About

CoinMarketCap

CoinMarketCap is the most widely cited cryptocurrency market data platform in existence. Founded in May 2013 by IT programmer Brandon Chez in New York City, it began as a simple price aggregator and has expanded over more than a decade into a comprehensive data infrastructure layer for the global crypto industry. It is commonly referenced by major financial outlets including Forbes, Bloomberg, and CNBC, and has been used by U.S. government agencies in crypto-related research. In April 2020, Binance acquired CoinMarketCap in a deal rumored to be worth approximately $400 million. Chez stepped down following the acquisition, with the platform continuing to operate as a nominally independent subsidiary.

The Problem It Solves

Cryptocurrency markets are fragmented across hundreds of centralized exchanges, thousands of decentralized protocols, and millions of trading pairs. Before platforms like CoinMarketCap existed, there was no single authoritative reference for where an asset traded, at what price, or with what liquidity. CoinMarketCap solved this by aggregating price feeds from global exchanges, normalizing them into a single USD-denominated view, and publishing standardized market capitalization rankings that gave investors and media a shared vocabulary for comparing digital assets.

Its mission—to "accelerate the crypto revolution by organizing the world's crypto intelligence and making it easily accessible to all"—reflects a deliberate positioning as neutral infrastructure rather than an active market participant. The platform explicitly does not offer investment advice, positioning every data point as informational.

How It Works

CoinMarketCap ingests price and volume data from centralized exchanges across the globe, converting quoted prices into USD and calculating key derived metrics: market capitalization (price multiplied by circulating supply), fully diluted valuation, 24-hour trading volume, and percentage changes over various time windows. These metrics update every minute on most service tiers.

The platform's ranking system uses a combination of market cap and volume figures to order assets. Exchanges themselves are also ranked by reported and adjusted volume, with CoinMarketCap applying its own liquidity scoring to filter wash trading. As of 2025, the platform tracked over 53 million cryptocurrencies and monitored approximately two million trading pairs across nearly 1,000 exchanges.

Key Products and Features

Market Data Website and Apps: The core product is the website and its iOS and Android apps, which present live price tables, individual asset pages with candlestick charts, and global market statistics including total market capitalization and Bitcoin dominance. Every tracked cryptocurrency has a dedicated page with historical OHLCV data, tokenomics disclosures, links to official sources, and community sentiment indicators.

Professional API: CoinMarketCap's API, launched publicly in 2016 and rebuilt as a professional service in 2019, is used by exchanges, portfolio apps, analytics platforms, and institutional trading desks. It provides access to 14 years of historical data across 51 million tracked assets from 947+ exchanges, processing more than one billion API calls per month. Access tiers run from a free keyless public API (no registration required, suitable for prototyping) through paid commercial and enterprise plans that unlock higher rate limits, longer historical windows, and premium endpoints. In 2025, the platform added AI Agent Hub integration and support for x402, a pay-per-request protocol enabling micropayment-gated API access.

DexScan: Launched in 2022-2023, DexScan is CoinMarketCap's on-chain DEX screener. Where the core platform focuses on centralized exchange data, DexScan tracks decentralized exchanges at the pool and pair level. It monitors more than 50 blockchain networks including Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, Avalanche, and Solana across more than 100 DEXs, surfacing real-time liquidity, 24-hour volume, transaction counts, and FDV for individual pairs. Each pool entry includes a Go+ security scan that flags contract risks and honeypot indicators. Discovery features include trending pairs ranked by pageviews and volume, top gainers and losers over 24-hour windows, and customizable price alerts delivered via Telegram or mobile push notifications.

Portfolio and Watchlist Tools: Registered users can build personal watchlists and track portfolio performance across multiple assets. These tools are free and integrated directly into the main website and apps.

CMC Academy: An educational hub covering crypto fundamentals, DeFi mechanics, project deep-dives, and market commentary. Academy content includes long-form explainers, glossary entries, and timely articles about ecosystem developments across major chains.

Derivatives Dashboard: A dedicated section for perpetual and futures market data, covering open interest, funding rates, and liquidation events across major derivatives venues.

Fit in the Solana Ecosystem

CoinMarketCap serves as the primary reference point for Solana market data for the broader crypto public. The Solana (SOL) token page is among the platform's most-visited, providing live price charts, historical data going back to SOL's 2020 launch, market cap rankings, and links to official project resources.

DexScan's inclusion of Solana means that liquidity pools and trading pairs on Solana DEXs including Raydium, Orca, Meteora, and others are tracked and surfaced alongside pools from Ethereum and BNB Chain. For traders and researchers exploring Solana's DeFi ecosystem, DexScan provides a cross-chain benchmark: it is possible to compare liquidity and volume for a given Solana pair directly against equivalent pairs on other networks.

CMC Academy also covers Solana extensively through news articles, prediction roundups, and protocol deep-dives. In early 2026, Academy coverage addressed topics including the Alpenglow consensus upgrade (targeting sub-200ms finality), growth in Solana ETF assets surpassing $1 billion in inflows, real-world asset tokenization activity on Solana, and memecoin-driven transaction volume surges.

The platform's API is used by many projects that build data products across multiple chains; any Solana protocol seeking standard market data integration will typically list on CoinMarketCap as a distribution channel to reach the platform's hundreds of millions of monthly users.

Scale and Credibility

At peak activity CoinMarketCap reported 13.2 billion annual page views (2021) and more than 340 million monthly visitors (June 2022). The platform has achieved ISO certifications for data management and operates globally across web, mobile, API, and newsletter channels. Its ranking methodology and data sourcing documentation are publicly available, and the platform has invested in formal data quality standards, including the formation of the DATA Alliance in 2019 to improve industry-wide exchange reporting practices.

As the default starting point for millions of retail and institutional participants entering the crypto market, CoinMarketCap occupies a foundational infrastructure role—one that extends across every chain it indexes, including Solana.
