BNB Chain has taken legal action against a former employee who allegedly retained the seed phrase of a wallet created for an internal tutorial video, then used it months after leaving the company to deploy an unauthorized meme token. Because the wallet address was originally associated with BNB Chain's official content, the token launch created the false impression of organizational backing — a perception that carries real market value in crypto. BNB Chain stated clearly that it "did not create, authorize, promote or participate in the creation of this token," and confirmed that both lawyers and police are now involved. BNB co-founder Changpeng Zhao described the former employee as "basically a scammer."

The case raises novel questions about how existing law — theft, breach of contract, unauthorized computer access — applies to retained seed phrases, an area courts have barely tested. For BNB Chain, the lawsuit signals that the organization is willing to pursue IP and access-control claims even when on-chain assets are involved, setting a potential precedent for how blockchain projects handle employee offboarding, wallet custody, and governance of addresses used in official communications.
