Waimea Valley on Oahu's North Shore spans 1,800 acres, contains more than 5,000 plant species, and draws around 1,200 visitors daily to a 45-foot waterfall at the end of a three-quarter mile trail, according to Helium's blog. A conservation easement held by a Native Hawaiian nonprofit governs what infrastructure can enter the property. No traditional wireless carrier had found the site economically feasible to serve.

Helium Network HNT$0.754+105.9% Helium Network addressed that through Tasa Hawai'i, a two-person operation run by network engineer Viktor Savchenko and logistics lead William Todd. They deployed 14 Helium Plus access points along the valley trail, and over the following 30 days averaged 1,206 devices per day connected to the network, according to Helium's official blog post published today.

14 Helium Plus Access Points and 802.11r Roaming Across Waimea Valley

The deployment covers the full three-quarter mile stretch from the visitor center to the waterfall. Savchenko built in 802.11r fast transition support, enabling seamless Wi-Fi handoffs between access points as visitors move along the trail without connection drops. He described seamless roaming as "very important to have on such a stretch of the property," per the Helium blog.

The initial build took approximately three months, per Helium. Physical installation required operating after visitor hours, sometimes past midnight, to avoid disrupting the botanical garden. Where terrain allowed it, the team reused existing underground conduit, some of it approximately 30 years old. Above-ground cabling filled the gaps. The conservation easement imposed strict constraints on permanent construction, and the deployment did not disturb the plant collection.

Why No Traditional Carrier Had Served Waimea Valley

Standard carrier deployments are evaluated against expected subscriber revenue in a defined coverage area. A 1,800-acre conservation property with visiting-hour traffic patterns, strict ecological constraints, and a nonprofit easement holder does not meet the return threshold for a commercial tower installation. No major carrier had deployed coverage there before Tasa Hawai'i.

The Helium Network model inverts that calculus. A community deployer funds and installs the infrastructure. The network compensates that deployer with MOBILE MOBILE tokens for verified coverage. Lower overhead, token-denominated compensation, and a two-person operational structure let Tasa Hawai'i serve a site that a carrier's economics could not justify.

The 1,206 daily connection average across a 30-day period provides the utilization data. Waimea Valley receives consistent traffic from visitors who have no alternative coverage, and the Helium Plus deployment met it.

MOBILE Token Rewards and the HNT Emission Structure

Helium Plus access point deployers earn MOBILE as their primary compensation for providing verified wireless coverage. HNT HNT, the Helium Network's parent governance and utility token, sits above MOBILE in the protocol's token hierarchy, with MOBILE issuance backed by HNT's emission schedule.

Helium has been actively refining how those MOBILE rewards are distributed. A proposed update published in August, HIP-150, would introduce location multipliers of up to 5x and an 80% pay floor for mobile deployers. Conservation areas and underserved locations with real demand and no carrier competition are the deployment profiles HIP-150's multipliers target most heavily, though the proposal has not yet been formally ratified.

Savchenko previously published a technical guide to MikroTik hardware conversion for Helium deployments, a resource used by others entering the deployer ecosystem. Waimea Valley is a concrete test of the community infrastructure model: a constrained location, a two-person team, real visitor traffic, and a documented 30-day connection count.
