KuCoin
KuCoin is a centralized cryptocurrency exchange founded in September 2017 and headquartered in the Seychelles. Often described as the "People's Exchange," KuCoin has grown into one of the top ten crypto trading venues globally, serving over 45 million registered users across more than 200 countries. Its catalogue covers 1,000+ cryptocurrencies and 1,300+ trading pairs, making it one of the broadest-selection exchanges in the industry.
Core Trading Products
KuCoin's foundation is its spot trading engine, which supports maker and taker fees of 0.10% at the base tier, falling to negative maker rebates for the highest-volume traders. Alongside spot, the platform offers:
- Futures trading with leverage up to 125x, with fees starting at 0.02% for makers and 0.06% for takers.
- Margin trading with up to 10x leverage on spot markets.
- OTC block trading for institutional and large-volume orders.
These three modes give traders tools for directional speculation, hedging, and large-position execution in a single venue.
Earning and Passive Income
KuCoin Earn aggregates the exchange's passive income products, including flexible and fixed-term staking, lending, and yield-bearing savings accounts. During periods of high borrow demand the platform has quoted APYs of 20–30% on select assets, though rates fluctuate with market conditions. Leveraged ETFs offer directional exposure with built-in rebalancing, removing the funding-rate and liquidation risk of perpetual contracts for straightforward bulls and bears.
Automated Trading
KuCoin provides free automated trading bots directly on the platform, requiring no external API integration. Strategies available include Spot Grid (profit from price oscillation within a range), Futures Grid (the same concept applied to perpetuals), DCA (systematic accumulation), and Smart Rebalance (portfolio-weight maintenance). These tools are designed to let retail users implement systematic strategies without coding expertise.
Payments and Consumer Products
Beyond trading, KuCoin has extended into consumer finance with KuCard, a crypto-backed payment card, and KuCoin Pay, a merchant payments rails product. GemSPACE is the exchange's launchpad and early-project discovery environment, while KuCoin Alpha provides a regulated context for listing momentum-driven early-stage tokens — a channel that has been used to introduce Solana ecosystem projects to a broad retail audience.
KCS Token
KuCoin Token (KCS) is the exchange's native utility and revenue-sharing token. Launched in September 2017 alongside the exchange, KCS was designed with a direct profit-sharing mechanism: 50% of KuCoin's daily trading fee revenue is distributed to KCS holders in the form of daily KCS dividends. This aligns KCS holders financially with the exchange's trading volume. KCS holders also receive a 20% discount on trading fees.
KuCoin has committed to a deflationary buyback programme targeting a reduction in total supply from 200 million KCS toward 100 million through quarterly buy-and-burn operations funded by exchange profits. As of mid-2026, KuCoin marked its ninth anniversary by framing KCS as a "value participation layer," emphasising expanded utility integrations across trading and payment products.
Solana Support
Solana is actively supported across KuCoin's product stack. SOL/USDT is one of the exchange's highlighted "hot" trading pairs on the spot market, with corresponding SOL futures contracts available for directional and leveraged plays. SOL is eligible for KuCoin Earn staking products, allowing holders to generate yield passively. The KuCoin Alpha platform has been used to list emerging Solana-ecosystem projects, offering early price discovery and liquidity to Solana-native tokens before they achieve broader exchange listings.
KuCoin has also published research and educational content on Solana specifically, reflecting active community engagement with the Solana ecosystem and recognition of Solana's growing share of on-chain spot trading volume — which reached 41% of the total in Q1 2026.
Security and Audits
KuCoin holds several security certifications: SOC 2 Type II (audited over 12 months by Decrypt Compliance, completed April 2025), ISO 27001:2022, ISO 27701:2025, and an AAA rating on CER. The exchange publishes monthly Proof of Reserves (PoR) reports audited by blockchain security firm Hacken using Merkle Tree verification, enabling users to confirm their balances are fully backed on-chain. By February 2026 KuCoin had published 32 consecutive monthly PoR reports, all showing reserve ratios for BTC, ETH, USDT, and USDC above 100%.
KuCoin announced a $2 billion Trust Project in 2026, a multi-year programme targeting upgrades to security infrastructure, compliance frameworks, risk controls, and user asset protection.
Cold storage with multi-signature controls, two-factor authentication, trade passwords, anti-phishing codes, and API IP whitelists form the operational security baseline for user accounts.
Team and Background
KuCoin was founded by Michael Gan and Johny Lyu, who had previously co-founded Missyi Inc, an image-editing and sharing application. Michael Gan came from a background in blockchain research and a prior role at Alibaba's Ant Financial. Johny Lyu served as global CEO, overseeing daily operations.
In January 2025, KuCoin's operating entity, Peken Global, entered a guilty plea in a US federal case related to operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business, resulting in approximately $297 million in penalties and forfeitures. Co-founders Michael Gan and Eric Don stepped away from the exchange's operations as part of the resolution. KuCoin has continued to operate under refreshed leadership since, and the $2B Trust Project and ongoing regulatory compliance investments represent the exchange's public response to the settlement.
Exchange Position
KuCoin occupies a notable space in the centralised exchange landscape: broad enough in asset selection to frequently serve as an early listing venue for emerging tokens, particularly from the Solana and Layer-2 ecosystems, while large enough to provide the deep order books and fee structures that professional traders require. For Solana participants specifically, KuCoin functions as a major off-ramp, on-ramp, and yield venue for SOL and Solana-native tokens.
