Breakpoint 2023: OPOS – Sling – A Breakthrough in Crypto Payments
Summary Breakpoint 2023 introduced the cutting-edge payment platform Sling, designed to harness the full capabilities of Solana's blockchain for instant and nearly fee-less global transactions. ... Mike, the founder and previous team lead at Facebook and a banking innovator at Monzo, reveals how Sling combines the power of cryptocurrencies with the accessibility and user-friendliness of traditional banking.
Sling
Sling Money is a cross-border payments app built on Solana that abstracts blockchain complexity from end users, converting deposited funds into stablecoins for instant low-cost transfers across borders, then converting back to local fiat for recipients. In April 2026, the product rebranded as Morse, expanding its feature set while retaining its original Solana-based infrastructure.
Core Mechanism
Sling routes transfers through the Solana blockchain using stablecoins — primarily USDP (Pax Dollar, regulated by the New York State Department of Financial Services) and USDC — as the settlement layer. A user loads funds via debit card or bank transfer; the app converts to stablecoins on Solana, where the transfer settles in under a second at minimal cost; the recipient can then withdraw to a local bank account, mobile money wallet, or keep the balance in-app. Solana throughput and fee structure make the economics viable at retail transfer sizes where Ethereum or Bitcoin would be prohibitive.
For recipients who do not have a Sling account, the sender generates a Sling Link — a payment link that allows a non-user to provide bank details and receive a fiat payout without downloading the app. Withdrawals in the United States use real-time payment rails including RTP, FedNow, Visa Direct, and Mastercard Send, with ACH as a fallback.
Supported Assets
Sling supports three stablecoins on Solana:
- USDP (Pax Dollar): the initial settlement asset, launched April 2024, fully reserve-backed and regulated by NYDFS
- USDC: added to broaden compatibility with wallets and exchanges already holding USDC on Solana
- EURC: Circle's euro stablecoin, introduced March 2025 for European-corridor transfers
Users can load USDC directly from external Solana wallets or exchanges and withdraw to fiat via the supported payout network in their country.
Geographic Reach
At US launch in November 2024, Sling supported instant transfers to 75+ countries, with stablecoin support available in an additional 75+ countries. By early 2025, the platform expanded to 150+ countries and cited a reach of over 2.7 billion people. Key corridors include US-to-Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia), US-to-Latin America (Brazil, Mexico, Costa Rica), and US-to-Southeast Asia. The app targets remote workers, freelancers, and cross-border families as its primary user base.
Regulatory History
Sling Money is operated by Avian Labs. The company built a multi-jurisdiction regulatory stack over its first three years:
- US: Registered Money Services Business with the US Treasury from early operations
- Netherlands / EEA (April 2024): Obtained a Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) license from the Dutch Authority for Financial Markets (AFM), granting authorization across all 30 EEA countries
- UK (December 2024): Received authorization from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) as a Crypto Asset Service Provider, entering a closed beta in the UK
Team and Funding
Sling was co-founded by Mike Hudack (CEO) and Simon Amor (Co-founder and Product Designer). Hudack stated the company's aim is to give "all Americans access to a global instant financial system."
The company raised a total of $20 million across multiple rounds. The $15 million Series A was led by Union Square Ventures. Ribbit Capital and Slow Ventures participated as seed-stage backers. No token was issued.
Solana Ecosystem Fit
Sling is a consumer fintech application that routes all settlement through Solana rather than using the chain as an investment vehicle. It does not have on-chain programs listed in the Solana Compass project database. The product uses Solana because its sub-second finality and sub-cent transaction fees are prerequisites for the unit economics of micro-remittance use cases — something the team documented in its July 2024 "Sling Master Plan" post.
Rebrand to Morse
In April 2026, Sling Money rebranded to Morse. The sling.money domain now redirects to morsemoney.com. Under the Morse brand, the product expanded to include multi-currency accounts (USD, EUR, MXN, BRL), a debit card usable in 150+ countries, access to US stocks and ETFs through a "Morse Invest" feature, and broader crypto on/off-ramp integrations. The underlying Solana infrastructure and stablecoin settlement mechanism carried over from the Sling era.
