Buddy Link
Buddy Link launched publicly at Solana Breakpoint 2023 in Amsterdam in November 2023, positioning itself as a B2B2C distribution platform built entirely on the Solana blockchain. Its core offering was a fully on-chain referral and attribution infrastructure — a protocol layer that any Solana project could integrate to deploy gamified referral programs without building custom smart contracts.
What Buddy Link Did
The platform operated as a cross-referral protocol connecting projects, influencers, affiliates, and community members. Projects could embed Buddy Link's referral infrastructure to track who brought in new users and pay out rewards in real time on-chain. Unlike off-chain affiliate platforms, all referral attribution and reward payments were handled transparently on Solana, making every payout verifiable and immediate.
Key features included:
- White-labeled referral systems: Projects could deploy branded referral programs using Buddy Link's composable on-chain programs, without writing or auditing new contracts.
- Instant on-chain payments: Referral rewards were distributed automatically when a qualifying action occurred — no manual processing or delayed payouts.
- Cross-referral protocol: Buddy Link facilitated referrals across multiple projects simultaneously, so a single user could earn rewards from several integrated protocols through one profile.
- Gamification tools: Loyalty programs, leaderboards, and reward multipliers could be layered on top of base referral mechanics to drive sustained engagement.
- Developer SDK: A TypeScript SDK (buddy-universal), a React package (buddy-react), and a Rust crate (buddylink-crate) let developers integrate the protocol with minimal code. The SDK abstracted interactions with the on-chain program at address BUDDYtQp7Di1xfojiCSVDksiYLQx511DPdj2nbtG9Yu5.
At its public launch, Buddy Link reported five protocol integrations, more than 2,000 linked user accounts, over $100,000 in distributed rewards, and more than $1 million in marketplace volume generated through its referral network.
Notable Integration: Star Atlas
The most prominent integration was with Star Atlas, the Solana-based space exploration strategy game. Star Atlas used Buddy Link to power its Starpath rewards program, which it described as "the first truly web3 recruitment system." The integration gave Star Atlas players automatically generated referral links tied to their in-game profiles. Referrers earned 25% of the net price on primary sales for the first 12 months per referred user, plus 25% of marketplace fees on secondary peer-to-peer sales. Referred users received a 10% discount on primary purchases for their first 90 days.
Star Atlas CEO Michael Wagner credited the partnership with delivering "more power and rewards to players," while Buddy Link co-founder Aidan Neil described the integration as a step toward a "more community-focused web3 world" through composable infrastructure.
Current Status
As of mid-2026, Buddy Link's website (buddy.link) and documentation site (docs.buddy.link) return Vercel deployment-not-found errors, indicating those deployments have been removed rather than experiencing a temporary outage. No social media activity has been recorded from the project's known accounts in recent months. GitHub repositories under the buddy-link organization show no commits since early-to-mid 2025. The platform appears to have ceased active operations, though the on-chain program deployed to Solana mainnet remains present on-chain.
