Termina

Termina is a Solana scaling infrastructure platform built by Nitro Labs Inc. that positions itself as "the first SVM cloud platform." It enables developers to deploy custom blockspace — referred to internally as "network extensions" — on top of or alongside the Solana mainnet without sacrificing Solana's native composability, liquidity, or ecosystem reach.

What Problem Termina Solves

Solana mainnet is a shared, global execution environment. During periods of congestion, time-sensitive applications such as high-frequency trading bots, real-time gaming sessions, and decentralized physical infrastructure (DePIN) networks compete for the same block space. Traditional Layer 2 solutions for other chains typically solve this by moving execution entirely off the base chain, but doing so fragments liquidity and breaks composability with the rest of the ecosystem.

Termina's approach — "network extensions" — is a Solana-specific framing that sits somewhere between Layer 2 rollups and dedicated appchains. According to founder Yiwen Gao, the term is intentional: network extensions are meant to encompass a wider range of solutions and end goals than Layer 2, allowing teams to deploy dedicated blockspace that settles natively on Solana L1 without cross-chain bridging overhead.

Core Architecture

Termina's infrastructure is composed of three modular, independently deployable components:

SVM Engine (SVM+): An extended version of the Solana Virtual Machine that powers customized block production, transaction sequencing, and state management. Teams can configure their own sequencing logic, compute limits, and fee structures within the SVM+ environment.

zkSVM Prover: A zero-knowledge proof system for SVM execution built on Succinct's SP1, a general-purpose zkVM. Rather than writing custom ZK circuits, the Nitro Labs team proved execution of the Solana eBPF interpreter over compiled bytecode. Technical challenges involved making nondeterministic Rust functions deterministic for ZK compatibility, running Agave's SVM single-threaded to eliminate caching requirements, and bridging SP1's 32-bit RISC-V architecture with Agave's 64-bit pointer requirements. In optimistic rollups, proofs are generated only when fraud is detected rather than per transaction — this brings the cost of proving 100 complex SPL transactions to approximately $5.32, paid by slashing fraudulent actors.

Data Anchor: A module announced in May 2025 that lets teams anchor verifiable off-chain data to Solana at significantly lower cost than full on-chain storage.

Teams can pick any combination of these modules independently, avoiding lock-in to Termina's full stack. Deployments settle on Solana L1, meaning network extensions inherit Solana's finality guarantees while running execution off the congested mainnet.

Primary Use Cases

Termina targets three verticals where dedicated, customizable blockspace creates meaningful advantages:

  • Trading and MEV: High-frequency trading strategies require precise control over sequencing and account locking. Dedicated blockspace eliminates competition with unrelated transactions.
  • Gaming: Real-time game state requires high-throughput, low-latency execution with deterministic finality. Termina's SVM+ allows game-specific block production logic.
  • DePIN: Decentralized physical infrastructure networks often need to process large volumes of sensor or device data. Data Anchor's low-cost on-chain storage and custom SVM execution make Termina's stack well-suited to these workloads.

Sovereign SDK Integration

In March 2025, Nitro Labs integrated Termina's Solana network extensions with Sovereign SDK — a modular framework for building rollups. This integration allows developers to combine Termina's SVM execution engine, zkSVM proving, and data storage as standalone components within a Sovereign rollup, giving builders a path to mix and match infrastructure from both stacks.

Team and Backing

Nitro Labs Inc. is a San Francisco-based startup founded by Yiwen Gao. The team includes veterans from SpaceX, Microsoft, Sei, Solana Labs, Lyft, RBC, and Optiver. As of the October 2024 funding announcement, the company had fewer than 10 employees.

In October 2024, Nitro Labs raised $4 million in seed funding structured as a SAFE with token warrants. Lemniscap led the round with participation from Animoca Ventures, Borderless Capital, Finality Capital, Race Capital, and No Limit Holdings. Angel investors came from Solana Foundation, Jump Crypto, and Spartan. Valuation was not disclosed.

At the time of the seed round, over 20 projects were building on Termina's private alpha devnet. The team targeted testnet by end of 2024 and mainnet in 2025. No token launch timeline was announced.

Partnerships

DIA Oracles became Termina's first SVM rollup integration partner, providing customizable oracle solutions covering over 20,000 assets for teams building rollups on Termina's infrastructure. The integration unlocks real-time off-chain data access for DeFi protocols, gaming platforms, and other applications deployed through Termina.

Solayer partnered with Termina to enable restaking of sUSD as sequencing collateral for SVM networks, adding an economic security layer to Termina-powered chains.

Tokens

No token has been launched. The October 2024 seed round included token warrants, indicating a token is anticipated, but Nitro Labs has not disclosed a timeline or tokenomics.
