IslandDAO

IslandDAO is a Solana-native network state that brings the ecosystem's most committed builders together for month-long coworking retreats, hackathons, and demo days in destinations around the world. What started as a feedback-focused service DAO has evolved into one of Solana's most active in-real-life (IRL) communities, with more than 1,000 builders from over 30 countries having passed through its events across three years of operation.

From Dean's List to IslandDAO

IslandDAO traces its roots to Dean's List, a subDAO that emerged from [[PROJECT:386]] (Grape Protocol) in 2022. Grape Protocol, co-founded by Dean Pappas, built community infrastructure on Solana, and Dean's List grew out of it as a specialized unit focused on delivering in-depth user feedback to Solana protocols. Members acted as a tokenized, mobile freelance workforce — testing applications, documenting UX friction points, and reporting back to partner teams.

Over time the community's gravity shifted. The feedback service model gave way to a broader identity: a tight-knit global network of Solana power users who valued face-to-face collaboration as much as on-chain work. In August 2024 the rebrand to IslandDAO made that shift official, retiring the $DEAN token for $ISLAND and anchoring the project's identity around its signature IRL retreats.

Core Mechanism: The Month-Long Retreat Model

The central product IslandDAO offers is what it calls an island: a month-long event held in an inspiring destination where builders live, work, and ship together. Each event is structured around three interlocking formats: dedicated coworking time during the day, structured workshops and mentorship sessions, and hackathons that culminate in public demo days. Evenings feature social programming designed to accelerate the relationship-building that online communities rarely achieve.

The model explicitly targets builders at different lifecycle stages. Early-stage founders use the retreats to find co-founders and refine ideas. Mid-stage teams pursue hackathon prizes and feedback from real users in the room. More established projects come to court investors or land integrations with other Solana protocols. IslandDAO frames itself not as an accelerator with a fixed curriculum but as a dense network environment where the right serendipitous conversation is the product.

By September 2026 IslandDAO had hosted five events: v1 in Crete (June 2024), v2 in Ko Samui, Thailand (October 2024), v3 in Mykonos (September 2025), v4 back in Ko Samui (June 2026), and v5 in Florianopolis, Brazil (October 19 to November 11, 2026). The Brazil edition marks IslandDAO's first foray into Latin America and arrives with [[PROJECT:219]] Jupiter Exchange as a named sponsor, offering attendees a discount on the Jupiter API plan for three months.

Governance and the $ISLAND Token

The $ISLAND token functions as IslandDAO's on-chain governance token, used to vote on proposals through [[PROJECT:966]] (Realms), Solana's native governance infrastructure. Token holders can weigh in on how the treasury is spent, which locations host future events, which partnerships IslandDAO pursues, and other decisions that shape the DAO's direction. Crucially, participation in governance does not require event attendance: remote members vote from their wallets with the same standing as in-person participants.

IslandDAO describes its decision-making as a hybrid between token-weighted voting and Sowellian Governance, a model that weights contributions and reputation alongside raw token holdings. This approach is meant to give active community members more influence than passive holders who have not engaged with the community's work.

The $ISLAND token was previously known as $DEAN during the Dean's List era, and data aggregators including CoinGecko and LBank still cross-reference the two names. IslandDAO does not publish tokenomics figures or a circulating supply breakdown on its public-facing pages.

NFTs: The PERKS Collection

Beyond the governance token, IslandDAO has launched the PERKS NFT collection: twelve animal-themed digital collectibles available on Magic Eden. The animals follow the Chinese zodiac — Dragon, Tiger, Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Inu (Dog), Pig, and Mouse — each unlocking a specific perk tied to real-world events, including exclusive merchandise drops and holders-only gatherings at retreats.

PERKS NFTs are not required to attend IslandDAO events. The project keeps the door open for any Solana builder through an application process announced on Twitter and Discord in the months leading up to each event. Participation fees cover accommodation and workspace costs; the NFTs layer on top-tier benefits for dedicated community members who want deeper access and a stake in the community's identity.

Ecosystem Partners and Solana Integration

IslandDAO sits at an intersection of some of Solana's most prominent organizations. The Solana Foundation appears as a collaborator, alongside Metaplex (the NFT standard and tooling layer), Solflare (the Solana wallet), and Superteam chapters across Thailand, Brazil, Malaysia, Singapore, Canada, the UK, and Germany. The Superteam connection is particularly meaningful: Superteam chapters operate as regional networks of Solana contributors, and their alignment with IslandDAO gives the retreat events immediate local context in each destination.

[[PROJECT:219]] Jupiter Exchange's sponsorship of v5 Brazil demonstrates that IslandDAO events attract protocol-level attention. Jupiter's offer of a discounted API plan to attendees shows the retreat model has become a meaningful channel for developer acquisition within Solana's DeFi layer.

IslandDAO also tracks its success through Colosseum, Solana's flagship hackathon program. The project claims 14 Colosseum hackathon winners among its past participants, positioning the retreats as a meaningful pipeline for competitive Solana development.

Team and Community Structure

IslandDAO does not prominently name a core team on its public website, consistent with its DAO ethos of distributed ownership. The project originated from the leadership of Dean Pappas through the [[PROJECT:386]] Grape Protocol context, and the community has since grown to include regional chapter leaders who can organize local events between the main retreats. The GitHub organization at github.com/IslandDAO reflects an open development posture.

The DAO has cultivated a two-speed membership model: those who can travel to month-long retreats and those who participate remotely through Discord, community calls, and on-chain votes. Both groups hold $ISLAND and participate in governance, keeping the community's decision-making broader than any single cohort of event attendees.

Network State Ambitions

IslandDAO explicitly brands itself as a network state: a term used to describe online communities that develop shared norms, physical presence, and eventual political or economic coordination. Whether IslandDAO will grow into that full vision remains to be seen, but the project's trajectory from Solana feedback forum to multi-continent builder retreat network in three years demonstrates real organizational momentum within one of crypto's most active L1 ecosystems.
