Switchboard

Switchboard was a permissionless oracle network built primarily on Solana that branded itself "The Everything Oracle." After five years of operation and a $7.5 million Series A raise, the project announced on September 19, 2026 that it would cease all operations on September 25, 2026. Protocols relying on Switchboard feeds must migrate immediately.

What Switchboard Did

Launched in 2021, Switchboard positioned itself as the most flexible oracle infrastructure available on Solana. While competitors like Pyth focused on institutional-grade price feeds pushed by first-party data providers, Switchboard built around a different philosophy: anyone should be able to create an oracle feed for anything, without needing permission from a central committee.

Its architecture rested on two pillars. First, on-demand feeds that only activate when queried—eliminating the cost and latency overhead of continuously streaming prices that nobody is reading. Second, Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) that prevent node operators from viewing, altering, or front-running the data they process. The combination meant protocols could pull in price data, custom API responses, or off-chain computations with strong security guarantees and without paying for idle bandwidth.

By 2026, the network had expanded to over ten blockchains and was processing hundreds of millions of requests per week. On Solana specifically, the project counted 3 million+ oracle updates on-chain in 2026 alone, across 550+ unique feeds and 53 active programs. At its peak, the network secured over $5 billion in total value locked across DeFi protocols depending on its price data.

Technical Architecture

Switchboard offered two tiers of oracle speed. Its standard oracles updated at roughly 400-millisecond intervals, suitable for most lending and derivatives protocols. For applications requiring near-real-time data—particularly perpetuals and high-frequency DeFi—Switchboard's Surge oracles delivered updates in 2–5 milliseconds, among the fastest latencies available in the oracle market.

The permissionless feed model was Switchboard's genuine technical differentiation. Any developer could deploy a custom feed pointing to any on-chain or off-chain data source, configure aggregation logic, and set their own update conditions without approval from a governance body or core team. This made Switchboard the go-to choice for protocols needing data types that Pyth or Chainlink didn't support natively—NFT floor prices, sports results, custom API endpoints, or any arbitrary computation that could run inside a TEE.

Recent Milestones Before Shutdown

In May 2024, Switchboard Technology Labs Inc. raised $7.5 million in Series A funding to accelerate multi-chain expansion and deepen Solana integrations.

In April 2025, Switchboard became the first oracle network on Solana to integrate with Jito's restaking platform. Its Oracle NCN (Node Consensus Network) operated through Jito infrastructure, with node operators securing their positions via restaked collateral including $SWTCH and $JitoSOL—a move designed to strengthen the cryptoeconomic security of oracle nodes.

On September 9, 2025, Switchboard launched its native token $SWTCH alongside a community airdrop for early supporters. The token introduced governance rights, staking rewards via svSWTCH, and protocol incentive structures. Core team and initial contributor allocations carried a six-month cliff with vesting beginning March 2026.

In July 2025, Switchboard signed a letter of intent with DeFi Development Corp. to build oracle infrastructure supporting real-world asset (RWA) data feeds on Solana—part of the broader ecosystem push into tokenized assets.

Shutdown: What Happened

The wind-down began quietly. In late August 2026, Switchboard halted operations on its Move-based chain integrations—Aptos, Sui, IOTA, and Movement—causing disruptions for protocols on those networks before migrations could be completed.

On September 19, 2026, Switchboard Technology Labs Inc. published a formal closure announcement. The team cited several converging structural pressures: AI tools have dramatically lowered the cost of building bespoke oracle solutions, removing the economics that justified a shared oracle network for many smaller protocols; an extended bear market compressed project budgets industrywide; and recent security exploits across the oracle sector eroded user confidence. Contributors and node operators had already departed as conditions deteriorated, making continued operation untenable.

Services across all remaining chains—including Solana—terminate September 25, 2026. The team recommended Pyth and RedStone as migration targets for affected protocols.

Legacy

Switchboard's closure leaves Pyth as the dominant oracle infrastructure provider on Solana, with RedStone as an alternative for protocols wanting push-based or customizable feeds. The permissionless feed model—allowing any protocol to spin up custom data feeds without gatekeeping—was Switchboard's most distinctive contribution to the ecosystem, and the approach influenced how subsequent oracle designs thought about access control and data diversity.
