About

Moonbirds

Moonbirds is a collection of 10,000 pixelated owl NFTs that launched on Ethereum in April 2022, originally created by Kevin Rose and his PROOF Collective — a curated membership club for serious NFT collectors and creatives. The project quickly became one of the most recognized names in the NFT space, combining distinctive generative artwork with community-driven perks, a novel on-chain staking mechanic, and an expanding ecosystem of digital collectibles. In January 2026, Moonbirds extended into the Solana ecosystem with the launch of BIRB, its native utility token.

Origins and the PROOF Collective

Moonbirds emerged from PROOF Collective, a members-only Web3 community co-founded by Kevin Rose, the internet entrepreneur best known for co-founding Digg. At launch, 2,000 Moonbirds were reserved for existing PROOF Collective pass holders, 7,875 were made available to the public through a whitelist raffle, and the remaining 125 were held by the PROOF team. The project's name and tagline — "it's super birbish" — reflect the playful, community-first ethos that shaped its early culture.

Each Moonbird is a 42x42-pixel owl rendered with a distinctive trait combination: bodies, beaks, eye types, headwear (from witch hats and monocles to astronaut helmets), and backgrounds. The collection grew beyond its original 10,000 NFTs with subsequent releases: Moonbirds Mythics serves as the official ecosystem expansion introducing new illustrated bird collectibles, while Oddities and Grails extended the brand further into digital art territory.

On-Chain Art Preservation

One of Moonbirds' technical distinguishing features is its In-Chain storage system. All visual layers composing the 10,000 Moonbirds — bodies, accessories, backgrounds — are compressed using DEFLATE and stored directly in Ethereum smart contracts, totaling approximately 24 million gas. An attribute registry records each bird's specific layer combination, secured via Merkle proof to prevent unauthorized modification. At render time, on-chain contracts assemble the correct layers and output each bird as a BMP image wrapped in a marketplace-compatible data URI, scaled up 16x from the native 42x42 resolution.

The practical implication: Moonbirds' artwork has no dependency on external servers, IPFS pinning, or third-party storage. PROOF Collective pass holders also receive access to an exclusive background overlay applied automatically to any nested Moonbird in their wallet.

Nesting: The Original Staking Mechanic

From launch, Moonbirds featured a staking mechanism called "nesting." Holders could nest their Moonbird to accumulate levels, unlock tiered community perks, and participate in exclusive events — but a nested bird cannot be sold or transferred while staked. This mechanism was designed to reward long-term holders and align community incentives with the project's development roadmap.

Ownership Journey: PROOF to Yuga Labs to Orange Cap Games

In February 2024, Yuga Labs — the creator of Bored Ape Yacht Club — acquired PROOF Collective in its entirety, taking over the Moonbirds, Mythics, Oddities, and Grails IP. Kevin Rose transitioned to an advisory role during and after the handover.

In May 2025, Yuga Labs sold the Moonbirds intellectual property to Orange Cap Games, a Web3 startup focused on translating NFT brands into consumer products and games. Spencer Gordon-Sand, CEO of Orange Cap Games, articulated an ambitious goal: to become the "Pop Mart of Web3," building a multi-billion-dollar consumer brand out of established NFT IP. Orange Cap Games was already generating approximately 8 million dollars in revenue annually — primarily through Vibes, a Pudgy Penguins-licensed trading card game — with projections of roughly 20 million dollars the following year, backed by distribution agreements with GTS and Star City Games and grading partnerships with CGC and PSA. Moonbirds IP is slated to enter the Vibes card game as the next major brand integration.

BIRB Token on Solana

Under Orange Cap Games, Moonbirds entered the Solana ecosystem with the launch of BIRB, its native utility token. The Token Generation Event took place on January 28, 2026. Rather than operating as a governance token, BIRB is designed as a brand and consumer activation token: rewarding long-term NFT holders, powering ecosystem incentives, and enabling on-chain consumer experiences — including micro-transactions, partnership activations, and future game integrations — that would be cost-prohibitive on Ethereum.

BIRB tokenomics are structured around a fixed total supply of 1 billion tokens with no inflation mechanism. The community allocation commands 65% of the supply, broken down as Holder Rewards (27%), Ecosystem Partner Expansion (12%), Value Chain Incentives (10%), Liquidity (8%), and Innovation Reserve (8%). Investors and advisors receive 25%, while the team holds 10%.

Solana was selected for its low transaction fees and high throughput, which Orange Cap Games views as essential infrastructure for consumer-scale Web3 applications where frequent, low-value interactions need to be economically viable.

Nesting 2.0

Alongside the BIRB launch, Moonbirds introduced Nesting 2.0 — an updated iteration of the original staking mechanic, adapted for the token era. Eligible holders of Moonbirds, Mythics, or Oddities NFTs can deposit their assets into the Nesting 2.0 protocol in exchange for a non-transferable Soulbound Token (SBT) that serves as a verifiable on-chain receipt. BIRB rewards are then distributed monthly on the 28th of each month over a 24-month vesting schedule.

The monthly cadence is a deliberate design choice: rather than enabling a single large claim that could create immediate sell pressure, Nesting 2.0 spreads distribution across two years. Holders who unnest their NFT before the cycle completes forfeit remaining scheduled claims.

Community and Current Ecosystem

Today, Moonbirds operates as a multi-layered brand ecosystem. Holders gain membership access to the community Discord, live Twitter Spaces, and exclusive art drops, with collaborative projects featuring prominent digital artists including XCOPY. A Talon points system lets active participants earn rewards redeemable for physical goods, experiences, and in-person events.

SBT-based badge campaigns — run in partnership with platforms such as Aster and Byreal — allow non-NFT-holders to engage with Moonbirds branding through collectible, non-transferable digital credentials. The combination of the established Ethereum NFT collection, the Solana-based BIRB token, and Orange Cap Games' push into physical consumer products and gaming positions Moonbirds as one of the more structurally diversified projects in the NFT landscape heading into 2026.
