CoolWallet

CoolWallet

CoolWallet is a non-custodial hardware wallet platform built by Taipei-based CoolBitX, a company that has focused on blockchain security since its founding in 2014. With over 300,000 users and no reported hacking incidents in its history, CoolWallet has carved out a distinct position in the cold storage market through a single defining design choice: a credit-card-sized form factor that fits in a standard wallet, paired with encrypted Bluetooth connectivity for mobile-first management.

Company and Origins

CoolBitX was founded in 2014 in Taipei, Taiwan, a city whose semiconductor heritage gives the company access to some of the world's most advanced chip manufacturing. The first CoolWallet hardware device shipped in 2016. The company has since raised over $16 million in funding, including a Series B round led by Japan's SBI VC, and earned international recognition — CoolBitX founder and CEO Michael Ou received a presidential award from Taiwan President Tsai Ing-Wen as part of the government's "NEXT BIG" startup initiative. CoolBitX also holds ISO/IEC 27001 certification for information security management.

Product Lineup

CoolWallet currently markets three hardware devices alongside its companion mobile application:

CoolWallet Pro is the flagship device. It carries a CC EAL6+ certified secure element — a higher certification grade than the EAL5 chips found in some competing hardware wallets — and communicates with the CoolWallet App over AES-256 encrypted Bluetooth. The Pro features an e-ink display for transaction verification and a physical confirmation button, so users can review and approve transactions on the device itself before anything leaves the secure element. The card measures 85.6mm × 53.98mm × 0.8mm — exactly credit-card dimensions — and is rated as both waterproof and tamper-proof. Its rechargeable lithium-ion battery lasts approximately two weeks under normal usage.

CoolWallet Go is the entry-level option and requires no battery, relying on NFC for power and communication. It supports over 35 blockchains, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Solana, and Toncoin, along with custom EVM-compatible chains that users can add manually.

CoolWallet S is an older-generation device still offered for long-term cold storage use cases.

All three devices are managed through the CoolWallet App, available on iOS and Android, which serves as a unified interface for portfolio management, staking, token swaps, Web3 browsing, and WalletConnect integration for connecting to desktop decentralized applications.

Security Architecture

CoolWallet's security model centers on keeping private keys inside the certified secure element at all times. Keys are generated directly on the device and never transmitted over Bluetooth or any network connection — only signed transaction data leaves the card. The Bluetooth link uses AES-256 encryption, and the connection requires a pairing password. After five incorrect password attempts the device locks. The 10-meter Bluetooth range limit reduces the window for unauthorized proximity-based attacks.

The EAL6+ certification on the Pro model is notable because CC (Common Criteria) EAL6 represents near-formal verification of security properties, typically used in smartcards and SIM chips in high-assurance environments. For consumer crypto hardware this is among the highest ratings commercially available.

Solana Support

CoolWallet Pro added Solana support in August 2022, positioning itself explicitly as a cold storage alternative to hot wallets in the wake of the Slope wallet exploit that affected thousands of Solana users that month. The hardware wallet supports native SOL storage and management, SPL token custody, and SOL staking through the CoolWallet App — allowing users to delegate stake directly from cold storage while keeping private keys offline.

In addition to staking SOL, the platform supports staking of BTC, ETH, DOT, ATOM, TRX, USDT, USDC, and other assets through the same cold-storage-with-staking model. For Solana users who want the liquidity and yield of active staking without the exposure of a hot wallet, this integration represents a meaningful option.

The CoolWallet App's Trends page — updated in August 2026 with app version 4.30.0 — lets users filter assets by type (Trending, RWA, tokenized stocks, DeFi, meme) and sort by volume or market cap, with chart popups accessible directly from the list.

Multi-Chain Breadth

Beyond Solana, CoolWallet Pro and Go support 35+ mainnet blockchains and over 12,000 tokens. Token standards covered include ERC-20, BEP-20, TRC-20, SPL (Solana Program Library), Jetton (TON), and Sui tokens, as well as NFT standards ERC-721 and ERC-1155. WalletConnect integration extends the hardware wallet's reach to virtually any Web3 application that supports the protocol, bridging mobile cold storage with desktop dApp usage.

Recent Developments

CoolBitX has continued iterating the platform through 2025 and 2026. Notable updates include:

  • RLUSD support (May 2026): CoolWallet became one of the first hardware wallets to support Ripple's USD-pegged stablecoin on the XRP Ledger, including custody, management, and staking with auto-compounding rewards.
  • TRON Energy Rental (February 2026): An energy rental service for the TRON network was integrated directly into the platform.
  • Fiat ramp termination (June 2026): CoolWallet discontinued its built-in fiat on/off-ramp service, a common consolidation move as wallet providers focus on core custody features.
  • App Trends page redesign (August 2026): The market Trends page gained user-controlled filtering and sorting, along with inline chart expansion, in app version 4.30.0.

The company also responded publicly to a February 2025 Coldcard seed-generation firmware flaw that led to Bitcoin theft — publishing an analysis that highlighted CoolWallet's secure-element-based key generation as a distinguishing safety advantage.

Positioning

CoolWallet targets users who want hardware-level security without carrying a USB device or plugging into a computer. Its Bluetooth-and-mobile workflow suits active crypto users who stake, swap, and interact with dApps regularly rather than purely long-term cold storage holders. The credit-card form factor is a genuine differentiator — the device fits in the same physical location as the other cards whose value it is protecting.

For Solana holders specifically, the combination of SPL token support, direct SOL staking from cold storage, and WalletConnect compatibility for Solana dApps makes CoolWallet a functional option in a market where most hardware wallets still treat Solana as a secondary chain. The EAL6+ secure element and AES-256 Bluetooth encryption provide a security baseline that compares favorably with other consumer hardware wallets at similar or higher price points.
