BetDEX
BetDEX is the world's first licensed and regulated sports betting exchange built on the Solana blockchain — a non-custodial, peer-to-peer platform where bettors trade directly against one another, with no house edge and no discrimination against winners.
What BetDEX Is
Traditional sportsbooks set their own odds and routinely limit or ban accounts that consistently win. BetDEX is structured like a financial exchange: bettors post orders, and the platform matches back orders (bets that an outcome will happen) against lay orders (bets that it will not). The result is a marketplace where prices emerge from supply and demand, winners are never penalised, and BetDEX itself never controls user funds.
The exchange launched its open beta on Solana mainnet on November 24, 2022, with initial coverage of 2022 FIFA World Cup matches. After an extended beta period, BetDEX announced its full public exchange launch on May 30, 2024. At that point the platform offered markets across more than 100 sports leagues worldwide and was available in over 100 countries across Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa.
How It Works
BetDEX is built on the Monaco Protocol, a permissionless, open-source decentralised protocol on Solana that provides the order-matching infrastructure for prediction and betting markets. The protocol handles order matching on-chain, making every wager transparent and publicly auditable. Because BetDEX never takes the other side of a bet, it has no incentive to limit winning accounts.
Bettors interact through two order types:
- Back orders — a bet that a chosen outcome will occur, equivalent to a traditional wager.
- Lay orders — a bet that a chosen outcome will not occur, allowing users to act as the bookmaker against other participants.
Orders are matched using a first-in, first-out (FIFO) system that prioritises the best available odds. On two-outcome markets, BetDEX applies cross-matching: backing one team at a given price automatically creates a lay opportunity on the opposing team at the equivalent odds, tightening spreads and improving liquidity efficiency.
The platform's account currency is USDC. Deposits are accepted in Bitcoin, Solana (SOL), USDC, USDT, and Ethereum; all balances are automatically converted to USDC for settlement. Withdrawals to USDC via the Solana SPL network carry no fee. BetDEX never holds funds in a centralised account — all balances and wagers are secured through transparent, audited smart contracts on Solana.
Key Features
No restrictions on winning bettors. BetDEX charges a flat 1% commission on net profits per market. There are no premium charges, no stake limits, and no account suspension for consistent winners — a structural departure from how most traditional sportsbooks operate.
Competitive and transparent pricing. Because odds are set by market participants rather than a trading desk, the exchange routinely offers tighter prices than fixed-odds sportsbooks. Order books are public and matching is transparent, with no front-running.
Broad market coverage. BetDEX covers football, American football, baseball, basketball, cricket, tennis, MMA, esports, boxing, rugby, hockey, darts, snooker, and additional sports across major and minor leagues globally — more than 100 leagues in total.
Programmatic access. The exchange provides a RESTful API and a WebSocket streaming API so professional bettors and developers can read market data, receive live price updates, and place orders programmatically. Both production and sandbox environments are available, with rate limits of 500 requests per second.
Responsible gambling tools. BetDEX includes self-exclusion, time-out controls, customisable stake limits, and enhanced KYC verification for users who want additional safeguards.
Regulation and Licensing
BetDEX became the first fully licensed and regulated sports betting exchange on a public blockchain when it received approval from the Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission (GSC) under the Online Gambling Regulation Act (OGRA) in November 2022. The licence covers all forms of online gambling and gaming, including online sports betting.
This regulatory footing distinguishes BetDEX from most DeFi-adjacent betting products, which operate in legal grey zones. Obtaining a formal gambling licence while running on a public blockchain requires BetDEX to enforce KYC and geo-restrictions — a tradeoff that limits access for some users but enables the platform to operate openly in regulated markets and pitch directly to professional bettors who cannot use unregulated alternatives.
Team and Funding
BetDEX was founded in 2021 by three former FanDuel executives:
- Varun Sudhakar — CEO and Co-Founder
- Stuart Tonner — CTO and Co-Founder
- Nigel Eccles — Chairman (former CEO of FanDuel)
The Edinburgh-based team also draws on veterans from Betfair, BetDAQ, and BoyleSports. The company raised a $21 million seed round in 2021. Disclosed investors include Paradigm, Multicoin Capital, and Lightspeed Venture Partners.
Solana Fit
Sports betting exchanges require the same infrastructure properties as financial exchanges: fast settlement, high throughput, and minimal per-transaction cost. Solana's sub-second finality and negligible transaction fees make it a natural fit for a matching engine that processes thousands of orders across live events simultaneously. The Monaco Protocol leverages these properties to provide a shared, composable liquidity layer — BetDEX is the first major consumer application on that protocol, but the architecture is open to third-party developers and other operators who want to build on the same on-chain order book.
USDC-denominated settlement keeps bettors out of speculative token positions. There is no native BetDEX token; the platform's value proposition centres on exchange mechanics, regulatory standing, and fair treatment of winning bettors rather than on a governance or utility token.
Summary
BetDEX sits at the intersection of regulated gambling and decentralised infrastructure. By running a licensed, peer-to-peer betting exchange on Solana — with auditable smart contracts, non-custodial fund management, and no stake limits — it targets professional and recreational bettors who have been limited or banned by traditional sportsbooks. Its combination of regulatory credibility, transparent on-chain matching, and low commission makes it one of the most structurally differentiated sports betting products in the Solana ecosystem.
