Solscan

[[PROJECT:765]] launched in 2021 as a purpose-built block explorer for Solana, filling a gap the chain's official explorer left open: a comprehensive, developer-friendly interface for reading on-chain data at depth. Within a few years it became the most widely used Solana explorer, integrated across wallets, DeFi protocols, NFT platforms, and internal analytics workflows throughout the ecosystem. On January 3, 2024, Etherscan — the dominant Ethereum block explorer — acquired Solscan, citing the team's track record of making blockchain data accessible and user-friendly. At the time of the acquisition, Solscan was drawing over 3 million monthly users.

What Solscan Does

Solscan covers the full surface of on-chain Solana activity from a single interface. At its core, the platform allows anyone to look up wallet addresses, transactions, blocks, programs, and tokens in real time. But its utility extends well beyond lookup. The platform bundles analytics dashboards, DeFi research tools, NFT collection tracking, and a public API into a coherent product aimed at users ranging from casual traders to protocol developers.

The transaction view goes further than raw data. Solscan parses instruction data and presents transaction summaries in plain language where possible — showing what assets moved, which programs were invoked, and what priority fees were paid. This is meaningful on Solana, where a single transaction can touch a dozen programs and produce dozens of account state changes that a raw log makes difficult to interpret.

Analytics and Research Dashboards

Solscan ships several standalone analytics modules that make it a research destination, not just a lookup tool.

Its stablecoin analytics dashboard tracks total stablecoin market cap on Solana, holder counts, transfer volume, and supply broken down by individual stablecoin. Given the scale of stablecoin activity on Solana — the chain now hosts billions in circulating USDC, USDT, and a growing range of yield-bearing and protocol-native stablecoins — this dashboard gives market observers a single view of the stablecoin landscape.

Fee analytics surface priority fee data across the network: minimum, average, and maximum fees for recent blocks. As Solana's priority fee market has grown more active, this data is useful for both traders optimizing transaction landing and developers calibrating fee estimation in their applications.

The platform also provides DeFi program overviews that let users inspect protocol-level activity — transaction volumes, active users, and program interactions — without needing to run custom queries. Launchpad monitoring covers new token launches and early-stage protocol activity. Whale tracking surfaces large wallet movements and concentration data for tokens and programs.

Wallet-level P&L dashboards are a newer addition, allowing users to assess historical performance for any Solana address — a feature that has become a standard expectation for Solana portfolio tools.

NFT and Token Coverage

Solscan tracks NFT collections natively, including mint activity, transfer history, floor price data, and holder distribution for collections across the Solana NFT ecosystem. Users can drill into individual NFT metadata, ownership history, and royalty flows without leaving the explorer.

Token analytics cover SPL token supply, holder counts, transfer activity, and program associations. For any token, Solscan surfaces the associated mint address, freeze authority status, and decimals alongside market-facing data where available.

The public Solscan API gives developers programmatic access to the same on-chain data available in the UI. Endpoints cover accounts, transactions, tokens, and program data with real-time delivery. This API is widely embedded in third-party dashboards, bots, and data aggregators across the Solana ecosystem.

Solscan also offers Explorer-as-a-Service, which allows third-party applications to embed Solscan's Solana data inside their own products. Custom RPC settings let advanced users point Solscan at their own RPC endpoint rather than relying on shared infrastructure — useful for privacy, rate limit management, or accessing archival data. Custom IDL uploads let developers attach their own program interface definitions, which Solscan then uses to decode that program's transactions into readable instruction labels rather than raw hex.

Solscan Lite

For users who need only basic lookups, Solscan offers a Lite interface that strips the analytics layer and presents transaction data, wallet balances, and block confirmations in a minimal design. The Lite interface is optimized for speed and simplicity — useful for quick checks on a transaction hash or address without navigating the full analytics platform.

Ecosystem Position

Solscan's position as the default explorer for most Solana users stems from depth of coverage and early adoption by the ecosystem's key applications. Most Solana wallets link directly to Solscan when showing transaction history or account details. DeFi frontends use Solscan links for program and pool pages. NFT marketplaces surface Solscan links for token and mint data.

The Etherscan acquisition in early 2024 brought additional institutional backing and a commitment to continued investment in the product. Etherscan's CEO Matthew Tan described the acquisition as an alignment of missions: both teams built around credibly neutral, equitable access to blockchain data. Post-acquisition plans focused on integrating useful features across both platforms and improving navigation and accessibility.

Solscan remains the reference point for on-chain Solana data. Whether a user is checking a transaction, auditing a program, researching a token, or building a product that consumes Solana data, Solscan is typically the first destination they reach.
