Day1X

Day1X was a Melbourne-based Australian cryptocurrency exchange that competed on flat-fee pricing and local AUD payment rails, operating from December 2023 until it closed in April 2026.

What Day1X Was

Day1X positioned itself as a low-cost alternative for Australian retail crypto buyers, marketing under the tagline "Less Fees. More Crypto." Its core promise was simple: a flat 0.10% trading fee on every trade, with no volume tiers, no maker-taker distinction, and no hidden charges on different order types. For a country where exchanges historically charged 0.5–2% or bundled fees into spreads, the pitch was straightforward cost arbitrage.

The exchange was founded by Phil Horner and David Swinden, both co-founders of Fusion Markets, a forex and CFD broker also based in Melbourne. That background in regulated retail trading informed Day1X's approach: AUSTRAC registration from the outset, a clean onboarding flow, and an emphasis on familiarity for Australian users rather than on DeFi experimentation.

Core Features

Day1X operated as a centralized exchange (CEX) with a narrow but mainstream asset list: Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), Ripple (XRP), Binance Coin (BNB), Cardano (ADA), Avalanche (AVAX), Chainlink (LINK), and the stablecoins USDT and USDC. The focus was on high-liquidity assets with established Australian demand rather than a long tail of tokens.

AUD deposit and withdrawal was free via bank transfer, and the exchange covered third-party payment processor fees during promotional periods. This made the cost comparison with competitors like CoinSpot or Swyftx favorable on paper for users who transacted in meaningful sizes.

The platform introduced several engagement features in its later months: a Leaderboard that tracked user activity and rewarded participation, a "Crypto Packs" product launched in January 2026 that grouped assets by market narrative (allowing users to buy thematic baskets without constructing them manually), and corporate accounts that went live in March 2026. Customer support was offered around the clock.

Solana Ecosystem Relevance

Day1X listed Solana (SOL) as a tradeable asset from early in its operation, making it an AUD on-ramp for Australian users seeking SOL exposure. Its relevance to the Solana ecosystem was limited to this fiat-to-SOL gateway function; the exchange had no on-chain presence on Solana, no registered programs, and no DeFi integration. It was not a validator, liquid staking provider, or protocol participant.

Regulatory Standing

Day1X was registered with AUSTRAC (the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre), Australia's financial intelligence agency and the primary AML/CTF regulator for digital currency exchanges. AUSTRAC registration is mandatory for Australian exchanges operating legally and requires ongoing compliance reporting. No enforcement action against Day1X has been identified in available public records.

Closure

Day1X announced its closure on 30 March 2026. The exchange switched to withdrawal-only mode on 6 April 2026 and took its main trading interface offline on 8 May 2026. The closure page published on day1x.io included a form for users who believed they had remaining balances to submit account recovery requests with photo ID.

No detailed public explanation for the shutdown was published. The closure followed a period in which the platform appeared to be actively expanding — corporate accounts launched two weeks before the closure announcement, and blog posts through mid-March 2026 showed normal promotional activity. The broader 2026 environment saw a number of smaller centralized exchanges exit operations as regulatory compliance costs rose and competition from larger platforms intensified.

Team and History

Phil Horner and David Swinden, the founders, came from a background in retail leveraged trading through Fusion Markets rather than from crypto-native infrastructure. This shaped Day1X as a compliance-first, accessibility-focused product aimed at the same demographic that Fusion Markets served in forex: cost-conscious Australian retail traders. The exchange launched in December 2023 and operated for approximately 28 months before shutting down.

Assessment

Day1X occupied a real but narrow position in the Australian retail crypto market: a regulated, genuinely low-fee spot exchange that provided AUD rails and a familiar experience for users wary of the complexity of DeFi or the fee structures of larger incumbents. Its Crypto Packs product suggested an attempt to differentiate beyond pure price competition in its final months. The platform closed before establishing a strong market share position. Its primary legacy for Solana users is as a now-defunct AUD on-ramp for SOL.
