On-chain activity
CoinGecko
CoinGecko provides comprehensive cryptocurrency market data through a web platform, displaying real-time prices, market capitalization, trading volume, and portfolio tracking tools. The system aggregates data from exchanges and presents analytical insights including price charts, market trends, and community metrics for digital assets.
CoinGecko
CoinGecko is the world's largest independent cryptocurrency data aggregator, providing real-time and historical market intelligence across centralized and decentralized markets — built without external venture capital influence over its data methodology.
Core Mechanism
CoinGecko aggregates market data directly from exchange APIs, applying a proprietary Bitcoin Price Index (BPI) as a reference benchmark and independently verifying assets before listing them. Unlike exchange-owned trackers, the platform is designed to be neutral: its pricing methodology is published openly, and prices are transparently sourced from multiple venues to reduce the influence of any single exchange.
The platform's data pipeline covers:
- Over 18,000 cryptocurrencies tracked across 1,500+ centralized exchanges and 600+ asset categories
- 39 million+ on-chain tokens across 200+ blockchain networks via GeckoTerminal
- 1,800+ DEXes indexed for real-time liquidity, trading volume, and price data
Key Products
CoinGecko Web Platform
The core consumer product lets users track cryptocurrency prices, market capitalizations, trading volumes, historical charts, exchange rankings, and portfolio performance. CoinGecko started in 2014 tracking just 20 coins; it now covers the majority of the global crypto asset landscape and reports more than 150 million monthly users across its surfaces.
CoinGecko API
The developer API is CoinGecko's most widely integrated product. It provides 80+ endpoints across three delivery methods: REST (standard HTTP queries), WebSocket (ultra-low-latency real-time streaming via persistent connections), and Webhook (automated HTTP callbacks triggered when coin metadata changes). Two access tiers are available — a rate-limited Demo API for free users and a Pro API for paying subscribers.
Developer tooling includes:
- TypeScript and Python SDKs
- Plugins for Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel
- A CLI built in Go with an interactive terminal UI, supporting 7-day price charts, CSV export, 50+ currency symbols, and 500+ asset categories
- AI-native integrations: MCP server, SKILL interface, and coding agent support
Paid plans extend data depth significantly. The Analyst tier ($129/month) provides full daily price history back to 2013 and hourly data from 2018 for 18,000+ coins. On-chain DEX historical data extends back to 2021 with 1-second granularity.
GeckoTerminal
GeckoTerminal is a standalone DEX analytics platform acquired by CoinGecko in 2023. It provides real-time monitoring of crypto prices, trading volume, transactions, and liquidity across 1,000+ decentralized exchanges on 200+ blockchain networks. In February 2024, GeckoTerminal's data pipeline was formally merged into the CoinGecko API, unifying on-chain DEX data with CoinGecko's broader market dataset under a single API layer. GeckoTerminal also offers embeddable chart widgets that third-party applications and websites can integrate directly into their interfaces.
Research and Reports
CoinGecko publishes quarterly and annual crypto industry reports covering market structure, sector performance, DeFi trends, and adoption metrics. Reports have been issued consistently through 2025 and into 2026, including State of Crypto Perpetuals, an RWA report, the 2025 Annual Crypto Industry Report, and the 2026 Q1 Crypto Industry Report.
Solana Integration
CoinGecko offers dedicated Solana data infrastructure. Its Solana-specific API covers approximately 1.4 million Solana tokens, providing:
- Real-time and historical token prices
- Market capitalization and trading volume
- Token metadata
- On-chain DEX pool data and OHLCV charts
- Trade-level data
GeckoTerminal tracks newly created Solana liquidity pools in real time, including pools on major Solana DEXes such as Orca and Raydium. This makes CoinGecko and GeckoTerminal a primary data layer for Solana developers building trading tools, analytics dashboards, portfolio trackers, bots, and DeFi applications that require reliable token pricing and on-chain liquidity data.
CoinGecko API data is integrated into a range of widely used applications, including MetaMask, Coinbase, Etherscan, and Statista — establishing it as a de facto reference data source across the multi-chain ecosystem.
Team and Background
CoinGecko was co-founded in April 2014 by Bobby Ong and TM Lee. TM Lee holds a Computer Science degree from Purdue University and worked as a software engineer before co-founding the platform. Bobby Ong studied Economics at University College London on a Sime Darby Foundation Scholarship. The two ran CoinGecko without additional employees for the first four years and bootstrapped the company without raising venture capital — an uncommon path in a sector dominated by VC-backed data providers. The company is headquartered in Malaysia.
In early 2026, CoinGecko was reported to be exploring a potential acquisition at a valuation of approximately $500 million, with investment bank Moelis engaged to manage the process. CEO Bobby Ong confirmed the company was evaluating "strategic opportunities." The company remained independent as of those reports.
Position in the Solana Ecosystem
CoinGecko's role in Solana — and in crypto broadly — is primarily as neutral market infrastructure. Solana developers integrating token prices, wallets displaying market caps, and researchers analyzing DeFi activity all commonly depend on CoinGecko data as a shared reference layer. Its combination of CEX market data, on-chain DEX analytics via GeckoTerminal, and a published, transparent pricing methodology has made it one of the most widely cited data sources in the industry across more than a decade of operation.
