three tiers — Legends (authenticated collectibles with exclusive real-world perks), Moments (career highlight NFTs created with a quality-over-quantity approach), and Gaming (assets powering play-to-earn sports games). Funds from NFT sales flowed directly to athlete wallets via Phantom integration, and physical-world benefits such as meet-and-greets, signed merchandise, training sessions, and event tickets were embedded in the underlying smart contracts.

At launch, the roster included more than 40 verified athletes: soccer stars Wayne Rooney, Giorgio Chiellini, and David Trezeguet; NHL legend Alex Ovechkin; rugby icon Jonah Lomu; UFC fighters Jorge Masvidal, Darren Till, and Leon Edwards; and boxer Terence Crawford. The platform billed itself as the only sports NFT marketplace catering to athletes across all sports disciplines.

The $BLOCK Token

The $BLOCK token launched on December 9, 2021 through simultaneous IDOs on Solanium and DAO Maker, establishing the project's initial token generation event. The token was designed from the outset as the ecosystem's primary utility asset. Original stated utilities included staking for NFT rewards and fee discounts, governance voting on platform decisions and NFT creation, and yield farming to earn a secondary $nBLOCK token.

As Blockasset pivoted toward sports betting, $BLOCK's role shifted with it. The token now functions as the core wagering incentive on BlockBet: players who wager with $BLOCK receive 20% cashback on their bets. A portion of BlockBet's net gaming revenue is directed toward automated buyback-and-burn of $BLOCK, creating a deflationary loop tied to platform activity. Token holders can stake $BLOCK for rewards and retain governance rights. The total supply stands at 320 million tokens, with approximately 312 million currently in circulation.

Expansion and Pivot

In March 2023, Blockasset announced an equity investment from Chiliz Labs, the $50 million incubator backed by Jump Crypto and operated by sports blockchain firm Chiliz. The deal came with an expansion of Blockasset's NFT infrastructure onto Chiliz Chain 2.0, an EVM-compatible Layer-1 blockchain purpose-built for sports fan tokens. Co-founder and product manager Mike Dickens was explicit that the project was "not leaving Solana" and would take a cross-chain approach. Chiliz CEO Alexandre Dreyfus described the fit: "Blockasset's athlete-verified token approach is different yet completely complementary to our Socios.com team Fan Token model."

By 2024, the project had consolidated around a new product identity. BlockBet — a Telegram-native crypto sportsbook and casino running on Solana — became the core offering, and the main Blockasset domain (blockasset.co) now redirects to blockbet.gg. The sportsbook covers American football, soccer, basketball, tennis, and MMA with features including early payout options and parlay boosts. The casino wing offers slots from Pragmatic Play, Hacksaw Gaming, NoLimit City, and Play'n GO alongside live dealer tables and in-house proprietary games including Plinko, Crash, Mines, Dice, and Keno.

Product Suite

The current Blockasset Network operates three distinct products.

BlockBet is the flagship sportsbook and casino, accessible via both a dedicated site and Telegram bot. Players earn Store Coins from wagering activity that can be redeemed for free spins, free bets, and merchandise. The platform offers instant rakeback and weekly cashback, with enhanced rates for $BLOCK holders.

BlockPicks is the sports prediction game, accumulating more than 25,000 prediction users. BlockPicks integrates with BlockBet, allowing free-to-play prediction rewards to be deposited directly into betting balances.

BlockSport covers media content within the ecosystem, maintaining the sports community angle that defined the project's NFT-era identity.

Partnerships

In January 2025, Blockasset announced a partnership with Third Time Games, the developer behind Photo Finish LIVE — a play-to-earn virtual horse racing game on Solana with real-money simulcast wagering. The integration made BlockBet the first simulcast partner of Photo Finish LIVE, enabling users to wager on virtual races using $BLOCK, SOL, Bitcoin, Bonk, and Ethereum. Ian Millman, Blockasset's Chief Commercial Officer, framed it as "the next step in bringing great value to our $BLOCK community." Third Time Games CEO Ian Cummings described the deal as "the first step in our strategic expansion into the sports wagering market."

Team and Leadership

Co-founder Mike Dickens has served as product manager since the project's inception. Co-founder Paul Evans stepped back into the CEO role in April 2025 following the departure of Alexis Zamboglou, who resigned after roughly six months in the role and announced plans to launch a competing Web3 betting venture. The entire C-suite that Zamboglou had assembled departed alongside him. Zamboglou had joined from a role as UK and Ireland managing director at evoke, with prior senior positions at William Hill and Entain.

Solana Integration

Blockasset was built on Solana from day one specifically for the low transaction fees and throughput that made NFT minting and secondary trading viable at consumer price points. BlockBet continues to use Solana as its primary chain for $BLOCK token activity, including staking, buybacks, and burns. While the Chiliz Chain expansion added a second network for NFT settlement, Solana remains the foundation for the token economy.

Current State

As of mid-2026, Blockasset operates an active but significantly smaller footprint than at its 2021–2022 peak. The $BLOCK token trades at a fraction of its January 2022 all-time high of $0.5486, with a market capitalization under $500,000. The project reports over $50 million wagered across its platform and more than $190,000 in $BLOCK buybacks executed. The Twitter account remains active, primarily amplifying BlockBet content. The original athlete NFT marketplace has been superseded by the betting and prediction products, representing a substantial departure from the project's founding mission of athlete-fan digital ownership, though the sports community focus and Solana infrastructure remain consistent threads through the evolution.
