Cryptonia

Cryptonia is a non-custodial stablecoin-to-fiat exchange platform based in Nigeria, built to let users buy and sell USDC and USDT with Nigerian Naira in under 10 seconds. The platform targets the tens of millions of Nigerians who rely on dollar-pegged stablecoins to hedge against inflation, receive international payments, and conduct cross-border transactions — without the risks and friction that have historically defined the country's informal crypto markets.

The Problem

Nigeria ranks among the world's highest in stablecoin adoption by penetration, with roughly 26 million Nigerians using USDT or USDC as a dollar proxy in the face of persistent naira depreciation and inflation that exceeded 30% in early 2024. The dominant method for converting those stablecoins to local currency has been peer-to-peer trading, which comes with well-documented drawbacks: counterparty fraud, settlement delays, escrow disputes, and the absence of any guarantee that funds arrive at all. Cryptonia was designed to remove those risks from the off-ramp equation entirely.

Founding and Background

The platform was founded by Oluwasanmi Timilehin, who spent four years as an over-the-counter crypto trader starting in 2021, a period that coincided with the Central Bank of Nigeria's ban on banks handling crypto transactions. He processed more than $5 million in personal OTC volume during that period before assembling a development team to formalize the service. The CBN lifted its crypto restrictions in December 2023, creating the regulatory opening for a licensed exchange to operate. Cryptonia launched publicly in January 2025 and is incorporated as Evolution Consultancy Limited.

Core Mechanism

Cryptonia operates as a non-custodial exchange, meaning users never relinquish control of their assets to the platform during a transaction. The conversion flow is four steps: a user opens the app, selects the stablecoin and network they want to send, receives a unique deposit wallet address generated for that transaction, and sends funds from their own wallet. Once the blockchain confirms the inbound transfer — which on Solana can happen within seconds — the platform credits the Naira equivalent directly to the user's linked Nigerian bank account. The payout settles in under 10 seconds and carries no transfer fee. Users can convert up to $500 without providing a Bank Verification Number, reducing the onboarding barrier for new or lower-volume users. A dedicated OTC desk handles larger institutional and high-net-worth trades separately.

Supported Networks and Solana Integration

Cryptonia supports stablecoin transfers across multiple blockchains: Ethereum (ERC-20), Binance Smart Chain (BEP-20), Solana, Tron, and Algorand. Solana has emerged as the platform's dominant chain: by April 2025, Solana accounted for 40% of monthly transaction volume and had surpassed Tron as the most-utilized network on the platform, a shift the team attributed to Solana's transaction speed and lower fees relative to alternatives.

The platform has a direct connection to the Solana ecosystem through Superteam Nigeria, which awarded Cryptonia a $3,000 USDC grant. The official Solana account on X publicly highlighted Cryptonia in 2025, describing it as "a non-custodial stablecoin exchange letting users buy and sell USDC/USDT with Naira in under 10 seconds" that "minimize[s] the fraud and delay risks common in P2P markets." Cryptonia is also registered as a Circle Alliance partner, supporting USDC on both Solana and Algorand as part of Circle's global financial inclusion network.

Key Features

The app is available on Android and iOS and is designed for accessibility across both casual users and professional traders. Key characteristics include:

  • Non-custodial transactions: Users hold their keys until the moment of conversion; the platform never takes custody of incoming funds before executing the swap.
  • Sub-10-second payouts: Naira lands in the user's bank account within seconds of blockchain confirmation.
  • No transfer fees: The platform earns on spread rather than charging outbound transfer fees.
  • Multi-chain deposits: Users can send from any supported network without switching wallets.
  • OTC desk: Institutional and large-volume clients access a separate trading desk for volume above retail limits.
  • Transparent rates: The platform displays rates before users commit to a conversion.

Tokens and Assets

Cryptonia does not issue a native protocol token. The platform facilitates conversion between two externally issued stablecoins — USDC (issued by Circle) and USDT (issued by Tether) — and Nigerian Naira settled to local bank accounts. There is no governance token, liquidity mining program, or platform-specific asset associated with the service.

Security and Compliance

Cryptonia partners with Blockradar (also referred to as Block Radar), a crypto wallet management platform, for the underlying wallet infrastructure that powers its non-custodial deposit address generation. The Circle Alliance membership, confirmed January 29, 2025, places Cryptonia within Circle's network of regulated and vetted USDC-supporting businesses globally. The platform maintains user verification protocols aligned with Nigerian digital asset regulations, including the tiered BVN requirement that activates above the $500 transaction threshold.

The team has publicly disclosed plans to pursue licensing with Nigeria's Securities and Exchange Commission as part of its regulatory roadmap.

Traction and Growth

Cryptonia's trajectory since its January 2025 launch has been documented by multiple Nigerian fintech publications. Key milestones sourced from web3nigeria.org and the Substack deep-dive:

  • $2.5 million in annual transaction volume during 2024 (pre-public-launch OTC period)
  • Crossed $5 million in total platform trades by March 2025
  • Monthly volume of approximately $300,000 in April 2025, with 40% processed on Solana
  • More than 2,000 registered app users as of May 2025
  • Autorush partnership announced March 2025, enabling USDC/USDT payments for vehicle purchases in Nigeria
  • Cryptonia Corps ambassador program launched April 2025, extending the platform's reach across Nigeria and broader Africa

Ecosystem Context

Cryptonia operates at the intersection of stablecoin infrastructure and African financial access. Nigeria's inflation environment, combined with its large diaspora remittance flows and a rapidly growing population of Web3 freelancers receiving international payments in crypto, creates sustained demand for a fast, low-cost, non-custodial off-ramp. By building on Solana — and benefiting from the ecosystem support of Superteam Nigeria and Circle's global partner network — Cryptonia positions itself as part of the broader effort to make dollar-denominated stablecoins practically usable for everyday Nigerians, rather than a tool reserved for technically sophisticated traders navigating P2P risk.
