Ded Monkes

Ded Monkes is a community-owned NFT collection on Solana, built by a group of collectors who survived a rug pull and chose to rebuild rather than walk away. Launched in July 2022 under the motto "What is DED may never die," the project positioned itself as both an NFT collection and a DAO committed to social-based rewards and community-first DeFi access on Solana. As of 2024–2025, the project's official web presence has substantially collapsed and trading activity has fallen to near-zero, indicating the project is no longer actively maintained.

Origin Story: Rising from a Rug Pull

Ded Monkes did not begin as a fresh mint. It emerged from the wreckage of an earlier Solana NFT project whose founders abandoned it — taking the community's capital with them. Rather than accept the loss, a core group of holders regrouped, rebranded as Ded Monkes, and restarted under a community-governed model. The tagline "What is DED may never die" was a direct reference to this origin: the project was built on the idea that a community with genuine conviction could outlast even a catastrophic betrayal.

This backstory gave Ded Monkes an unusual identity in the Solana NFT space. Where many NFT projects launched with polished marketing and founder-controlled treasuries, Ded Monkes entered with a shared grievance and a decentralized structure as its founding logic. Community values — described by the project as respect, friendship, and mutual aid — were framed as the actual product, not merely marketing copy.

The Collection

The Ded Monkes NFT collection consists of two sub-collections on Solana: 666 "Monkes" and 111 "Ded Heads," for a combined supply of 777 NFTs. The Monkes form the core collection; the Ded Heads function as a companion tier. Both collections are generative PFP-style NFTs with rarity traits tracked by platforms such as HowRare.is and listed on marketplaces including Magic Eden, OKX, and OpenSea.

The project's Solana-native structure meant NFT ownership was tied to wallet-based access: holding a Ded Monkes NFT was described as entry into the "Ded Family," granting access to DeFi protocols, token airdrops, and community events. Membership was intended to be substantive — the project explicitly framed the NFT as a key to ongoing ecosystem benefits rather than a static collectible.

Social-Based Rewards and the $DED Token

Ded Monkes described its core innovation as building "the first social-based rewards NFT on Solana." The concept revolved around rewarding NFT holders based on community participation and social engagement rather than purely on trading or staking duration.

The $DED token was a central component of the planned ecosystem. Holders were promised access to DeFi protocols tied to $DED, along with periodic airdrops. The token was intended to circulate within the Ded Monkes community as a reward instrument and as a medium for the project's broader DeFi ambitions.

Season One — a phased rollout of the community staking framework and ten weeks of open community missions and events — was announced during the project's active period. The framework was designed to integrate all existing components of the $DED ecosystem into a single, community-built structure.

Community and DAO Structure

Ded Monkes operated as a DAO, with governance and direction nominally held by NFT holders. The project's Discord server and Twitter account (@DedMonkes) served as primary coordination points. Community channels were active during the project's peak in 2022–2023, with the Discord described as one of the more engaged communities in the Solana NFT space at the time.

The project's identity leaned heavily into the "most social community on Solana" positioning — an explicit bet that cohesion and mutual trust, not just financial mechanisms, could sustain an NFT project through market downturns. For a period this resonated: the project built a recognizable brand, maintained active social channels, and attracted collector interest across secondary marketplaces.

Current Status: Inactive

As of August 2026, Ded Monkes shows all indicators of an inactive project:

• The official project page at hub.xyz/ded-monkes no longer exists. The hub.xyz domain is now operated by an entirely unrelated company — a physical AI and robotics data platform — with no trace of the Ded Monkes project on the site.
• The project's alternative website, dedmonkes.xyz, resolves but displays only the project name and tagline with no functional content or active links.
• A second domain, dedmonkes.com, returns a connection error (ECONNREFUSED), indicating the server is offline.
• The @DedMonkes Twitter/X account shows no recent posting activity.
• On-chain market data shows near-zero trading volume across major marketplaces. Forbes Digital Assets tracking shows a floor price of 0.00 SOL and zero active holders.
• A separate domain referenced in search results, iamded.xyz, returns a DNS failure, indicating the domain has expired.

Some NFTs from the collection remain distributed across holder wallets, and the collection is still indexed on secondary marketplaces. However, there is no evidence of active development, community coordination, or token activity.

Ded Monkes represents a relatively common outcome in the 2022–2023 Solana NFT wave: a community that formed with genuine conviction and a compelling origin story but did not sustain the engagement or infrastructure required for long-term viability. The project's resilience narrative was real, but the ecosystem conditions that supported small community-driven NFT DAOs — active secondary markets, rising Solana prices, broad collector interest in PFP projects — did not persist at the scale needed to fund ongoing development and community maintenance.
