LCX

LCX is a regulated cryptocurrency exchange headquartered in Vaduz, Liechtenstein. Founded in 2018 by CEO Monty C.M. Metzger, the company has built its product line inside a defined regulatory framework from the outset, operating under Liechtenstein's Token and Trusted Technology Service Provider Act (TVTG). Beyond spot trading, LCX has expanded into real-world asset tokenization and is building Liberty Chain, a compliance-native Layer-2 blockchain on the Optimism OP Stack.

Origins and Regulatory Foundation

The concept for LCX originated in November 2017 in Zug, Switzerland, when Metzger, who had been advising investors and institutions on blockchain technology since 2013, wrote the initial idea for a professional-grade crypto exchange. LCX AG was incorporated in 2018 with its registered office in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, and additional offices in Crypto Valley Zug and New Delhi.

From the start, the company structured itself under Liechtenstein's TVTG, a framework that predated the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation and gave LCX one of the earliest formal legal bases for operating a digital asset exchange in Europe. The exchange does not serve residents of the EEA, the United Kingdom, or the United States in its current form, pending authorization as a Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) under MiCA from the Liechtenstein Financial Market Authority. The MiCA CASP application was filed and remains under review as of mid-2026.

The company maintains regulated entities in Liechtenstein, Lithuania, and the United States.

Exchange Products

LCX Exchange offers spot trading in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other digital assets through desktop and mobile applications. The platform provides AI-assisted trading tools, a token launch facility for new projects seeking a regulated venue to conduct public sales, a Rewards Hub for user incentives, staking and earn products, and a VIP tier for high-volume traders.

An Exchange V3.0 relaunch is in development that plans to add futures contracts, margin trading, and crypto CFDs, along with a revised interface focused on execution speed and professional-grade order management.

The LCX token is the exchange's native utility asset. Token holders receive trading fee discounts and access to priority features on the platform.

Security Incident: January 2022

On January 8, 2022, an attacker gained unauthorized access to a private key controlling one of LCX Exchange's primary Ethereum hot wallets, transferring approximately 7.94 million USD in digital assets from the exchange's address to addresses under the attacker's control. The attacker converted the proceeds through Tornado Cash within roughly 90 minutes of the initial theft. LCX subsequently pursued legal action in New York courts against unnamed defendants. The incident has not been publicly attributed to a named actor.

MiCA White Paper Program

LCX has made MiCA compliance a distinct business line, not only for its own token but as a service to other projects seeking to operate in the European market. According to a sponsored article published by CoinTelegraph, LCX authored 63 MiCA-compliant crypto-asset white papers filed with the European Securities and Markets Authority, a figure the company states represents approximately 9% of all white papers in the ESMA registry. The accuracy of that proportion figure is asserted by LCX; ESMA does not publish a running count of accepted filings.

The company has also published a complete MiCA guidance hub on its website covering the regulatory structure, compliance timelines, and template documentation for issuers navigating EU requirements.

Liberty Chain: Compliance-Native L2

Liberty Chain is LCX's most significant infrastructure initiative. The network is a Layer-2 blockchain built on Optimism's OP Stack, designed specifically for the tokenization of real-world assets under regulated conditions. Unlike general-purpose L2s, Liberty Chain embeds compliance controls at the infrastructure level: issuers can enforce KYC verification requirements on token holders, whitelist wallets for jurisdictional restrictions, and maintain real-time token holder registries without relying on off-chain intermediaries.

The architecture organizes asset issuance across three layers: an Asset Layer for registering and verifying tokenized assets, a Policy Layer for embedding programmable compliance rules directly into the token's behavior, and a Liquidity Layer for connecting issued assets to trading venues and cross-chain environments. Fast settlement and low transaction fees are core design targets, with interoperability planned via the OP Superchain ecosystem. The LCX token will function as the fee and governance asset within the Liberty Chain network.

Liberty Chain mainnet was targeted for Q3 2026, with staking pools and on-chain governance scheduled to launch alongside.

Current Direction

As of August 2026, LCX's public communications signal expansion into DeFi products and preparations for a US market entry. The exchange's blog publishes regularly on topics including Ethereum upgrades, Layer 2 consolidation trends, account abstraction, and tokenization developments, reflecting the company's positioning as an educational resource alongside a trading venue. Recent social activity points to undisclosed product announcements the team describes as forthcoming.
