Buddy Link

Buddy Link was an on-chain referral and attribution protocol built on Solana. Rather than relying on off-chain tracking systems prone to manipulation, Buddy Link placed the entire referral stack — user registration, attribution, reward accounting, and payout — directly on the Solana blockchain. Projects could integrate Buddy Link's composable smart contracts to create transparent, verifiable affiliate programs where referred users and referring wallets were linked on-chain and rewards flowed automatically.

The protocol was founded by Aidan Neil, who served as co-CEO, and made its public debut at Solana Breakpoint Amsterdam in November 2023. At launch, the team reported that a stealth rollout to a closed group of early users had already produced five live integrations, more than 2,000 linked wallets, over $100,000 in distributed rewards, and more than $1 million in marketplace volume attributable to the network. Those numbers positioned Buddy Link as one of the more traction-tested protocol launches at the conference.

How It Worked

Buddy Link's core primitive was a set of on-chain accounts that represented referral relationships. When a user joined a project through a referral link, an attribution record was written to Solana. This record was permanent, transparent, and composable — meaning other programs could read it and trigger conditional logic based on referral status.

Projects using the protocol could configure tiered reward structures, time-limited bonuses, and gamified milestone systems without writing custom referral logic from scratch. Buddy Link described its approach as treating referral programs the way DeFi treats financial primitives: as building blocks that any application developer could slot into their product.

The protocol's main on-chain program address is BUDDYtQp7Di1xfojiCSVDksiYLQx511DPdj2nbtG9Yu5. This program handles account creation, referral attribution, and the bookkeeping needed to trigger reward distributions. No native protocol token was ever launched; the referral rewards themselves were denominated in whatever asset the integrating project chose to use.

Notable Integration: Star Atlas Starpath

The most prominent Buddy Link integration was with Star Atlas, the large-scale Solana-based space strategy game. Star Atlas deployed Buddy Link to power its Starpath referral program, which allowed existing players to refer new users and earn a share of the resulting on-chain activity. The Starpath program offered percentage-based revenue sharing and was described by Star Atlas as the first-ever implementation of fully on-chain referrals in a web3 gaming context, with each referral relationship verifiable by anyone inspecting the chain.

The integration was notable because it demonstrated Buddy Link's capacity to handle high-complexity consumer applications — not just simple DeFi affiliate tracking, but multi-layered reward structures attached to an active gaming ecosystem with a large existing user base.

Buddy Link also powered referral infrastructure for Night Market, a composable NFT marketplace on Solana, showing that the protocol was not limited to gaming use cases.

Planned Roadmap (Never Delivered)

At the time of its Breakpoint launch, Buddy Link outlined several planned products:

• Buddy Connect and Profile: An open-source, gasless onboarding solution intended to let new users join Solana applications through a social referral layer, planned for 2024 release.
• Buddy App: A standalone mobile application planned for the Solana dApp Store, iOS, and Android in 2024.

Neither product reached public release based on available evidence.

Signs of Abandonment

Buddy Link's operational status deteriorated steadily throughout 2024 and into 2025. As of September 2026, the evidence of abandonment is unambiguous:

Website offline. The primary domain, buddy.link, returns an HTTP 404 error. This is not a temporary outage — the Vercel deployment backing the site was removed, indicating the hosting was deliberately discontinued rather than lapsing due to an oversight.

Documentation offline. The developer documentation at docs.buddy.link also returns a 404 error. Developers building on the protocol have no official reference material available.

GitHub activity stopped. The buddy-link GitHub organization hosts ten repositories. The most recently updated is buddy-docs, last touched on May 8, 2025. The next most recent, buddy-state, was last updated April 8, 2025. All other repositories show no activity after mid-2024 at the latest. No commits, issues, or releases have appeared since May 2025.

No social activity. The official X/Twitter account (@JoinBuddyLink) has not posted since early 2025. No blog posts, partnership announcements, or development updates have been published on any known channel.

No shutdown announcement. Despite the protocol's evident discontinuation, Buddy Link has made no public statement acknowledging the shutdown, releasing team members from obligations, deprecating the on-chain program, or advising any integrating projects on next steps.

Assessment

Buddy Link was a technically coherent attempt to build composable referral infrastructure as a Solana protocol primitive, and it attracted at least one high-profile integration in Star Atlas. The on-chain program itself remains deployed and functional at the contract level — no one has formally deprecated it — but the team that built and maintained the surrounding tooling, SDKs, documentation, and application layer appears to have dissolved or moved on without a public exit.

There is no active development, no reachable website, no current documentation, and no evidence that any new projects are being onboarded. The protocol should be treated as abandoned. Projects that integrated Buddy Link for referral tracking may still have functional on-chain attribution records, but they are operating without the support infrastructure the protocol's team once provided.
