Wagmi

Concentrated liquidity optimization and oracle-free leverage trading across EVM chains

About

Wagmi

Wagmi (wagmi.com) is a multi-chain decentralized finance protocol that emerged from Popsicle Finance, a pioneer in cross-chain liquidity provision. The project rebranded and expanded its scope to deliver two primary products: a concentrated liquidity optimizer called GMI and an oracle-free leverage trading system called Wagmi Leverage. Both products are designed for users of Uniswap V3-style concentrated liquidity markets, addressing two persistent pain points — passive LP positions drifting out of range and the absence of leverage without forced price-based liquidation.

GMI: The Concentrated Liquidity Concentrator

The GMI mechanism is a multi-position concentrator that manages and rebalances V3 liquidity positions on behalf of liquidity providers. Rather than requiring LPs to manually monitor their price ranges and recenter positions when markets move, GMI automates the process. The system analyzes fee-generating conditions across pools and reallocates liquidity to positions most likely to earn. An mGMI variant layers a vesting mechanism on top, allowing entry into GMI positions with a graduated unlock into WAGMI governance tokens.

For liquidity providers, the practical benefit is continuous yield generation even when individual positions would otherwise go idle out of range. The concentrator logic monitors utilization and executes rebalancing without user intervention, reducing the operational burden that has historically made concentrated liquidity unattractive for passive participants.

Wagmi Leverage: Borrowing Without Liquidation Risk

The more distinctive product is Wagmi Leverage, a protocol that allows traders to take leveraged positions on any trading pair without price-based liquidation. Most leverage protocols rely on price oracles and collateral ratios to trigger forced liquidations when positions move against traders. Wagmi Leverage replaces this model with a premium-payment system.

Traders borrow liquidity from LPs and pay a continuous premium to maintain their position. As long as a trader keeps paying premiums, their position remains open regardless of price movement. Liquidation only occurs if a trader stops paying. This design benefits both sides: LPs earn enhanced yield because their out-of-range or idle concentrated liquidity positions are lent to borrowers rather than sitting dormant, while traders avoid the sudden wipeout risk associated with price oracle feeds and collateral thresholds.

The leverage system is deployed in versions 1.5 and 2.0 across Kava, Metis, Base, IOTA EVM, zkSync Era, and Sonic. The codebase is licensed under the WAGMI Source Available License 1.0, with some components under GPL-2.0 or MIT. An audit folder in the public GitHub repository confirms that security reviews have been conducted on the smart contracts, though full audit reports have not been made prominently public.

Chain Deployments and TVL

Wagmi has been progressively deployed across multiple EVM networks. The protocol launched initially on zkSync Era, followed by Fantom Opera, then Kava EVM, Metis, and more recently IOTA EVM, Base, and Sonic. As of mid-2026, total value locked across all deployments is modest — approximately $860,000 distributed across Kava, Metis, and IOTA EVM, with smaller positions on other chains. The protocol does not operate on Solana; its entire architecture is built for EVM-compatible environments.

WAGMI Token and Tokenomics

The WAGMI token is an Ethereum-based utility and governance token (contract: 0x92CC36D66e9d739D50673d1f27929a371FB83a67). It grants holders the ability to participate in governance decisions and access protocol services. GMI and mGMI serve as the primary entry mechanisms into WAGMI token ownership, with mGMI providing a vested accumulation path.

The token reached an all-time high of $252.60 in February 2024 before a severe decline. As of July 2026, the token trades near $0.0004 with a circulating supply of approximately 1.39 billion tokens and a market cap under $600,000. Daily trading volume is minimal, reflecting the sharp reduction in speculative interest that followed the 2024 market peak.

Team and Origins

Wagmi was co-founded by Ian Bentley and Scott Herman, who previously operated Popsicle Finance, a multi-chain liquidity protocol that also pursued concentrated liquidity strategies across chains. The transition to the Wagmi brand reflected a broader product expansion beyond Popsicle Finance's original mandate.

The development organization operates under the GitHub handle RealWagmi, which hosts 28 or more repositories including Solidity contracts for the leverage system, TypeScript SDKs, integration guides, and a companion platform called HeyAnon — an AI-integrated DeFi interaction layer built alongside the main protocol. The RealWagmi GitHub recorded commits as recently as March 2026, indicating continued development activity despite the token's sharply reduced market presence.

Ecosystem Context

Wagmi is not a Solana-native protocol. Its smart contract architecture uses Solidity for EVM-compatible blockchains. The term "WAGMI" — shorthand in crypto culture for "We're All Gonna Make It" — has led to unrelated meme tokens on Solana and other chains sharing the name, but these have no connection to wagmi.com or the RealWagmi organization.

Within the multi-chain EVM DeFi landscape, Wagmi occupies a niche between passive liquidity aggregators and active trading protocols. The oracle-free leverage mechanism is a genuine technical differentiation from most perpetuals platforms, eliminating the systemic risk of oracle manipulation or failure that has caused large-scale liquidation events on other protocols. The GMI concentrator addresses a real inefficiency in how concentrated liquidity positions are managed by retail users unfamiliar with active range management. The challenge the project faces in 2026 is one of traction: total TVL remains small and the WAGMI token has declined sharply, but the underlying protocol continues to operate across its deployed chains with active code maintenance.
