Constellation Energy Defies Utility Slump on Nuclear Strength and AI Demand
Constellation Energy (CEG) gained more than 5% in August 2026 while the broader utilities sector fell 5.18% โ making utilities the only S&P 500 sector with year-to-date losses for the period. The divergence highlights CEG's structural advantage as the operator of the largest nuclear reactor fleet in the United States.
The company raised its full-year adjusted operating earnings guidance to $11.50โ$12.50 per share during Q2 earnings, a $0.50 increase, driven by rising demand from AI data centers that need reliable clean baseload power. During the quarter CEG secured 920 MW of new nuclear power purchase agreements with contract terms of 15โ20 years, locking in long-horizon revenue at a time when most utilities face yield-related headwinds.
CEG also filed applications to extend operating licenses for its Ginna Clean Energy Center and Nine Mile Point Unit 1 reactors through 2049, providing capacity growth without the capital costs of new construction. The recently completed Calpine acquisition added 22 GW of natural gas and geothermal generation and is expected to contribute roughly $2 per share in adjusted earnings accretion.
The key risk is concentration in AI-driven electricity demand: if enterprise AI capital spending decelerates, the premium embedded in CEG's long-term contracts and license extension economics could compress. Rising Treasury yields also weighed on the sector through August, though CEG's operational differentiation allowed it to absorb that pressure better than peers.
Hedge funds held roughly $2.7 billion in CEG at the end of Q2 2026, down slightly from the prior quarter, suggesting some portfolio trimming even as the fundamental thesis around nuclear baseload for AI infrastructure remains intact.
