Bitstamp
Bitstamp is one of the longest-operating cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, founded in August 2011 by Slovenian entrepreneurs Nejc Kodrič and Damijan Merlak as a European-focused alternative to the then-dominant Mt. Gox. Originally headquartered in Slovenia, the company relocated to the UK in 2013 and then to Luxembourg in 2016, where it remains registered today. In June 2025, Robinhood Markets completed a $200 million acquisition of Bitstamp, bringing it under a publicly traded US financial services company while preserving the Bitstamp brand under the name Bitstamp by Robinhood.
How It Works
Bitstamp operates as a centralized, custodial spot exchange. Users create accounts, complete KYC verification, and deposit fiat or crypto to begin trading. The platform offers two primary trading interfaces: a Quick Buy/Sell/Convert flow designed for straightforward purchases, and the Tradeview Pro interface that exposes full order books, market depth, TradingView-integrated charting, and order types including market, limit, stop, and stop-limit orders. Both web and mobile apps maintain near-feature parity. A REST and WebSocket API is also available for algorithmic traders and institutional integrations.
The fee model follows a maker-taker structure with tiered discounts based on 30-day trading volume. Tighter effective costs come with limit orders placed via bank transfer rather than instant-purchase flows, which carry additional spread.
Key Features
Bitstamp lists approximately 100 to 115 assets across spot markets, with a deliberately curated selection favoring established assets over long-tail tokens. The core catalog includes Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, USDC, and Tether, among others.
Bitstamp Earn is the platform's staking program, allowing eligible users to accrue rewards on supported assets. Staking is unavailable to residents of the US, Canada, Japan, and Singapore. Earned rewards appear in the account balance and compound automatically if the asset remains staked.
For eligible EU users, Bitstamp Financial Services offers multi-asset perpetual futures covering commodities, foreign exchange, equity indices, and crypto from a single capital pool. This positions it as a venue for strategies that cross asset classes without requiring multiple platform accounts.
On the institutional side, Bitstamp added OMS and EMS connectivity through integrations with CoinRoutes, Talos, and Wyden, enabling institutional clients to route orders through Bitstamp's liquidity from platforms they already operate. The API supports full programmatic access to order management, account data, and market feeds.
In September 2025, Bitstamp added the Solana network as a supported rail for USDC transfers, joining Ethereum, Stellar, Optimism, Polygon, Avalanche, and Arbitrum. This allows users to move USDC to and from the platform faster and at lower cost than legacy rails.
Security and Custody
Bitstamp stores 95% of all customer crypto assets in cold, offline storage. The remaining balance is kept in a multisignature hot wallet to cover operational withdrawals. Customer funds are held 1:1 through qualified custodians including BitGo and Copper, with fiat deposits held in accounts at regulated banking institutions.
The platform has been audited annually by a Big Four accounting firm since 2016. These audits reconcile exchange records against the holdings of independent third-party custodians. Bitstamp's internal audit team repeats the same reconciliation weekly. The exchange holds ISO/IEC 27001 certification for information security management and SOC 2 Type 2 certification for operational controls, both subject to annual renewal.
Bitstamp does not currently offer user-verifiable cryptographic proof-of-reserves, meaning users rely on the third-party audit program and regulatory oversight rather than on-chain attestation for reserve verification.
The exchange's history includes a significant security incident in January 2015 when a breach resulted in the theft of approximately 19,000 BTC. The platform halted operations for roughly one week and subsequently rebuilt its security infrastructure. There have been no comparable incidents since.
Regulatory Standing
Bitstamp holds one of the most comprehensive regulatory profiles of any crypto exchange. In May 2025, Luxembourg's Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF) granted Bitstamp a Crypto Asset Service Provider (CASP) license under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation. This license covers platform operation, order execution on behalf of clients, and custody of crypto assets. Paired with the European Passport mechanism, it authorizes Bitstamp to offer these services across all EU and EEA member states without requiring separate country-level licenses.
Before MiCA, Bitstamp had already obtained a MiFID-compliant license to operate a Multilateral Trading Facility and held EU payment institution status dating to 2016. In February 2026, it added a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) registration in the British Virgin Islands.
Independent benchmarks have recognized Bitstamp's performance: Kaiko ranked it second overall in its Q1 2026 exchange quality benchmark, and CoinDesk assigned it an AA grade for the tenth consecutive period as of November 2025.
Solana Ecosystem Fit
Bitstamp's connection to the Solana ecosystem is primarily as a fiat and institutional on-ramp. SOL is available as a spot asset for purchase, sale, and conversion directly through the platform's web and mobile interfaces. For eligible users, SOL is also available through Bitstamp Earn for staking rewards. The September 2025 addition of the Solana network as a USDC transfer rail gives users a fast, low-cost path to move stablecoins between Bitstamp and Solana-based protocols without routing through Ethereum.
For Solana projects and protocols seeking institutional liquidity or fiat settlement infrastructure, Bitstamp's regulated status across the EU and EEA under MiCA, combined with its institutional OMS and EMS integrations, makes it a relevant venue. Its position under Robinhood provides additional distribution reach among retail users unfamiliar with dedicated crypto-native platforms.
Bitstamp is not a Solana-native product and does not integrate on-chain with the Solana ecosystem. It provides centralized access to SOL and uses the Solana network as a transfer layer for USDC, rather than participating in Solana's DeFi protocols, validator set, or on-chain liquidity infrastructure.
