Solana Testnet Queues 300ms Slot Time for Monday Activation
Anza CEO Brennan Watt has queued 300ms slot times on Solana's testnet, expected to activate Monday August 10, while 350ms still targets mainnet August 17.
The 350ms slot time milestone had been stable on Solana SOL$76.27+3.8% testnet for just hours when Anza CEO Brennan Watt moved the clock forward: as of Thursday night, 300ms slot times are now pending on testnet, with activation expected by Monday, August 10.
Watt's announcement came roughly four hours after Compass covered the 350ms testnet milestone, when he confirmed eight consecutive hours of stable 350ms slots, the first SIMD-0525 phase to clear production confidence thresholds.
How SIMD-0525 Sequences Solana Slot Time Reductions
SIMD-0525 reduces Solana's slot time from 400ms to a 200ms target in four sequential feature-gated steps: 350ms, 300ms, 250ms, and 200ms. Each phase activates independently, and the SIMD specification requires a one-epoch delay between feature gate activation and the new parameters taking effect network-wide.
A built-in safety check governs progression: the network does not advance to the next phase if block skip rates are too high, requiring demonstrated network health before each step proceeds.
Queuing 300ms on testnet does not bypass that process for the 350ms phase. The mainnet deployment of 350ms remains targeted for August 17 via Agave v4.2. The testnet queue for 300ms reflects Anza running the phases in sequence as testnet confidence accrues.
What 300ms and the 200ms Final Target Mean for Throughput
The Solana Foundation's reduced slot time documentation describes the upgrade's goals as faster transaction confirmation for users and tighter spreads for market makers, with validators seeing shorter epochs and faster reward cycles.
Per the SIMD-0525 specification, per-slot computational budgets scale proportionally with each slot time reduction. Hitting 300ms on testnet by Monday would mark the second SIMD-0525 phase reaching the test environment before the first has been deployed to mainnet.
