Basic Attention Token (BAT): Monetizing Attention ... The conversation briefly touches on the Basic Attention Token (BAT), which is associated with the Brave browser.
Brave
Brave is an open-source, privacy-first web browser built on Chromium and developed by Brave Software, Inc., co-founded by Brendan Eich (creator of JavaScript and co-founder of Mozilla) in 2015. The browser ships with aggressive ad and tracker blocking by default through its Shields system, claims page-load speeds three to six times faster than conventional browsers, and comes with a built-in VPN, Brave Search, and a native multi-chain crypto wallet — all without requiring third-party extensions.
Brave Wallet and Solana Support
Brave Wallet is a self-custody crypto wallet embedded directly in the browser, eliminating the need for browser extensions. It supports Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains, Solana, Bitcoin, Filecoin, Zcash, and Cardano. The Solana integration includes native SPL token support, a built-in DEX aggregator for on-chain swaps, NFT management, and DApp connectivity across desktop, Android, and iOS.
Brave's relationship with Solana began formally in November 2021, when Brave and Solana Labs announced a strategic partnership at the Breakpoint conference in Lisbon. The agreement made Solana the default blockchain for DApp support across Brave's browser, citing Solana's low transaction costs — at the time as little as $0.001 to $0.002 per transaction — as a practical fit for distributing micropayments to millions of users. That integration shipped with Brave's 1.39 release, delivering Solana wallet functionality, SPL token sends, NFT support, and a Solana DEX aggregator to Brave's then-42 million monthly active users.
Brave later extended Solana DApp support to iOS and Android, enabling users to interact with Solana-based applications from mobile devices. In March 2026, Brave Wallet added NEAR Intents, enabling seamless cross-chain swaps across Bitcoin, Solana, Zcash, Cardano, and EVM chains without manual bridging or gas management.
Brave Rewards and BAT on Solana
Brave Rewards is an opt-in program where users choose to view privacy-preserving first-party ads and earn Basic Attention Token (BAT) in return. Creators who verify their accounts can receive contributions directly from users. The program sits at the core of Brave's business model, letting the company generate ad revenue while returning a share to the people who actually view the ads.
Solana became the settlement layer for Brave Rewards' on-chain payout system. In an initial limited rollout and then a full public launch in August 2025 (Brave version 1.81.x), users gained the ability to connect a self-custody Solana wallet to Brave Rewards and receive BAT payouts as Wormhole-bridged SPL-BAT directly on-chain. Previously, payouts required third-party custodians. The Solana-based system hands users full control over their earned BAT, which can then be used to swap tokens via Brave Wallet's DEX aggregator, purchase SOL domains from Bonfida, provide liquidity on Orca, or mint NFTs on Magic Eden.
Solana was chosen specifically for Rewards payouts because its high throughput and low fees make it economically feasible to distribute BAT to hundreds of thousands of users simultaneously — a practical constraint that ruled out higher-fee networks for mass reward distribution.
BAT Roadmap 4.0 and the Transactional Attention Economy
In July 2026, Brave published BAT Roadmap 4.0, outlining a significant evolution of the token and its surrounding ecosystem. The roadmap frames BAT's next phase around the concept of a "transactional attention economy" — moving beyond ad-funded rewards toward a broader payments and creator compensation infrastructure.
Key components of the roadmap include:
- Agentic payments: Native browser support for autonomous micropayments triggered by AI agents, leveraging the internet-native x402 payment protocol and a Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) for machine-to-machine transactions.
- BravePay stablecoin protocol: A protocol layer enabling users, creators, and merchants to transact, earn, and settle privately on-chain. BravePay is designed for self-custody and aims to avoid tracking by major payment networks.
- Unified Brave Wallet: A consolidated wallet interface that brings together traditional saved payment methods, self-custody crypto accounts, and Brave Rewards balances into a single experience.
- Brave Rewards Card: A stablecoin-powered virtual and physical payment card with purchase rewards, bridging on-chain balances to everyday commerce.
- Creator Contribution Protocol: A system for compensating verified creators when their content is used in AI-generated experiences, addressing a growing tension between AI companies and content producers.
Scale and Ecosystem Position
Brave's combination of a privacy-first browsing experience with a natively embedded Solana-capable wallet positions it as one of the few major browsers with genuine Web3 infrastructure built in rather than bolted on. With Solana as both the DApp default and the settlement layer for user rewards, Brave represents a high-visibility consumer touchpoint for the Solana ecosystem — one that distributes BAT to users at scale and routes those users into Solana-native DeFi, NFT, and domain services. The trajectory set by Roadmap 4.0 points toward deeper integration of stablecoin payments and AI-mediated micropayments, with Solana's infrastructure likely to remain central to Brave's on-chain settlement strategy.
