Indodax
Indodax is Indonesia's first and largest licensed cryptocurrency exchange, offering Indonesian retail and institutional investors a fully regulated gateway to buy, sell, and earn on more than 450 digital assets — and, since April 2026, to trade tokenized shares of global equities settled on the Solana blockchain.
Origins and Company History
Indodax launched in 2014 as Bitcoin Indonesia (bitcoin.co.id), co-founded by Oscar Darmawan and William Sutanto. Darmawan, who had observed early international cryptocurrency markets, returned to Indonesia to build the country's first Bitcoin exchange. The platform received angel funding at launch, followed by a round from Southeast Asian venture firm East Ventures in November 2017. As the asset class expanded beyond Bitcoin, the exchange rebranded to Indodax — shorthand for Indonesia Digital Asset Exchange — to reflect its broadened scope. By January 2026 it had crossed 9.6 million registered users, cementing its position as the dominant retail crypto venue in Southeast Asia's largest economy.
How the Platform Works
Indodax is a centralized order-book exchange that holds customer deposits and matches trades server-side. Users fund accounts in Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) via bank transfer at no fee, or deposit supported cryptocurrencies directly on-chain. From there they can trade across 490+ pairs in two distinct environments.
Indodax Lite targets first-time investors: a simplified interface executes trades at market prices with slightly wider spreads and limits access to IDR-denominated markets only.
Indodax Pro surfaces limit, market, and stop-limit order types alongside price charts and technical indicators, and adds USDT-denominated markets to the IDR pairs available in Lite. Fee rates on USDT markets are notably tighter — 0.03% maker / 0.06% taker — compared to IDR market rates of 0.10% maker / 0.20% taker.
Beyond spot trading, the platform includes:
- Quick Buy — single-click market execution for users who do not want to navigate the order book
- Staking and earning — yield programs on selected assets
- Recurring investment — scheduled purchases at user-defined intervals, a dollar-cost averaging tool branded toward long-term savers
- INDODAX Academy — an integrated educational library covering blockchain fundamentals through advanced trading concepts
Supported Assets
As of mid-2026, Indodax lists more than 450 digital assets. SOL has been among the platform's more actively traded assets as Solana's retail profile has grown in Southeast Asia. The exchange also lists the wider set of major-cap tokens (BTC, ETH, BNB, MATIC, TRX) and a long tail of smaller Indonesian community tokens whose primary trading venues are domestic.
Tokenized Stocks on Solana
In April 2026 Indodax extended its product line with tokenized global equities, a move that materially deepens the platform's relationship with the Solana network. Deposits opened April 9 and trading commenced April 16. The initial seven instruments track:
- Tesla (TSLA)
- Alphabet (GOOGL)
- NVIDIA (NVDA)
- Apple (AAPL)
- Amazon (AMZN)
- Coinbase (COIN)
- Circle (CRCL)
Each token is pegged one-to-one to the underlying share price. Issuance and settlement run on the Solana blockchain, chosen for its throughput and low transaction costs. The format enables fractional ownership, 24/7 trading independent of US exchange hours, and onboarding without an international brokerage account — a meaningful barrier for most Indonesian retail investors. Indodax has flagged that price discrepancies can emerge when crypto markets remain open during US market closures, and advises users to understand this timing risk.
Regulatory Standing
Indodax operates under Indonesian law as a registered digital asset trader. Its regulatory touchpoints include:
- OJK (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan) — Indonesia's Financial Services Authority
- CFX (Crypto Futures Exchange)
- KOMDIGI — Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs
- Bappebti — Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency, the primary crypto licensing body
The exchange holds ISO 27001 (information security management) and ISO 9001 (quality management) certifications and publishes on-chain Proof of Reserves to give users transparency over custodied balances.
Security History
In September 2024 Indodax suffered a significant hot-wallet breach. Blockchain security firm Cyvers Alerts flagged approximately 150 suspicious transactions; total losses were reported between $18 million and $22 million across ETH, TRX, BTC, MATIC, and smaller tokens. Cyvers attributed the attack pattern to North Korea's Lazarus Group, though no official attribution has been confirmed. Bappebti summoned Indodax management for a formal review in the aftermath. The exchange paused withdrawals during the investigation and subsequently resumed operations. The incident underscores the custodial risks inherent to centralized exchanges and hot wallets, and prompted Indodax to publicize enhanced security commitments, including the ongoing Proof of Reserves publication.
Solana Fit
Indodax's connection to Solana operates at two levels. First, SOL itself is a prominently listed and actively traded asset on the platform, giving Indonesian retail access to Solana's native token through familiar IDR payment rails. Second, Indodax selected Solana as the settlement layer for its tokenized-stocks product — a commercially significant choice that demonstrates institutional confidence in Solana's throughput, finality speed, and cost profile for real-world asset issuance. As tokenized equities expand beyond the initial seven instruments, Indodax's on-chain activity on Solana is set to grow alongside.
For Solana ecosystem observers, Indodax represents both a distribution channel — one of the largest fiat on-ramps into SOL for Southeast Asian buyers — and an emerging RWA issuer building on the network.
