In September 2020, KuCoin suffered a significant security breach in which roughly $280 million in cryptocurrency was stolen. The exchange worked with blockchain projects to freeze stolen tokens, coordinated with law enforcement, and covered remaining user losses through its insurance fund — recovering the substantial majority of affected assets.

Regulatory History

KuCoin's regulatory status has been tested significantly. In March 2023, the U.S. Department of Justice charged the company and two of its co-founders with violating the Bank Secrecy Act by operating an unlicensed money transmitting business that allegedly processed billions of dollars in suspicious funds without adequate anti-money laundering controls.

In December 2024, KuCoin entered a settlement with the DOJ totaling $297 million and agreed to exit the United States market for a period of two years. BC Wong was subsequently appointed CEO in 2025, representing a leadership transition as the exchange pursued a path toward regulatory remediation and compliance infrastructure improvements.

KuCoin continues to operate globally, excluding the United States market per the settlement terms.

Team and History

KuCoin was founded in September 2017 and quickly differentiated itself by listing emerging altcoins ahead of its larger competitors. The platform grew through multiple market cycles, expanding its product range from spot trading to a full financial services suite. The KuCoin Community Chain (KCC), a separate EVM-compatible blockchain developed under the kcc-community GitHub organization, was established to extend the KuCoin ecosystem into decentralized finance.
