Solana Testnet Achieves 250ms Slot Times Alongside 10,000 TPS Under Synthetic Load
Anza CEO Brennan Watt reports 250ms slots and 10,000 TPS at 236ms on Solana testnet under synthetic load, step four of five under SIMD-0525 toward 200ms.
Anza CEO Brennan Watt posted testnet data on August 13 showing 250ms slot times measured on Solana testnet, the fourth stage in the SIMD-0525 slot reduction schedule, which targets a final slot time of 200ms across five sequential steps. Nineteen minutes later, a second post reported 10,000 transactions per second at 236ms, both figures captured under synthetic load conditions.
250ms: Fourth of Five SIMD-0525 Feature Gates
The slot time reduction program structures the drop from 400ms to 200ms across five individually feature-gated stages: 400ms to 350ms, 300ms, 250ms, and finally 200ms. Each gate requires the prior step to hold acceptable block skip rates before the next threshold can unlock. Compass covered the 350ms testnet milestone on August 7 and 300ms on August 11; 250ms clears the fourth gate.
The underlying performance improvements enabling these reductions sit in Turbine (Solana's block propagation layer) and the Replay pipeline, per official Solana documentation. That feature-gate mechanism is unchanged between steps; each stage tests whether the accumulated validator client gains hold at a tighter timing constraint before committing the change to mainnet.
10,000 TPS Measured Alongside Slot Times, Under Synthetic Load
Watt's follow-up measurement is the first time a TPS figure has appeared alongside a slot time milestone in this testnet series. The 10,000 TPS reading came at 236ms (slightly tighter than the 250ms gate) and was taken under synthetic load, meaning generated test traffic rather than live user transactions.
That distinction matters for reading the number. Synthetic conditions let researchers push a validator set toward a throughput ceiling without the variability of real-world transaction patterns, producing a cleaner signal about what the hardware and software can sustain at a given slot time. What mainnet carries under live load at 250ms depends on actual transaction volume and mix, which synthetic runs do not replicate. Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko wrote:
One Step Remaining Before 200ms
With 250ms confirmed on testnet, one stage remains under SIMD-0525: the step from 250ms to 200ms. That gate follows the same pattern as the four that preceded it, testnet stability first, acceptable skip rates, then a stake-weighted supermajority vote on mainnet before the change activates.
Running on a separate track, Anza plans to activate the Alpenglow consensus upgrade on September 28 through Agave 4.3, per the release schedule published August 13. Alpenglow replaces Tower BFT and moves validator votes off the block ledger, a different protocol layer than the slot timing changes SIMD-0525 governs. Both are progressing through testnet and release validation at the same time.
