CoinMENA Exchange
CoinMENA Exchange is a centralised platform offering spot and OTC trading of 50+ cryptocurrencies with local fiat deposits and withdrawals.
CoinMENA
CoinMENA is a regulated cryptocurrency exchange headquartered in Manama, Bahrain, built specifically for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Founded in 2021 by Dina Sam'an, Talal Tabbaa, and Yazan Barghuthi, the platform was designed to address a consistent gap in regional crypto markets: the lack of a locally licensed, locally denominated, and locally supported on-ramp and off-ramp for digital assets.
The platform's positioning centers on compliance first. When it launched, regulated crypto access in MENA was thin — most users routed through offshore platforms without local licensing, local currency rails, or Arabic-language support. CoinMENA entered with a Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) Category-3 crypto asset service provider license, becoming the first Sharia'a-compliant cryptocurrency exchange to receive CBB authorization. That Sharia-compliance certification broadened its addressable market across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), where a meaningful proportion of retail users seek financial products that satisfy Islamic finance principles.
Platform and Features
CoinMENA's core offering is a consumer-grade exchange where users can buy, sell, send, and receive digital assets. The platform supports over 80 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, USDT, and USDC, with trades available in eight local fiat currencies: Bahraini dinar (BHD), UAE dirham (AED), Saudi riyal (SAR), US dollar (USD), Kuwaiti dinar (KWD), Omani rial (OMR), Qatari riyal (QAR), and Egyptian pound (EGP).
Users can fund accounts via bank transfer or credit and debit card, and can withdraw directly to local bank accounts — a feature that matters significantly in markets where crypto-to-fiat conversion has historically required offshore routing. The platform offers spot trading, limit orders, and an over-the-counter (OTC) desk for larger transactions. CoinMENA provides 24/7 multilingual customer support, reflecting the linguistic diversity of its target markets.
As of 2025, CoinMENA reported over 1.5 million registered users, more than $5 billion in total transactions processed, and services available across 45+ countries.
Regulatory Expansion
Regulatory accumulation has been central to CoinMENA's growth strategy. The CBB license gave the platform a foundation to serve GCC markets. In January 2022, the company obtained a second cryptocurrency license from a European Union regulatory authority, which it noted would support expansion into additional jurisdictions and the development of new crypto financial services on Web3 infrastructure.
The most significant regulatory milestone came in December 2023, when Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) granted CoinMENA FZE a full VASP license for broker-dealer services. At the time, only a handful of firms held a full VARA license — CoinMENA was among the earliest to clear the process after receiving provisional approval roughly a year prior. The Dubai license unlocked the ability to serve retail and institutional customers with AED-denominated deposits and withdrawals, reducing foreign exchange friction and lowering costs for UAE-based users. To support this expansion, CoinMENA partnered with digital banking platform Zand for AED banking infrastructure.
This multi-license architecture — Bahrain CBB, VARA Dubai, and EU — made CoinMENA one of the few MENA-based exchanges holding active regulatory authorizations across multiple high-growth crypto jurisdictions simultaneously.
Funding and Growth Model
CoinMENA raised a $9.5 million seed round in November 2021 from BECO Capital, Kenetic, Arab Bank Switzerland, Bunat Ventures, Alameda Research, Rua Growth Fund, and Girnas Capital, along with select angel investors. The round reflected early institutional confidence in MENA's regulated crypto market and the team's licensing-led approach. Over its operating life, CoinMENA raised approximately $20 million total without completing a Series A, never exceeding a pre-acquisition valuation of $100 million.
Co-founder Talal Tabbaa has attributed CoinMENA's survival and eventual exit value to capital discipline. The company calculated its P&L daily, avoided mass layoffs, and declined to horizontally expand into products outside its core exchange offering. That focus — regulatory access, clean balance sheet, and controlled execution — positioned it as an acquisition target at a premium when the regional crypto market matured.
Acquisition by Paribu
In December 2025, CoinMENA was acquired by Paribu, one of Turkey's largest cryptocurrency exchanges, in a transaction valued at up to $240 million. The deal represented MENA crypto's largest acquisition by an outside operator and Paribu's first cross-border crypto deal. All investors received cash exits; employees received approximately 18% of the deal through the company's ESOP allocation.
Through the acquisition, Paribu gained access to CoinMENA's CBB and VARA licenses, its user base of 1.5 million across 45+ countries, and its banking relationships spanning the Gulf region. The deal gave Paribu a multi-jurisdiction regulated footprint it would have taken years to build independently.
CoinMENA continues to operate under its own brand and leadership. Talal Tabbaa remains as CEO and has stated that he is "more motivated than ever," with expectations that Paribu's acquisition will be followed by broader consolidation across MENA's regulated fintech and payment services sector. For users, operations remain unchanged.
Market Context
CoinMENA's trajectory reflects the MENA crypto market's evolution from an unregulated fringe activity to a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction regulated industry. Bahrain positioned itself as the GCC's first serious crypto regulatory environment through CBB's licensing framework; Dubai followed with VARA; Saudi Arabia and others have moved toward their own frameworks. CoinMENA built ahead of this curve, and its acquisition by a major non-MENA exchange at a $240 million valuation confirmed that regulatory-first positioning in the region commands meaningful strategic premiums.
The $240 million exit on roughly $20 million in capital raised — achieved without venture-scale dilution or a Series A — has been cited in regional fintech circles as evidence that focused, regulated execution can produce outsized outcomes even without aggressive funding rounds or geographic sprawl.
