PayAI
PayAI is a Solana-native payment infrastructure layer that enables AI agents, developers, and merchants to accept and make stablecoin micropayments through the x402 protocol. Founded in February 2025, the project sits at the intersection of autonomous AI and programmable money, providing settlement rails that allow software agents to transact with each other and with human-operated services without requiring traditional accounts, API keys, or payment intermediaries.
The x402 Protocol and PayAI's Facilitator Role
At its core, PayAI implements and extends the x402 payment standard — an HTTP-native protocol built around the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code. When a client, whether a human developer, an AI-powered application, or a fully autonomous agent, requests a paid API endpoint, the server returns a 402 response alongside pricing details and payment instructions. The client cryptographically signs a payment, and a facilitator — in most cases, PayAI — verifies that the client holds sufficient funds, submits the corresponding transaction to the blockchain, and confirms on-chain settlement before releasing the API response.
This flow eliminates the need for service providers to build and maintain their own blockchain payment infrastructure. Developers can integrate pay-per-request monetization in minutes using PayAI's SDKs across Python (httpx, requests, FastAPI, Flask), TypeScript (Axios, Fetch, Express, Hono, Next.js), and Go (Gin, net/http), making the protocol accessible across the dominant AI engineering stacks.
PayAI was the first x402 facilitator to launch on Solana and, as of early 2026, handles more than 90% of all verified x402 transactions on the network. Peak weekly transaction volumes reached 6.8 million during the week of December 22, 2025, and by February 2026, Solana represented approximately 88% of all x402 transactions across chains. The broader x402 ecosystem on Solana has grown to encompass over 25,000 unique wallets acting as service providers since October 2025, with more than 18,000 wallets operating as buyers.
Solana's structural characteristics — sub-second finality, transaction fees measured in fractions of a cent, and throughput capacity in the thousands of operations per second — make it well-suited to micropayment workloads, where economic viability depends on the cost of each settlement being negligible relative to the payment amount itself.
Architecture and Products
PayAI's primary product is its x402 facilitator service. Merchants and developers integrate the facilitator to accept payments ranging from one cent to one million dollars per transaction, with a documented success rate of 99.9% and sub-second confirmation. The protocol supports both traditional API monetization (per-request or per-usage billing for human developers calling AI services) and agent-to-agent coordination (autonomous AI systems contracting and paying one another for specialized capabilities).
The platform's underlying infrastructure draws on ElizaOS, an open-source framework for AI agents, along with libp2p for peer-to-peer networking and IPFS for decentralized storage. While PayAI is built and primarily settled on Solana, the x402 facilitator supports payments across multiple networks including Base, Polygon, Avalanche, Sei, and IoTeX. This multi-chain architecture allows service providers and agents to accept stablecoin payments from clients operating on different networks without requiring either party to manually bridge assets.
The PAYAI Token
PayAI's native utility token, PAYAI, is issued on Solana with a fixed total supply of one billion tokens. The project launched with 100% of supply liquid — there were no private sales, investor allocations, or vesting cliffs at genesis. The development team subsequently purchased 20% of the total supply at market price to establish a treasury allocated for operations, marketing, ecosystem rewards, and partnerships. Half of the treasury tokens were made immediately liquid; the remaining half vests linearly over one year.
Token locks are managed through third-party services: a six-month rolling lock via Streamflow Finance, a two-month rolling lock via Jupiter, and a Raydium LP lock via Streamflow for liquidity pool assets.
