OVEX Exchange
OVEX Exchange is a centralized cryptocurrency trading platform that enables users to buy, sell, and trade digital assets against fiat currencies and other cryptocurrencies. The platform provides instant conversions, orderbook trading across multiple market pairs, and wallet services for storing digital assets. Users can deposit fiat currency, execute trades with real-time pricing, and withdraw funds to bank accounts. The exchange supports a wide range of cryptocurrencies and fiat currencies including ZAR, USD, EUR, GBP, and AED.
OVEX
OVEX is Africa's institutional-grade cryptocurrency exchange and cross-border payments infrastructure platform. Founded in February 2017 in Cape Town, South Africa, OVEX was built around a single premise: that moving money across African borders should not require correspondent banking chains, days of settlement delay, or prohibitive intermediary fees. The company has since grown into one of the continent's most regulated and highest-volume digital asset venues, processing more than $450 million in monthly volume across 26 jurisdictions.
Background and Founding
OVEX was co-founded by Jonathan Ovadia (CEO), Nikhar Ramchunder, Paul Rawlins, and Tom Masojada, all based in Cape Town. Jonathan Ovadia, who studied Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Cape Town, brought a serial entrepreneurship background to the project — having previously co-founded on-demand delivery startup GTG, which became South Africa's leading on-demand grocery service. OVEX drew early investor interest from prominent South African crypto investors, including Vinny Lingham's Newtown Partners, followed by a seed investment from Invictus Capital. In April 2021, the company raised a $4 million funding round to accelerate expansion across Africa.
The legal entity behind OVEX is Chameleon Capital Canada Inc. (formerly Paygle Inc.), registered with Canada's FINTRAC as a Money Services Business authorized for foreign exchange dealing and virtual currency services. In South Africa, OVEX is registered under number 2018/218598/07, operates as an authorized Financial Services Provider (FSP 53922) under the FSCA, and holds a licensed credit provider registration (NCRCP15552). Additional regulatory approvals span the FCA in the United Kingdom, the AMF in France, VARA in the UAE, and the South African Reserve Bank (SARB).
What OVEX Does
OVEX positions itself at the intersection of institutional crypto liquidity and emerging market FX infrastructure. Rather than functioning as a single-purpose trading venue, the platform operates simultaneously as a market maker, OTC dealer, prime broker, and payments infrastructure provider — integrating multiple counterparty roles into a single regulated venue.
Quick Convert is OVEX's self-service interface for retail and institutional users who need immediate access to crypto liquidity. The RFQ (Request-for-Quote) model provides transparent, executable prices across 16-plus currency pairs with no trading fees, starting from a $10 minimum purchase. Users can buy or sell SOL, BTC, ETH, USDT, USDC, and other supported assets against ZAR, USD, EUR, GBP, NGN, XAF, and more than a dozen other fiat currencies.
OTC Execution serves corporate and institutional clients that require high-volume, direct-counterparty digital asset transactions. The OTC desk provides deep liquidity for large block trades without moving market prices, with settlement handled on OVEX rails.
Prime Brokerage supplies white-label infrastructure to brokers, fintechs, and payment aggregators that want to embed crypto-to-fiat conversion capability into their own products. Clients access OVEX pricing and settlement via a public API, making it a backend liquidity layer for third-party financial applications.
Cross-Border Payments is the product that most directly expresses OVEX's core mission. The platform converts fiat into stablecoins — primarily USDT and USDC — at the point of origin, moves value across borders using blockchain rails, and converts back to local currency at the destination. By replacing the traditional correspondent banking chain with stablecoin settlement, OVEX delivers near-instant cross-border transfers across 15-plus active corridors in Africa, the UK, and the EU. Recipients receive local currency within minutes rather than waiting the one to five business days typical of SWIFT-dependent remittance services.
Geographic Reach
OVEX is currently active in South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, and France, with expansion into the UK, UAE, Turkey, and Australia planned or underway. The company's 2025 rollout across Nigeria, Kenya, and Zambia was driven by structural demand from businesses, payment providers, and financial institutions seeking alternatives to legacy cross-border infrastructure. The launch of EUR rails via OVEX's licensed presence in France opened a materially stronger European corridor in the same period, contributing to a year-on-year trading volume increase in the triple digits.
Solana and Stablecoin Infrastructure
OVEX's relevance to the Solana ecosystem stems from two connected threads. First, SOL is a supported trading asset on the platform; users across more than 26 jurisdictions can buy and sell Solana directly against ZAR and other fiat currencies, making OVEX one of the primary on-ramps and off-ramps for SOL in African markets. Second, OVEX's cross-border payments rails depend on stablecoins — USDT and USDC — as the settlement medium. Both assets have deep liquidity on Solana, and as the Solana network has become one of the primary chains for stablecoin activity (with over $15 billion in stablecoin supply on-chain), the infrastructure OVEX uses for fast, low-cost settlement aligns with Solana's payments stack.
OVEX does not describe itself as a Solana-native protocol and does not deploy on-chain programs; it is a regulated centralized platform. However, its reliance on USDC and USDT as settlement tokens positions it as part of the broader stablecoin payments infrastructure that connects regulated off-chain financial intermediaries to public blockchain settlement layers, including Solana.
Security and Custody
OVEX employs a layered custody architecture anchored by Fireblocks Multi-Party Computation (MPC) technology, which distributes private key material across separate parties to eliminate single points of compromise. Client assets are held in offline cold storage, with transfers restricted to pre-approved whitelists and requiring multi-signature authorization. The exchange uses multiple segregated wallets to limit risk concentration, and institutional client assets are held in custody separate from operational funds.
Institutional Focus
With 50-plus institutional clients and a product set built explicitly for corporates, banks, brokers, and payment companies, OVEX operates in a different segment than consumer-facing retail exchanges. The company's API-first architecture allows institutional partners to programmatically access pricing, execute trades, and manage settlement without using the consumer web interface. OVEX has also partnered with Finery Markets to extend institutional crypto liquidity access across Africa, further deepening its position as a regulated infrastructure layer for institutional digital asset activity on the continent.
OVEX represents a regulated, multi-licensed bridge between Africa's emerging-market FX environment and global crypto liquidity — using stablecoins and blockchain settlement rails to do what correspondent banks have historically done slowly and expensively.
