About

CoinGate

CoinGate is a B2B cryptocurrency payment gateway and consumer on/off-ramp founded in 2014 and incorporated in Vilnius, Lithuania as UAB Decentralized. The platform allows merchants to accept crypto payments from customers and receive settlements in fiat currency or select digital assets, removing the need for merchants to manage crypto custody or volatility exposure directly. The company was co-founded by Dmitrijus Borisenka, Jonas Gilys, and Irmantas Baciulis, with Vilius Semenas serving as CEO as of 2025.

What CoinGate Does

Merchants integrate CoinGate through a hosted checkout flow, a REST API, or one of more than twenty e-commerce plugins. Accepted currencies cover 70+ cryptocurrencies; supported blockchains include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Polygon, Lightning Network, BNB Smart Chain, Arbitrum, Tron, Base, Optimism, and others. Solana support launched in May 2024, with SOL enabled automatically for all existing merchants at launch; USDC on Solana rolled out at the same time.

Merchants receive settlement in EUR by default or can retain holdings in BTC or USDC. CoinGate locks the exchange rate at the time the customer initiates payment, so the merchant receives a defined fiat equivalent regardless of price movement during transaction confirmation. Transaction fees start at a flat 1%, with no setup costs or subscription requirements.

The developer API (v2) supports the full payment lifecycle: creating and managing orders, issuing and tracking refunds, executing payouts, handling crypto-to-fiat and crypto-to-crypto conversions, managing recurring billing and subscriptions, and configuring dedicated payment channels. Payment Channels, launched in June 2025, assign a permanent on-chain address per client rather than generating a new invoice address for each transaction, enabling continuous deposit flows without per-transaction invoicing.

Scale and Usage

CoinGate processed 7 million payments cumulatively since founding, including 1.42 million in 2025 alone -- one payment roughly every 22 seconds over the course of that year. The platform reaches merchants in over 180 countries and operates a merchant directory of more than 100,000 stores.

The dominant merchant categories by transaction volume in 2025 are web hosting at 35.3%, consumer goods at 11.0%, VPN services at 7.4%, proxy providers at 6.9%, and IT services at 6.1%. The proxy and VPN segments are notable: a CoinGate data study found that crypto accounts for 30-75% of all payment volume in the proxy industry, compared to much lower shares in mainstream e-commerce.

By currency, Bitcoin held the top position with 22.1% of 2025 payment volume, followed by Tether (USDT) at 19.8%, Litecoin at 14.4%, and USDC at 11.5%. Stablecoin share rose from 16.7% of settlements in 2024 to 25.2% in 2025, with USDC order volume growing more than twelve-fold year over year. Settlement behavior among merchants shows 52.9% converting to EUR, 25.9% retaining BTC, 12.9% holding USDC, and 4.2% converting to USD. Of payouts executed, 85% were done via API, indicating that most high-volume merchants use CoinGate as an integrated treasury tool rather than a manual checkout product.

CoinGate integrated the Lightning Network in September 2018, among the first payment processors globally to do so. In 2025, Lightning accounted for 11.7% of all Bitcoin orders on the platform.

E-Commerce Plugins and Integrations

No-code plugins are available for WooCommerce, PrestaShop, OpenCart, WHMCS, Magento 2, Wix, Shopify, and Shopware. Point-of-sale, payment links, and QR code options serve physical retail and direct billing use cases. The platform also supports WalletConnect at checkout, added in May 2025, allowing users to pay directly from a connected non-custodial wallet.

Case study clients include NordVPN, which recorded 13% annual growth in crypto transactions through CoinGate across 176 countries, and Thunderproxy, where crypto accounts for 75% of transaction volume. Coinzilla, an ad network managing over 1 billion monthly impressions, uses the platform for cross-border payouts to 180+ countries.

Gift Card Marketplace

Separately from merchant payments, CoinGate operates a gift card marketplace covering more than 6,000 brands across more than 90 countries. Cards from Amazon, Apple, Walmart, Netflix, and similar retailers are purchasable with 90+ cryptocurrencies as well as Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, and SEPA. Cards are delivered by email and require no KYC for the purchase.

Licensing and Compliance

In December 2025, CoinGate received a Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) Crypto-Asset Service Provider license from the Bank of Lithuania (authorization code LB002323) and a Payment Institution license from the same authority (code LB002324). CoinGate was the first homegrown Lithuanian company to obtain a full MiCA authorization. The MiCA license is passportable across all 27 EU and EEA member states without additional national filings, covering custody and administration of crypto-assets, exchange between crypto and fiat, crypto-to-crypto exchange, and transfer of crypto-assets on behalf of clients.

Additional compliance certifications include PCI DSS Level 1, ISO 27001, and GDPR. On-chain transaction monitoring is performed through a partnership with Chainalysis for AML compliance. Approximately 90% of customer funds are held in cold storage, with multi-signature authorization required for large transactions. KYC verification for new accounts typically completes within one to two business days.

CoinGate services are not available to US-based users or merchants.

Consumer Services

Individual users can buy and sell cryptocurrency directly through CoinGate using SEPA bank transfers, credit cards, and debit cards. Buy fees using SEPA are 3%; credit and debit card purchases carry an 8% fee. SEPA withdrawals are free on a minimum of EUR 50.

The platform also runs a merchant referral program paying 1% of referred users transaction volume, with bonus tiers of EUR 50 at first referred order, EUR 200 at EUR 100,000 in referred merchant turnover, and EUR 1,000 at EUR 1 million in referred turnover. New referred merchants receive a 30-day fee-free period.
