However, we've now hit a wall where demand is outpacing the grid's capacity to deliver. ... When everyone uses energy at the same time, the grid becomes congested, similar to rush hour traffic.

About

The Grid

The Grid is a Web3 ecosystem intelligence platform that standardizes and verifies metadata about blockchain projects, products, and assets — filling the discoverability gap between on-chain data and the real-world information users need to understand what a project actually is and does.

The Problem: Discoverability in Web3 Is Broken

Price feeds tell you what something costs. On-chain data shows what happened. Neither answers the most fundamental question: what is this thing? Wallets, block explorers, DEX aggregators, and ecosystem dashboards typically rely on fragmented, inconsistent information spread across disconnected tools, Twitter lists, and manually maintained spreadsheets. Each platform invents its own taxonomy, leaving users and builders navigating the same ecosystem through different maps that rarely agree.

The Grid's founding thesis — articulated by co-founder Jonathan Knegtel using a Google Maps analogy — is that Web3 needs a neutral, standardized metadata layer sitting between projects and the platforms that surface them to users. "Think of this as an evolution rather than a revolution," Knegtel has said. "Currently you arrive in the Web3 city and its logos and lights are everywhere, but little else. The Grid will pull in more information on those offerings. A bit like how Google Maps gives you information about the services populated there, rather than just a name."

Core Mechanism: The Grid Standard

The Grid Standard (TGS) organizes Web3 data into four structured components:

  • Profile: the problem a project addresses
  • Products: what they built and where it is deployed
  • Assets: issued tokens and their usage patterns
  • Entities: the organization behind the project

Every record passes through double validation. Large language models handle initial data collection and cleaning; human reviewers then apply a Four Eyes principle requiring two independent sets of eyes before a record is published. This hybrid approach keeps the dataset machine-scalable while maintaining a level of accuracy that purely automated pipelines cannot guarantee. The platform positions this against the growing volume of unreliable AI-generated content in crypto: "In an age where there is more and more untrustworthy AI information, what The Grid offers is a premium service which delivers reliability."

The schema is versioned. TGS11, released in April 2026, added country support metadata and GridRank refinements, giving downstream integrators a stable, upgradeable standard to build against.

Key Products and Features

Discovery platform (thegrid.id): An indexed Web3 directory covering more than 3,600 profiles, filterable by blockchain, sector, product type, tags, and asset standards. A GridRank system orders results by quality and relevance signals.

Solana Explorer (solana.thegrid.id): A dedicated discovery surface for the Solana ecosystem tracking 1,600-plus companies and projects as of 2026, making it one of the largest structured off-chain datasets for the network.

Data Explorer (explorer.thegrid.id): An open-source (MIT-licensed) reference implementation built on The Grid's GraphQL API, designed as a developer demonstration of what can be built with the dataset. The team notes it is a beta tool rather than a production daily driver.

GraphQL API: Free public access to The Grid's validated dataset, enabling wallets, block explorers, exchanges, and dashboards to embed standardized project metadata without building their own collection and verification infrastructure.

Grid MCP (launched April 2026): A Model Context Protocol server that allows AI agents to query The Grid's structured data using natural language, enabling agent workflows that require reliable, human-verified information about Web3 projects and their relationships.

Open Data Release (January 2026): Selected ecosystem datasets made freely available for download, supporting researchers and ecosystem operators who need bulk access rather than API queries.

Solana Ecosystem Fit

Solana was The Grid's first major integration target. As of a May 2025 ecosystem snapshot, The Grid was tracking 478 companies, 261 projects, and 31 DAOs building on Solana, with 1,015 live products documented across the network. Finance and Infrastructure were the two largest sectors by profile count, while Developer Tooling led in individual product count, followed by DePIN, wallets, and DEX platforms. The snapshot documented 223 utility tokens, 98 NFTs, 60 governance tokens, and 27 liquid staking tokens.

Orca, Solana's liquidity layer, now classifies assets using The Grid's open data — a live example of the "write once, read everywhere" distribution model in practice. The Solana-tagged directory on The Grid listed 1,648-plus companies as of 2026, representing one of the platform's deepest vertical datasets.

Partnerships and Adoption

The Grid has integrations or data partnerships with Orca, Codex, Stablecoin Insider, Proof of Talk, Stablecoin Standard, Tether, and Bluechip, spanning DEX aggregators, stablecoin analytics, and institutional data platforms. The platform is used by ecosystem operators for data-driven decision-making and ROI measurement across the Web3 landscape.

Team and Background

The project was developed over seven years before its public beta launch, with Jonathan Knegtel as co-founder. The company completed a 600,000 euro angel round to fund its initial launch phase, which centered on the Solana ecosystem before expanding to broader multi-chain coverage.

Data Integrity and Access Model

The Grid does not operate smart contracts or custody user funds. Its security posture centers entirely on data accuracy: the double-validation methodology combining AI-assisted processing with human review is the primary quality mechanism. The Data Explorer reference implementation is open source under the MIT license, allowing developers to inspect how queries are structured and data is served. The GraphQL API is free and public, positioning The Grid as infrastructure rather than a subscription service for the projects and platforms that depend on it.
