Switchboard Oracle Protocol Shuts Down, Giving Solana DeFi Six Days to Migrate
Switchboard Technology Labs shuts down September 25. Kamino Finance, Jito, MarginFi, and Drift Protocol have six days to migrate to Pyth Network or RedStone.
Switchboard SWTCH$0.00004057-1.7% is shutting down. Switchboard Technology Labs Inc., the core developer of the Switchboard oracle network, announced on September 19 that all implementations are deprecated effective immediately, with all support services ending on September 25. Protocols relying on its price feeds, including Kamino Finance KMNO$0.035-6.8%, Jito JTO$0.514-6.9%, Marginfi LST$147.75-1.7%, and Drift Protocol DRIFT$0.019-3.1%, have six days to complete their migrations.
The shutdown covers every chain Switchboard operated on. At the time of the announcement, Switchboard was processing hundreds of millions of data requests weekly, serving 550+ unique feeds across 53 distinct programs on Solana and ten other chains.
Three Reasons Switchboard Technology Labs Is Closing
AI tooling has lowered the cost of building oracle infrastructure in-house. In the team's words, "AI has lowered the cost of building one's own oracle," eroding the pricing power that made a standalone oracle network viable as a business. As more protocols can maintain custom data feed pipelines without a vendor, the addressable market for third-party oracle services contracts.
The prolonged crypto bear market compressed the budgets and launch schedules of the new chains and DeFi protocols that drove Switchboard's customer growth. Fewer new chain launches meant less demand for the feeds and integrations that had been Switchboard's primary growth surface.
The most structurally significant factor is the emergence of direct data arrangements that bypass the oracle middleware layer entirely. The announcement cites Hyperliquid's direct data partnership with S&P as the model illustrating this shift. Large-volume data consumers with enough leverage can now negotiate directly with data providers, removing the intermediary.
Switchboard Technology Labs described the closure as coming after exhausting all alternatives, according to ChainCatcher's reporting. The company had raised $11.2 million over its lifetime, including a $7.5 million Series A in May 2024 led by Tribe Capital and RockawayX, with participation from the Solana Foundation, Aptos, and StarkWare.
Protocols Must Migrate Before September 25
The four major Solana DeFi protocols confirmed as Switchboard integrators are Kamino Finance, Jito, MarginFi, and Drift Protocol. For protocols carrying significant open interest or liquidity positions, oracle migration requires smart contract updates and testing. The six-day window is narrow.
Migrating to Pyth Network or RedStone
Switchboard's migration guidance names two replacements: Pyth Network PYTH$0.084+10.5% and RedStone. Pyth Network, governed by the PYTH, is the most widely deployed oracle on Solana and the direct alternative for most affected protocols. RedStone offers a pull-model architecture that some protocols prefer for cost efficiency across multi-chain deployments.
Pyth Network was already serving a broader set of Solana protocols before this announcement and will be the primary destination for the migration volume that begins immediately.
August 2026 Key Compromise on Aptos and Sui Was a Separate Event
On August 29, 2026, Switchboard suspended oracle services on Aptos, Sui, IOTA, and Movement networks following a suspected key compromise. Solana feeds were unaffected at that time. Today's announcement is the complete wind-down of the company, a separate decision from that incident.
What Switchboard's Exit Tells Oracle Infrastructure
Oracle networks occupy a stack position that requires continuous security maintenance, a distributed node-operator set, and enough customer volume to justify those costs. When demand compresses simultaneously from AI-enabled in-house builds, a prolonged bear market, and large customers going direct to data providers, the unit economics can deteriorate faster than a team can adapt.
Switchboard's SWTCH governance token, launched in September 2025 with fee-sharing and operator delegation design, held no mechanism to prevent the business wind-down. The three factors Switchboard named are each structural, and each applies to the broader oracle sector to varying degrees.
For Solana DeFi, the immediate question is execution: six days to migrate, with Pyth Network and RedStone as the established paths forward.
