Shopify is an e-commerce platform that provides merchants with tools to build online stores, process payments, and manage inventory across web and physical retail channels. Users can customize storefronts, connect payment gateways including cryptocurrency options, and fulfill orders from a single dashboard. The platform supports USDC payments via a Solana Pay plugin, enabling merchants to accept stablecoin transactions at checkout.

Shopify
Shopify is one of the world's largest commerce platforms, providing businesses of every size with the tools to sell products online, in physical retail locations, and across social and marketplace channels. Founded in 2006, it powers millions of merchants globally with a unified stack that includes storefront creation, inventory and order management, payment processing, shipping, analytics, and marketing automation. The platform's native payment product, Shop Pay, reaches over 250 million shoppers, and its App Store lists more than 21,000 third-party integrations.
The Problem Shopify Solves
Building and operating a commerce business has traditionally required stitching together separate systems for storefronts, inventory, checkout, and payments. Shopify consolidates these into one managed platform so merchants can launch quickly, manage multichannel sales from a single dashboard, and scale without rebuilding infrastructure. Its international selling tools, built-in tax handling, and fulfillment network remove additional operational friction.
Solana Integration: Bringing Crypto Payments to Millions of Merchants
Shopify's relevance to the Solana ecosystem stems from its official Solana Pay integration, launched in 2022 and expanded substantially in 2023 and 2024. Solana Pay is an open-source payments protocol built on Solana that enables instant, low-cost transfers between wallets, settling in under a second with average transaction costs of less than a fraction of a cent.
The integration is delivered through a dedicated Solana Pay app in the Shopify App Store, maintained by Helio, a crypto payment infrastructure company that assumed stewardship of the plugin in January 2024. Any Shopify merchant can install the app, complete a brief Know Your Business verification, connect a Solana wallet, and immediately begin accepting crypto payments alongside traditional card options at checkout — without modifying their storefront code.
How the Checkout Flow Works
When a customer reaches checkout on a Solana Pay-enabled Shopify store, they see a crypto payment option alongside the standard card and Shop Pay options. The customer selects their preferred token, and the transaction is sent peer-to-peer on-chain directly from the buyer's wallet to the merchant — no payment processor holds funds in transit. Helio's infrastructure handles the routing and, by default, auto-converts the incoming crypto into USDC so the merchant receives stablecoin revenue without exposure to token price volatility. Merchants can optionally enable direct fiat conversion from USDC to their bank currency.
Token and Chain Support
The initial integration focused on USDC on Solana, giving merchants a dollar-denominated settlement option that avoided the accounting complexity of volatile assets. Subsequent updates expanded token support substantially. As of mid-2024, the plugin supports hundreds of tokens, including SOL, BONK, Circle's USDC and EURC, PayPal's PYUSD, and Ondo Finance's USDY. The integration also went multichain, adding support for payments originating from Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ethereum Layer 2 networks, while merchants continue to settle on Solana. Buyers can pay in their preferred asset while merchants receive a stablecoin or fiat equivalent — removing a key adoption barrier on both sides.
NFT Loyalty and Token Gating
Beyond payment processing, the Helio Solana Pay plugin adds web3-native commerce features that have no equivalent in traditional payment processors. Merchants can airdrop NFTs to customers at the point of purchase, enabling on-chain proof-of-purchase receipts and post-sale loyalty programs. Token gating allows merchants to restrict discounts or product access to holders of specific NFTs, creating membership-style commerce experiences. These features are configured directly in the Shopify admin alongside standard discount and inventory settings.
Fees and Merchant Economics
Traditional card payments carry processing fees in the 2.9% to 3.5% range, in addition to any Shopify subscription-tier transaction fees. The Solana Pay integration charges a flat 0.75% transaction fee — roughly a quarter of conventional processing costs. In the first six months after launch, the plugin processed approximately $50 million in transactions across more than 200 Shopify stores, with merchants collectively saving over $1 million in fees relative to what card processing would have cost.
The most high-profile deployment was the Solana Mobile Chapter 2 device pre-sale, where Helio processed $35 million in handset sales through the plugin, with more than half of those transactions conducted in cryptocurrency. Helio offered 0% merchant fees for that launch, demonstrating the floor-level cost that on-chain payments can reach at scale. The plugin has since handled peak loads of more than 20 transactions per second with a 98% success rate, matching the reliability benchmarks of traditional payment rails.
Platform Scale and Ecosystem Position
Shopify's integration with Solana Pay is significant because of the merchant reach it provides to the Solana ecosystem. Millions of active Shopify stores — ranging from independent brands to enterprise retailers — represent a pre-built distribution channel for on-chain payments. Each store that activates the Solana Pay option becomes a point where ordinary consumers interact with Solana-based transactions without needing to understand the underlying infrastructure.
The integration was featured at Solana Breakpoint 2023 and Breakpoint 2024, where Helio presented transaction volume growth and outlined upcoming expansions including automated KYB for buyers, single-tap purchasing, and broader token gating capabilities. Shopify itself presented the integration at Breakpoint 2023 as a demonstration of how high-throughput blockchains can serve as settlement infrastructure for mainstream commerce at scale.
Security and Settlement
Because payments are on-chain, merchants can verify settlement independently by examining blockchain records rather than relying solely on a processor's ledger. The absence of an intermediary holding funds reduces counterparty risk. Refunds are processed manually — the merchant issues a crypto or stablecoin transfer back to the customer's wallet — which is consistent with how decentralized payment flows work but requires merchant attention compared to automated card chargebacks. Shopify's help documentation notes this distinction explicitly for merchants evaluating the integration.
Shopify's core platform carries SOC 2 compliance and PCI DSS certification for its traditional payment infrastructure. The Solana Pay plugin's security is supplemented by Helio's planned automated Know Your Buyer screening for future plugin versions.
