About

Moonbirds

Moonbirds is a 10,000-piece pixel art owl NFT collection that launched on Ethereum in April 2022 and subsequently announced a native ecosystem token, BIRB, set to launch on the Solana blockchain. Originally conceived as a premium profile-picture (PFP) collection tied to an exclusive collector community, Moonbirds has cycled through dramatic market highs, ownership changes, and a brand revival — arriving in the Solana ecosystem through its token launch.

Origins and the PROOF Collective

Moonbirds was created by PROOF Collective, an invite-only community of 1,000 NFT collectors and artists led by Kevin Rose, a venture capitalist, podcast host, and serial entrepreneur known for founding Digg and several other technology ventures. The collection debuted on April 16, 2022 at a 2.5 ETH mint price, generating approximately $280 million in primary and secondary trading volume within its first weekend — at the time one of the most successful NFT launches ever recorded. Floor prices climbed as high as 40 ETH during the peak of the 2022 bull market.

Holding a Moonbirds NFT originally granted access to PROOF's private Discord community, early podcast releases, Parliament in-person meetups, and priority participation in future PROOF ecosystem projects. The collection positioned itself as a membership token for a curated collector network rather than purely a speculative digital artwork.

Nesting: On-Chain Staking Without Custody Transfer

Moonbirds introduced a distinctive staking mechanism called "nesting." Rather than sending NFTs to a third-party staking contract, holders lock their assets inside their own wallets, retaining full custody while earning tiered rewards based on how long the NFT has been continuously nested. Rewards were structured to favor long-term holders, with the team explicitly weighting benefits toward sustained participation. Holders who unnested their birds reset their tier progress. Rewards distributed through nesting included merchandise, exclusive community access, and future ecosystem benefits.

The CC0 Controversy

In August 2022, the project transitioned the Moonbirds IP to Creative Commons Zero (CC0) licensing, removing all copyright restrictions and allowing anyone — holders or not — to freely reproduce and commercialize the artwork. The move drew strong backlash from holders who had purchased under the expectation of exclusive commercial IP rights, contributing to community erosion as broader NFT market sentiment declined. Floor prices fell sharply throughout 2023, dropping below 1 ETH by late that year and eventually beneath the equivalent of $1,000 in dollar terms during 2024.

Ownership Changes: Yuga Labs and Orange Cap Games

In February 2024, Yuga Labs — the company behind Bored Ape Yacht Club — acquired PROOF Collective, absorbing the Moonbirds IP alongside other PROOF assets. Yuga Labs kept the collection largely inactive during its tenure. In May 2025, Yuga Labs sold Moonbirds to Orange Cap Games, a gaming and IP development studio led by CEO Spencer Gordon-Sand. The acquisition immediately reignited community interest: trading volume surged more than 1,100% in the 90 days following the deal, and floor prices recovered from sub-$1,000 valuations to approximately 3.45 ETH.

Orange Cap Games has positioned Moonbirds as a potential long-running consumer brand, with Gordon-Sand citing Pop Mart — the Chinese collectibles company — as a reference point for the kind of physical and digital product expansion envisioned. Under the new ownership the project underwent rebranding toward a more youthful and meme-driven identity.

The BIRB Token and Solana Integration

At the Birbhalla event held during Token 2049 in Singapore in October 2025, Orange Cap Games announced BIRB, an ecosystem token set to launch on Solana. The Solana blockchain was chosen for its lower transaction costs and growing consumer application ecosystem, even as the original Moonbirds NFTs remain on Ethereum.

BIRB is designed as a brand participation and community coordination asset rather than a traditional on-chain governance token. The team has described its anticipated uses as supporting community engagement, campaigns, and future products spanning both digital and physical collectibles. BIRB is not positioned as a protocol infrastructure token, and public communications de-emphasize classic voting-based governance mechanics.

The token's maximum supply is set at 100 million BIRB. The Token Generation Event (TGE) was announced for January 28, 2026, with a Moonbirds x Solana "Birbathon" live event scheduled to accompany the launch. Holders of Moonbirds NFTs and related PROOF Collective collections — including Mythics and Oddities — were identified as participants in pre-launch activity pathways, with the ability to claim one soulbound participation token per NFT held. No guaranteed BIRB allocations for NFT holders were confirmed at the time of the announcement.

Coinbase announced plans to list BIRB ahead of the TGE, extending the token's potential distribution reach within the broader crypto market.

Related Collections

Moonbirds sits within a broader PROOF Collective ecosystem that includes Mythics and Oddities, two companion NFT collections also on Ethereum. These collections share community overlap with Moonbirds and were incorporated into the pre-launch participation structure for BIRB.

Ecosystem Fit on Solana

The BIRB launch represents Moonbirds' formal entry into the Solana ecosystem. Rather than migrating the underlying NFTs, the project is introducing its native token on Solana to access the chain's consumer-friendly infrastructure and active trading community. This approach mirrors moves by other established NFT communities — including Pudgy Penguins and Doodles — that have launched tokens on separate chains while retaining original NFT collections on Ethereum. Moonbirds' revival under Orange Cap Games, combined with the BIRB token on Solana, signals an effort to reposition a once-dominant NFT brand as a multi-chain consumer property.
