Switchboard

Switchboard is a permissionless, multi-chain oracle network that uses hardware-level Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) to deliver fast, manipulation-resistant data feeds and verifiable randomness to DeFi applications, with Solana as its primary deployment and performance benchmark.

The Oracle Problem Switchboard Solves

Most oracle networks publish price data continuously in a push model, requiring constant on-chain updates regardless of whether any protocol needs the data at a given moment. This wastes transaction capacity, incurs persistent fees, and introduces latency between the real-world event and the on-chain record. Switchboard flips this model: its on-demand architecture creates and settles oracle data only when a consumer requests it, pulling from source at the moment of need rather than maintaining a treadmill of scheduled updates.

The permissionless design extends this further. Any developer can deploy a custom data feed sourcing from any endpoint, including traditional financial APIs, DeFi price aggregators, off-chain computation, or other smart contracts, without waiting for Switchboard operators to whitelist or configure the feed. This flexibility makes Switchboard suitable for assets and data types that traditional oracle networks cannot serve.

How It Works: TEEs and On-Demand Feeds

The technical foundation is Trusted Execution Environments: isolated hardware enclaves (Intel SGX, AMD SEV) inside the oracle operator's machine where code executes without even the operator being able to read or alter what is running. Switchboard oracle nodes run only authenticated Switchboard code inside these enclaves, producing cryptographic attestations that prove to any verifier, including the on-chain program, that the correct, unmodified logic produced the reported value. Data integrity does not depend on operator honesty; it is enforced by hardware.

On-chain settlement follows a two-instruction pattern. The oracle first submits an Ed25519 signature verification, then posts the attested quote into the Switchboard program account. The feed account address is derived deterministically from the feed ID, so consumers never need to manage account lookups manually.

Speed is tiered. Switchboard Surge, the highest-performance offering, delivers sub-100ms latency by streaming price data directly from sources over WebSocket connections through dedicated gateways, bypassing traditional consensus delays. The standard tier operates around 400ms. Surge access is gated by svSWTCH token holdings, creating a direct link between the protocol's economic layer and premium infrastructure access.

Verifiable randomness follows a commit-reveal scheme. A user commits to a Solana slothash before the oracle generates the random value, and the oracle reveals it afterward. Because commitment precedes generation, neither the user nor the oracle can manipulate the outcome. On-chain verification confirms the randomness is fresh and was not selectively withheld.

Network Scale and Integrations

By early 2026, Switchboard's Solana deployment was recording more than three million oracle updates on-chain, serving over 550 unique feeds across 53 distinct programs. The protocol operates on more than ten blockchains, including Solana, Arbitrum, Optimism, Aptos, Sui, Core, and StarkNet, and processes hundreds of millions of data requests weekly.

Prominent Solana protocols that rely on Switchboard data include Kamino Finance, Jito, MarginFi, and Drift. In July 2025, DeFi Dev Corp. and Switchboard Technology Labs signed a Letter of Intent to build real-world asset (RWA) oracle infrastructure together, covering custom price feeds for tokenized assets and real-time proof-of-reserve attestations.

Jito Restaking Integration

Switchboard became the first oracle network to launch on Jito's restaking platform in production. Oracle node operators secure their participation by posting restaked collateral, either SWTCH or JitoSOL, into Jito's Node Consensus Network (NCN) vault. Misbehavior can be slashed, directly linking oracle reliability to real economic stakes. Already-staked SOL can simultaneously back oracle security, improving capital efficiency across the ecosystem.

SWTCH Token

Switchboard launched its native token, SWTCH (mint: SW1TCHLmRGTfW5xZknqQdpdarB8PD95sJYWpNp9TbFx), on September 9, 2025. Holders convert SWTCH into svSWTCH through the Jito NCN vault, gaining governance voting rights, a share of protocol fee revenue distributed every two to three days, the ability to delegate to oracle operators, and access to the Surge latency tier.

Token distribution: 26% ecosystem growth (four-to-six-year unlock), 25% initial contributors (six-month cliff to March 2026, then two-year vesting), 23% core development team (same schedule), 16% protocol rewards distributed continuously, and 10% launch and community allocation fully unlocked at the token generation event.

Team and Background

Switchboard was co-founded by Chris Hermida, Mitchell Gildenberg, and Alex Stewart in 2021. The project has raised $11.2 million. The Switchboard Foundation manages SWTCH governance, while Switchboard Technology Labs drives protocol development.

Solana Fit

Switchboard is purpose-built for Solana's throughput requirements. The on-demand model maps to Solana's transaction model, where the marginal cost of a single request is low enough that pulling data at the moment of use is economically viable. TEE attestations are verified efficiently on-chain via Solana's Ed25519 precompile. Sub-100ms data freshness through the Surge tier is only practical on a chain with Solana's block times. The combination of permissionless feed creation, hardware-enforced data integrity, tiered latency, and economic security through Jito restaking makes Switchboard a foundational data infrastructure layer for Solana's DeFi stack.
