About

Anchorage Digital

Anchorage Digital is the first federally chartered digital asset bank in the United States, offering institutional-grade crypto custody, staking, trading, financing, and settlement services to asset managers, ETF issuers, hedge funds, family offices, blockchain protocols, and government entities.

Background and Charter History

Anchorage Digital was founded in 2017 by Diogo Mónica and Nathan McCauley, engineers who previously led infrastructure security teams at Docker and Square. The company operates as Anchor Labs, Inc. (a Delaware corporation), with its banking entity, Anchorage Digital Bank, National Association, holding OCC federal bank charter number 25243 — the first and, for several years, the only federal bank charter granted to a crypto-native company.

The charter was granted by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in January 2021, placing Anchorage under direct federal banking supervision. This distinction matters for institutional clients: assets in custody at Anchorage Digital Bank sit inside a regulated federal banking entity with bankruptcy-remote protections, not merely a trust company or state-licensed custodian. The company also holds a New York BitLicense (#0000041) and operates Anchorage Digital Singapore under a Major Payment Institution license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

In 2022, the OCC issued a consent order against Anchorage Digital Bank related to deficiencies in its Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money laundering compliance program — specifically gaps in customer due diligence and suspicious activity monitoring. The bank invested tens of millions of dollars over the following three years to build BSA/AML compliance infrastructure from the ground up. In August 2025, the OCC formally lifted the consent order, resolving the matter. Anchorage has since testified multiple times before the House Financial Services Committee on crypto payments, the GENIUS Act, and AML frameworks.

Notable investors include Andreessen Horowitz, Goldman Sachs, Apollo, KKR, and Visa. Institutional clients include BlackRock, MicroStrategy, Tether, Cantor Fitzgerald, and Grayscale.

Core Mechanism: Institutional Custody

Anchorage Digital's custody architecture is built around hardware security module (HSM) cold storage with segregated asset accounts. The platform eliminates direct private key exposure for clients through biometric authorization flows that enable 24/7 global transaction approvals without manual handoffs or key retrieval from cold storage. Assets are held in segregated accounts, providing bankruptcy-remote protection under federal banking law.

Anchorage holds SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type II audited certifications from independent auditors, and has publicly outlined a post-quantum cryptography preparedness strategy. Assets in digital asset custody are not covered by FDIC or SIPC insurance, though fiat currency held by the bank flows through FDIC-insured sub-custodians.

The platform positions itself at the intersection of regulatory compliance and operational speed: a federally regulated bank that can settle assets in real time without requiring clients to pre-fund positions or move assets off-platform to participate in staking, lending, or governance.

Key Products and Services

Custody is the platform's foundation. Institutions can hold digital assets in segregated accounts at the federal bank level, participate in staking and on-chain governance without leaving custody, and access integrated fiat USD accounts and wire transfer services in the same platform.

Atlas is Anchorage Digital's settlement network, enabling real-time counterparty transactions between institutional participants. The platform has integrated Atlas with Binance and others to provide settlement solutions that remove pre-funding requirements.

Porto is Anchorage Digital's self-custody wallet product, designed for institutions that want direct blockchain access and key control but within a structured operational framework. Porto integrates with Anchorage's staking partnerships, including Marinade Finance on Solana.

Stablecoin Infrastructure: Following the passage of the GENIUS Act in mid-2025, Anchorage Digital Bank launched a regulated stablecoin issuance platform, with U.S. Bank selected to custodize the cash reserves backing its payment stablecoins. The company is also exploring "cashless" stablecoin reserve management on Solana, a model that would deploy stablecoin reserves into on-chain yield-bearing instruments rather than traditional bank accounts.

Anchorage Digital Ventures, launched in August 2025, is an early-stage investment arm focused on protocol teams, Bitcoin DeFi, and real-world asset tokenization platforms.

Agentic Banking: Through a partnership with Google Cloud announced in 2025, Anchorage Digital is building AI-powered financial infrastructure that the company describes as "the operating layer for AI and Capital."

Solana Ecosystem Integration

Anchorage Digital has made Solana a meaningful part of its institutional product roadmap, with several integrations announced across 2025–2026.

Marinade Finance Integration (2026): Anchorage Digital became the first federally chartered crypto bank approved to offer staking when it integrated Marinade Finance for institutional SOL staking. Clients can stake SOL through Marinade directly from Anchorage Digital custody or Porto without using external applications or relinquishing asset control. Two strategies are available: Marinade Select (a compliance-focused option using approximately 30 KYC-verified validators, designed for regulated financial products including ETF issuers) and Marinade Max Yield (an automated strategy that dynamically allocates across Marinade's validator network to maximize returns). The mechanism is an on-chain separation of staking authority from withdrawal authority — Marinade controls staking operations while Anchorage retains withdrawal authority and custody.

Kamino Collateral Management (2025): Anchorage Digital's Atlas Collateral Management Platform integrated with Kamino, a leading on-chain lending protocol on Solana, enabling institutional borrowers to use SOL as collateral within Kamino's lending markets without removing assets from Anchorage's segregated custody. The collateral remains in the borrower's Anchorage account under a tri-party account control agreement; automated 24/7 LTV monitoring, margin calls, and rules-based liquidations are handled by Anchorage infrastructure. This blueprint is designed to be replicable across other Solana lending protocols.

Bybit bbSOL Custody (October 2025): Anchorage Digital added institutional custody support for bbSOL, Bybit's staked SOL token, expanding the range of Solana-native liquid staking tokens available within its custody platform.

Solana Company Treasury Partnership: The Solana Company (the entity managing the Solana Foundation's strategic treasury) selected Anchorage Digital as its institutional custodian for its strategic SOL holdings.

Fit Within the Solana Ecosystem

Anchorage Digital represents regulated institutional infrastructure for Solana: a gateway that allows the largest capital pools — pension funds, ETF issuers, hedge funds, and corporate treasuries — to hold SOL, earn staking yield, and participate in on-chain lending and collateral markets without departing from a federally chartered banking environment. Its integrations with Marinade, Kamino, and Bybit's bbSOL position it as a regulated on-ramp to Solana's DeFi and liquid staking ecosystem for institutions that cannot use unregulated custody alternatives.
